Markey's Response (you need Acrobat Reader)
I actually thought Malarkey was happy with the report, until I got to the bottom of the first page, then it became more useless political gobbledeegook. Now that the brain injury question has been answered, he's moved on to other accidents. And coasters have more deaths per traveled mile than airplanes? What kind of obscure statistic is that - oh wait, that's what happens when politicians are losing their battle...

Quote: Most parents are completely unaware that a bicycle is regulated at the federal level by the consumer Product Safety Commision
Ok now after reading that comment i am forced to go back to the other saying he stated:
Quote: Broken Limbs, cuts, sprains or death are not experiences that anyone expects when they go to the park for entertainment.
Last time i checked you get cuts sprains and possibly broken limbs on Bikes. Problem there?
Quote: ..... But a roller coaster carries their child at speeds they would never drive is completely exempt form of federal saferty regulation.
I don't know where you live Ed, but last time i was going down the road the speed limit sign said 60. Don't get me wrong, but, nearly most major coasters go near this speed. Another Problem?
Know what i have to say about this article, it's bull crap.

Markey like this Six Flags Funded study are useless, and tainted. Now when the 2nd report comes out in Feb. Now that'll be some useful information!!!
Both Markey and Six Flags are wasting their time... Plain and simple... Both blind to the facts!

I don't understand how he feels his regulation will help. States already regulate the rides (and being at a local level, most likely better than if it were done at the Federal level) and the media picks up on any accident that occurs. He is making the industry out to be a group of bloodthirsty, profit hugging corporate monsters. Why does he assume people in the industry don't care? 5.8 brain injuries per year is very very low.
We have neurosurgeons, engineers, and astronauts stating that the rides are safe and he still denies it. What more proof does this man want?

Is this country being run by gerbils or what. That, is an unfair comparison. Airplanes travels 8 times faster than the average coaster, therefore they cover much more ground. Why doesn't he campaign for something of just cause, like how we are planning for war when there is no need for one...ooooh...maybe I went too far.
I'm in the process of reading the new studies and have found relatively little to fault so far.
Remember that the Brain Injury Association Of America is closely allied with another industry, the lawyers. They have not contracted with anyone who has any independence to produce a report. They are producing it themselves. That kind of the same as if SF had done the report all by themselves. I hate to prejudge, but I am preskeptical.
Let's face it ,we all know that Markey absolutely hates the amusement industry & will try anything he can think of to bring it down or regulete it more than it currently is.
No matter how many reports are made saying that coasters are safe he's just not convinced of the facts that are right in front of him & just refuses to let it go,he can't stand it that he's wrong & someone else is right when it comes to this issue.

Aren't we supposed to learn something from the past?

You didn't go too far. I'm sure there are are others here that feel exactly the same way but then again, that's another whole forum debate. (Believe it or not, I was going to reply almost the exact same thing!)

Malarkey must have had a sad, sad childhood. Probably hit his head one too many times falling off of his bicycle or something. :)

I was a part of the study! Some T's weren't crossed, and some periods were missing!
The 2nd study will expose this!

Has anybody else ever bothered to read at least the earlier versions of Markey's bill? It isn't about amusement ride safety; it's about scaring up another million dollars or so for the CPSC...
(edit)...And we are supposed to appreciate the comments of a person who (a) doesn't understand that Acrobat files are fine for printable releases but annoying for Web content, and (b) whose staff can't even create an Acrobat file properly (why is there a Page 3?)...
