NAPHA names Boulder Dash top coaster

Posted | Contributed by LakeAC

Kennywood's Thunderbolt has apparently fallen slightly out of favor with NAPHA members, as the organization has named Boulder Dash and Lake Compounce the new number one wood coaster in the world.

While I had the pleasure to ride Boulderdash 15 times the day I was there last year, I quickly moved it to the top 5 on my personal list. It is a fantastic ride! Consistent speed throughout, lots of good air, not a bad seat on it. While I believe that it would be hard to beat THE BEAST,THUNDERBOLT, or a (maybe) a couple of others in its first year, it definitely has the potential to be the best. The nightime ride is to be seen (or not seen!) to be believed. Rivaled only by THE BEAST as far as darkness (maybe THE RAVEN too, but I have not ridden it yet) you get a faceful of pitch black as you cruise through the mountainside. The ride-ops nicknamed it "BUGDASH" in reference to those hot summer nights spent riding in the front seat. It's a world class coaster that's moving up the list fast.
New England had crappy coasters until 2000. All of a sudden we have an awesome wooden and an awesome steel coaster.
I would bet my money that Superman at SFNE may come in as the #1 steel coaster.

Save your money. The steel coaster list was announced awhile ago. Magnum XL-200 came in at number 1 again. MF at 2.

True, but NAPHA puts Kennywood as the #1 park, not CP.

As if the NAPHA ratings really matter.

"X" marks the spot in 2001!
As if any ratings really matter.
yeah Napha seems a little biased- a lot of those rankings are a little biased. What you really should trust is your own opinion.
I don't know about the wood coasters but the steel is very biased. There are so many hypers and even non-hyper coasters much better than Magnum. Magnum isn't even CF's best hyper. And IMHO, a certain NE hyper was much better than MF. It does look like The Beast may be in it's last few years on the list. I'm glad to see my #3 favorite wood(and their's too on the list).

Judge coasters on your own! Don't take polls so seriously. None of my favorite coasters EVER top any list. Most polls don't take into account the little quirks that make a coaster special, they always seem to go for the *safe* choice.
This is off topic a bit, but is Magnum THAT good? I've never been on the thing and won't until June 14th, but is it really THAT good? I mean, to beat out MF and the S:ROS coasters as well as the plethora of other, equally good steel coasters must mean it's a GREAT coaster. So can someone tell me what makes it such a great coaster that it continually beats out other steel monsters? As far as Boulder Dash is concerned though, what I've seen of the thing would suggest that it's deserving of this honor. The ride looks absolutely amazing. Peace. :)

Medusa at Marine World: the best coaster in the west!
I didn't find the Magnum all that great. To me it was very rough and quite painful. Once the ride was over all I could think about was "And that's supposed to be the best?" I thought MF totally blew Magnum away. However that's just my opinion. I'm sure there's people who will tell you different. Just my thoughts. And about Boulder Dash, way to go! I like to see some variation to the list.
when is the show on the discovery channel showing.
Magnum and Millenium are the best coasters i have ever been on. Magnum isn't rough at all, and if it is, who cares that makes it all the more fun in my opinion. Cedar Point will always be number #1, face the facts non ohioans

Is The Villan at SFWoA would be up there in the list. I really liked this ride.

bias: partiality or preference
biased: to have partiality or preference

Read that twice... opinions by definition are biased. Why is this word so misused by enthusiasts? Of course opinions are biased, if they weren't they wouldn't be opinions, they'd be facts.

Now if you say that something is biased toward something, that makes sense, but to just say a poll is biased doesn't make sense.

Where can i find these complete lists, they are no where to be found!
Hey, I'm glad to see Boulder Dash topping the list of great woodies, but I have to say I'm a little surprised. It holds the top spot on my list, but I haven't ridden other masterpieces such as Ghostrider and Shivering Timbers which I would imagine to be better coasters.

Boulder Dash had it all. It is rivaled (in layout) by The Beast and maybe the Raven, but I think it beats both of them. Speed, airtime, and a short wait to board. It's #1 on my list!
Actually, it's perfectly reasonable to say a poll's biased. Maybe not for the same reasons as people, but they can still favor certain things or types of things for any number of reasons. In this case, both the poll's methodology and the sample it's measuring lead to a pretty distinct bias. In particular, NAPHA's a group with pretty specific tastes, and that's something to consider when looking at their polls.

Nevertheless, it's awfully neat to see Boulder Dash at the top of a poll and getting some much deserved attention. Way to go Lake Compounce!

mike (guess I did learn something in that class)

Is Lake Compounce pay-per-ride, or is it one single admission...
