Muppets move to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Monsters Inc. take over their area at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Posted | Contributed by BrettV

From the official Disney Parks Blog:

That’s right, humans will be able to enter the world of Monsters, Inc. when it is added to the south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Building off the exciting announcements from last summer’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the new land will include the coaster we’ve all dreamed of – a suspended ride recreating the door vault scene – plus dining and shopping and a whole new theater show.

To make way for the monsters, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends will be moving right along to Sunset Boulevard! But there’s more to the story: The Muppets will be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival!

However, who makes that decision? The consumer who wants a different experience.

Look, I'll own that I'm likely in the minority on the Marvel restaurant...

Right, that's just you. I'm not saying that Disney gets it all right every time (the lack of a real promenade deck on the Titan class ships is pretty dumb), but you don't attract three generations in a family onboard unless you can reach all of them at least some of the time. Same is true for the theme parks. If the consumer doesn't want that experience, they shouldn't pay for it. It's obviously not a deal breaker to you, given your trip report about your cruise.

I think a lot of folks look for integrity and authenticity in commercial art, which is what I would consider theme park attraction design. But even in commercial art, which is to say art intended to sell, quality is subjective. I see fans wanting to see their own intent followed in the latest thing, which is fine, everyone wants what they want, but just because it doesn't align doesn't mean it's not quality to people spending money to consume it. As fond as I am of pointing out that right and wrong is generally a shared social contract, art is not that.

this is one of the things that Disney copied, which is a rarity in their universe.

Apparently you have not been to Greenfield Village… The first outdoor museum, which had a recreated Main St, Trains but not a loop until after DL, and a riverboat in a circle on the back left.

Also, nothing official has come out as far as a completely different thematic direction for the park. The fact that it retains the Hollywood Studios name, and has for so long, tells me that there's not really an eagerness to abandon it, let alone a decided-upon direction for what the new idea would be.

I regret to inform you that you will find no monarchs in either Magic or Animal Kingdoms. Nor is anything in EPCOT experimental or prototypical. Seriously, though, the name is the brand, and they already changed it once even if plenty of people still call it "MGM". I'd imagine anything that seems like an obvious park name is already trademarked, and "Movie Themed Rides R Us" doesn't really roll off the tongue.

Disney - Adventure World coming to France in 2026 has logged into the chat.

Ugh, that sounds even more generic! I'm not familiar with that park, but if it's anything like DCA, it has plenty that would not fall under anyone's definition of "adventure", so it's clunky and doesn't accurately describe the park :)

Seriously, calling your park "[X] Adventure" is like naming a ride "Roller Coaster 1" at this point.

Michigan's Adventure
California Adventure
Six Flags World of Adventure
Adventureland [multiple!]
Chessington's World of Adventure
Islands of Adventure
et al, ad nauseam

"Adventure Park 1 is too generic for me."

The pattern is definitely full.

but if it's anything like DCA

It was way worse, it was originally a deep discount DHS, lacking the whole 30s Hollywood place making. Basically they cloned the Backlot and Animation Courtyard, but with no Muppets or Indy. But it actually got its Toy Story rides way before DHS, and it’s Rockn Roller Coaster got an Iron Man overlay when it’s backlot area got turned into Avenger's Campus.
