Markey and IAAPA rep spar on morning television

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

For the last two years, Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass) has been seeking federal oversight of amusement parks. His proposal, known as the National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act, would give the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) jurisdiction over the amusement park industry and establish a national G-force limit on rides.

Bill Powers represents the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions). He maintains that amusement parks are one of he safest recreational activities and that Markey is grossly overreacting.

Read the transcripts from CBS.

Hmmm...I wonder if the liberal slant to the media has anything to do with the size of the audience? Sorry...had to throw that it. Anyway, they guy is getting the publicity he wanted...bad or good...he's working it.

Generally, the MANUFACTURERS are the ones who impose the height and weight restrictions on the rides, not the parks themselves. I work at SFWoA and when X-Flight was installed we got coutless letters from Vekoma concerning height and weight restrictions, one finally saying that there was no practical weight restriction and that the height restrictions were all that were needed.

Somehow I doubt that the designers would be irresponsible with their designs. Could you imagine what would happen to a company if people kept getting hurt on their designs?
