New Mummy coaster to replace Kongfrontation at Universal Florida

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Sources tell The Orlando Sentinel that Universal Studios is planning an indoor roller coaster to replace Kongfrontation, one of the parks original rides, which was closed in September. The new ride will apparently be themed to "The Mummy" movie.

The Mummy AND *Jiminy Neutron*, that's two. Sort of odd we're getting the Universal expansion "in bits and pieces". Perhaps they're borrowing a page from the PKI book, hmmm?

Oh, please. In some ways I can see your point, but Universal has been theming rides and attractions to movies long before Kings Island sold out to Paramount. That's like saying the Macintosh OS is borrowing a page from Windows.

Maybe Universal started it, PKI took it a slightly different direction, and then Universal followed suit? Could be. But I guess I'll agree to disagree.

Is this the long awaited coaster where you have to wear VR glasses?

hey dani, I think are-gee-dub was referring to the piecemeal leakage of information on new attractions, like PKI did with TR:TR, scooby, and giant frisbee. Dont think anyone would argue that Universal has been doing moive theming before PKI..

on another note, I surely hope this is NOT another attraction that forces you to wear extra glasses. None of them seem exactly compatible with my perscription lenses...

AH! I get it. My fault. And as far as the glasses go, I'm not so sure. Sounds like a liability. Not to mention, it might lower hourly capacity.

Jeremy, thanks for clearing that up...I am a marketing-type guy, and think the "piece-meal" release is an interesting STRATEGY. How it'll *play out/pay off*, they'll certainly never let US know, lol. I missed that *old* moniker, just so noone confuses me with the "Real GW"....;). Shouldn't be a problem....

IIRC, Universal was trying to do away with the 3-d glasses, not sure if that technology is *ready* for this attraction. I do agree that 3-d's aren't the greatest for those of us who ALREADY have "extra eyes"...(who do I feel like Spider-Man when I say it that way)...:)

'gator...that's fine as long as only your "spidey-sense" gets tingly...

---Superman the ride...coming to a SF park near you soon...

Don't expect this ride to open until 2004. I just hope it is a little more intense than Rock n' Rollercoaster with theming as elaborate. Honestly, I hope the new rides(A Shrek ride is coming in 2003 also) give the park a boost in attendance so they can move to a more thrill-ride type of a park(like Sea World is doing). Universal is pretty lame right now, IMO.
I heard early rumors that it was going to have slow, dark ride type sections to enhance the theme and faster coaster element sections as well. Possibly using linear induction/launch. Surely the building isn't high enougy for a decent sized lift hill, unless they go out the top of the roof and then come back in. *** This post was edited by wahoo skipper on 12/6/2002. ***

rollergator: don't forget about the Shreck 4-D movie that is going to replace Hitchcock. That was announced along w/ the Jimmy Neutron ride.

I'm heading to USF this weekend, so I'll let you know.

Expect an awesome coaster. Universal's "Mummy" attraction at USH is very well themed. It was quite possibly one of the greatest spook houses I've ever been in. I can't even imagine what a coaster would be like with that kind of amazing theming.

Just curious, the last time I in FL I was 9. Is Kongfrontation the one where like you're in like red cars of some sort and there is like some newscast thing?

I have blurred visions of USH and WDW when I was there in 1996. Some explain Kong please?*** This post was edited by MFRULES 4/13/2003 4:23:40 PM ***

It has a big APE!

If you missed King Kong on the ride, then you probally didn't ride it. A 40 foot tall money is hard to miss.

So is a 40-foot monkey!

Moosh - who hates it when he make dumb errors like that, too ;)

Doesn't Woody Woodpecker's Nuthouse coaster count? The article says that Mummy would be the first coaster at universal. I know it's not much, but it still counts in my book!
Maybe they don't know it exists!

See THE ULTIMATE in Orlando TR'S! Right now in the TR fourm!

Dont forget ET is an inverted Coaster of sorts. So that makes two!

Still I cant wait!

I think Universal should continue with the B&M outdoor coasters. They've hade an unmeasureable about of success with The hulk and Dueling Dragons. After seeing the Rockin' Roller Coaster, I would build a B&M flyer or Stand-up.

I remember the monkey. I know I rode it. I was asking more or less about the ride. And also we have this picture of my family inside King Kong's hand. Was that part of the ride?
