Muppets move to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Monsters Inc. take over their area at Disney's Hollywood Studios

From the official Disney Parks Blog:

That’s right, humans will be able to enter the world of Monsters, Inc. when it is added to the south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Building off the exciting announcements from last summer’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the new land will include the coaster we’ve all dreamed of – a suspended ride recreating the door vault scene – plus dining and shopping and a whole new theater show.

To make way for the monsters, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends will be moving right along to Sunset Boulevard! But there’s more to the story: The Muppets will be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival!

I don’t know how to feel about this. I love Aerosmith and love RnRC way more than it probably deserves, but I also recognize that Aerosmith may not hold the same cache it once did. (I know way too many people who think Disney invented the band for the ride). Muppets is a great but similarly old IP, but I could probably get behind an Electric Mayhem themed ride.

I’m more upset with Muppetvision 3D leaving.

The loss of Muppet-Vision 3D stings.

Muppet Rock n Roller Coaster has potential to be quirky and fun. But I also feel like you're shutting out a lot of audience for a Muppet based attraction when it's a launched looping roller coaster in a Disney park.

Aerosmith is temporary; The Muppets are forever. This is a good compromise IMO.

In the meantime, there’s still enough time to catch a super-stretch limo to the Forum to enjoy Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith and catch Muppet*Vision 3D again before their final curtain calls.

They did for the CF parks, just not for the SF parks though.

I am surprised they didn’t announce anything in regards to Superman at SFMM though.

I am curious how the PR and GM integration looks moving forward, I am sure this off season more changes are coming.

The Muppet’s taking over Rocking Roller Coaster is actually pretty great, and the idea of animatronics surviving the move is nice.

But this also means the Animation Courtyard is still available for a rethink as well… and hopefully a theme that fits better where it’s at.

Interesting. I think Rock in Roller Coaster will certainly make for an interesting Muppets theme, and while I certainly will miss MuppetVision 3D, I can see that it is dated now. Here's an interesting question though. While RRC currently has a height limit of 48 inches, could a renovation possibly change that to be more accommodating to younger kids? I mean Demon at SFGAm has a height requirement of 42 inches.

I wonder how many kids might go on the ride now BECAUSE of the Muppets...only to get a rude awakening. I still remember my first ride on that coaster with my now-wife. She was not, and is not, a big coaster fan. I did not know anything about the ride and told her, "It's Disney. How bad can it be?"

Needless to say, she has not been back on it since, and she hasn't let me forget that I "conned" her into riding it. I'm more interested in seeing how the Monster's Inc ride turns out.

The idea of a kids vekoma flyer with a large-sh track journey with proper Disney budget for projection and etc, frankly has me more excited the Tron, especially if the layout remotely resembles the D23 model

I've seen Aerosmith three times (maybe more?), and I appreciate their place in the world of rock. They will always be one of the greatest bands of all time. Cool.

But tying them to a roller coaster was already a weird an dubious proposition. To the point of eightodtthree, Muppets don't actually age. Steven Tyler is 76. He's got 20 years at best, and I doubt he'll ever tour again. Muppetvision 3D I think was an original DHS attraction, so it survived pretty well. But let's be real, it took advantage of 3D stuff that was novel 30 years ago.

All the right moves here, as far as I'm concerned.

The reason that losing Muppet Vision hurts is that it was the final project Jim Henson ever did.

I didn't know that. That definitely may make it hard to see it go, but the doc that Disney+ released about him was an extraordinary tribute.

wait, what?

This is a poor matchup for theming.

A muppet attraction should be slow moving so people can catch all the details. The Muppets have a lot of characters and a lot of details can be done with these characters

Disney is so focused on just slapping IP on everything they aren’t even doing it well.

I still think expedition Everest is one of their best themed attractions with no IP

The name of the band is Electric Mayhem. That doesn’t sound like too much of a stretch (!) to me.

Kermit is only 7 years younger than Steven Tyler.

Whatever they do to it, it can't be any worse than what they did to the Paris ride. That is one of the worst Disney rides anywhere.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Yep. Rise of the Resistance and Guardians really suck. Bring back the original classics like Sounds Dangerous.

This actually sounds like a slam on the broken yeti.

This looks like the best possible merging of theme and ride experience/vehicle since Radiator Racers... And I'm sure it will be way better now than 15 years ago thanks to advances in projection tech.

probably a smart move overall. Most under 30s have no connection to Aerosmith.

Muppets is obviously a very old IP, but still hold alot of appeal to all ages.
