NAPHA names Cedar Point number one again with three top-five coasters

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

According to a press release issued by Cedar Fair, NAPHA has named Cedar Point the "best park in the world" according to their 2000 survey. They also named Magnum #1 for the tenth year in a row, with Millennium Force at #2 and Raptor at #4.

These things are incredibly out of date and weighted so much, they shouldn't even count.

AWWWWWWW YEAH! Maggie all the way baby! I am so proud of her.....

I do agree with Koaster King...there are plenty of other parks that are a better experience overall (especially in the price category!!). But for steel coasters, it's hard to ignore the great ones at CP. Does anyone know the totals for WOOD coasters??? Just curious how my Legend has held up, seeing that it has only gotten better since it opened!

An unnerving stillness in the woods of southern Indiana beckons for you on May 11th.....
It seems that some FOOLS that have never experienced the Force, Maggie, or the Point are a little jealous or something. Getting mad at a little poll........ don't you feel stupid?

Koaster King, I wonder what park you went to, because you're not describing Cedar Point. Anyway, go Cedar Point!

"If horrible shows..."

Hmmm... he must not have seen Hot Country Hoochies, I mean Nights. ;) When you've got one of the best fiddle players in the country (with Nashville drooling all over him) and some very attractive and talented singers, you've got a winning show. Mind you, I'd rather stick a hot poker in my eye than listen to country... the show was really that good. The Big 80's wasn't bad either.

People are entitled to their opinions I guess, even if they are wrong. :)

I think Napha is biased
I agree with those who think these surveys are a bit weighted. I think Cedar Point is a great amusement park, in fact, when I visited in June of 1999, I really enjoyed my visit. But, let's face it, there are amusement parks around the world Cedar Point beat, in more ways than one.

Magnum XL-200 is always near the top of these lists (or, in this case, #1.) Sure, it deserved it at the time, but there are many roller coasters currently operating that are better than Magnum. It seems like Magnum is always so hign on these lists for sentimental reasons.

Raptor's another one -- it's a great inverted roller coaster, but there are also better inverteds to be found around the world. Specifically, I feel Islands of Adventure's Dueling Dragons are better than it.

Now, don't take this as my bashing Cedar Point or those who love the park, because I know a lot of people will take it that way. I'm not.. I like the park and its rides myself. But, when a park sweeps these surveys like this for 10 years straight.. something's wrong.

Corey - I'm proud to be working Magnum this summer too! It'll be my first season at CP and I can't wait to get there! I'm processing in on May 30, so I won't be there for the beginning of the season. :( Congratulations once again to CP. Not only do they have great rides, but they have great operations and people that make that place great and I'm proud to have the opportunity to be a part of that this summer! :)

Simply put. Cedar Point is the New York Yankees of the Amusement Park world. You either love them for being good, or you hate them for their consistent recognition for being good.
Robby, I dont think people hate Cedar Point for the consustant recognition they get for being good. I think that people are just saying that there are better rides out there.
Is there anywhere to get the entire list? Also, from what I understand, NAPHA ranks steel and wooden coasters separately. I'm quite interested to see if Kennywood's Thunderbolt held its ground after two years of CCI's attacks. ;)

BriLam said it all. I like CP a lot, but Maggie #1 for 11 years straight??? All I ever hear about Magnum is "It's too rough." How can a ride that constantly gets slammed for being too rough also be #1 in the world? (note, I HAVE ridden CP's coasters and enjoyed them, I do not find Maggie too rough, but MANY people do)

To quote Al Gore... "I want a recount."

"X" marks the spot in 2001!
Whoa!! I love CP and it is a really great park. I just don't think it is "overall" near the best other parks around the nation or around the World are. They shouldn't be recognized for a lot of rides and some of them being good and some being bad. At the previous parks I mentioned, "all" of the rides are supposed the be there and they don't just buy the biggest thing they can and put it in their park. They all have great show, theming, atmosphere, etc. And I don't count the "lake" around CP as any points for CP themselves having atmosphere because no work went into having that being made like the theming at Busch Gardens, HW, IOA, heck, even Paramount Parks.

I think MF is fine in it's position as a top 5 or even #1 coaster. I couldn't agree more. But Magnum and Raptor....come on. Anybody there ever ridden Raging Bull, SROS, Medusa, The Hulk, Apollo's Chariet, Goliath...I could go on. Or have they ridden Montu, Alpengeist, Dueling Dragons, or Nemisis.

And Jeff, all of Dollywood's shows were better than that show. And even they could be added to the "best" parks list everything a good park should be plus a free waterpark. Something CP needs to learn to do as the other "Big 2" in Ohio are doing.

Just my opinion again. Thanks for listening. ;)
Once again everyone needs to remember that we are talking about opinions here. This poll isn't based on some mathematical formula, it is based on the voting on a specific group of individuals. Whose opinions may reflect the opinions of the whole or they may not. Regardless, you can each have your own favorite park and your own favorite ride - it really doesn't matter what NAPHA thinks. It is just another OPINION poll.

-------------
All time Top 5: (1) Milleniun Force (2) Alpengeist (3) Hulk (4) Ice Dragon (5) Raptor
Good point J. It's ONE poll by ONE group. This isn't the definitive decision, nor does it reflect a total view of how most of us feel. Just have fun with it, and forget about it. I know I will as I ride "MY" favorite steel coaster tommorrow.
I think that "Maggie" and MF will continue to be on NAPHA top ten list for years to come. But if you notice other top ten lists those coasters are no where near the top.
Magnum is a good coaster, but incredibly overrate and IMO shouldn't be Number 1 on the list... So many people say it's simple 'incredible' that others will tend to agree, even though they may not think that highly of it, turning into a bit of "peer pressure." Maybe I'm rambling again, but it's the same thing with Raptor, and I have a feeling it's going to be the same way with Millennium Force (even though I love MF and it is currently my #1).

Any true coaster fan has the ability to separate emotion from reality. Being from SFMM territory, I am truly fortunate to be able to enjoy some of the world's greatest coasters frequently. I am a harsh critic and only one of SFMM's coasters rank among my top five and that's the world's tallest and fastest standup Riddler's Revenge (TRY 160 FT STANDING UP). My favorite steel is hands down Millennium Force and that's without ever riding in the front car(rode the back car twice)!!! Can't wait for that. But, Cedar Point fans don't seem to be able to shake the "Maggie" nostalgia. LET'S FACE IT CEDAR POINT FANS!! THE WORLD HAS MOVED ON TO MAKE INCREDIBLE COASTERS. ACCEPT IT!!
But I don't have to say much else. ONCE X HITS THE SCENE THIS SPRING MAGGIE WILL BE ACCEPTED AS THE DINOSAUR SHE REALLY IS.
