Mantis converted from a stand up to a floorless

If that is what you meant then I apologize for the misinterpretation. :)

When will the "Stand-up-converted-to-floorless" thing ever die? Why would you even want to?

Oh, and just to add to the fray: Mantis is the roughest (for whatever reason) Stand-up I have been on. (RRv, King Cobra, Vortex[PGA], Mantis, Shockwave[SFMM]) Also the roughest B&M I have been on, still not anywhere near "virtually unrideable" like Flight of Fear, OUCH!

"X" marks the spot in 2001!
The first time I was tall enough to ride Mantis, I sat down on the seat, I was only about 1 inch above the seat so I didn't think it would make a difference. The ride was boring and I thought the best thing of the ride was the music videos, Then, later I rode it standing up--it was much more exciting and intense. So even if you could change it, I don't think it would be a good idea.
I agree with her, Mantis is one of the smoothest coasters I've ridden. I don't think Mantis would be that good as a floorless. There's no zero-g roll, and there isn't a cobra roll, so it would be rather boring IMO.

Legendary I think you missed the point. When we mean rough (or when I do atleast) I mean if you were to straighten out the track, then ride the coaster down it you would feel bumps. Mantis is not a bumpy (or rough) ride.

Number 1 And Only Cedar Point
Everyone screams about new coaster ideas. What happens when B&M decide or no parks want to build stand-ups anymore. People will still be complaining about that as well. Stand-ups are unique and offer an entirely different sensation compared to other coasters. I have always thought of Stand-ups as intentional INTENSE which would make the coaster a rougher ride experience. CP is known for their many different coaster variations. Why would anyone consider removing a unique coaster like Mantis to replace it with something else.

"And is headbanging NOT considered rough by a lot of people? I don't get your logic, it's like your making an excuse to say Mantis is smooth"
Perhaps what I mean would be more clear if I better define what I'm talking about.

To me, rough is when wheels go slamming about loose track gauges or warped track (see: most any SLC, some Arrow loopers). That's how I define rough. It's like the difference between driving a Lexus on a new freeway or a bicycle down a mountain.

Said rides track very well, including the inverters, floorless, etc. Inverted cobra rolls are called "rough" by many when the train shifts direction, but we know those trains are smoothly tracking through them. Like the stand-ups, it's all about correct riding. I don't find any of the B&M rides listed in this thread to be rough at all (except Chang... haven't been on that one). I'm not making an excuse for any ride, because I don't think they're rough in the first place. I'm not going to get into a war of semantics, that's just the way I see it.

Do coasters actually ride that much differently from day-to-day, causing(sp?) some people to think a ride was the smoothest they ever rode while another thinks it was the roughest?
I get what you are trying to say.

This year, at SFO, Batman's wheels were not replaced frequently enough (Jeff, back me up on this??)

Meaning, during portions of the season, the wheels were past their time, and the ride was rougher. But, when the wheels were newer, it was smoother.

Right... what Mongoose said. I remember media day thinking I was ice skating, but mid-season could actually see the wear, especially in the guide wheels. One other time I could feel a bad road wheel thump underneath me we went up the lift.

I would conclude that all B&M's are smooth, provided the wheels and trains are maintained. Iron Wolf and the original Batman really convinced me of that.

"Wow, CoasterChic, you're one of the only people I have EVER heard say Mantis and smoothest in the same sentence. I don't have a problem at all with Mantis, but it sure isn't one of the smoothest coasters"

I don't agree. Like jeff I think of rough as how well it tracks... and not nessicarily g forces or head banging. Alot of people would say batman is rough, but to me it's really smooth... just incredibly intense.
Mantis is a very smooth ride.... and has surprised me time and time again how standing up could feel that good, especially in comparison to Irow Wolf.
the roughest thing I've ever stepped foot onto is shock wave at sfga, followed closely by the beast. Both great coasters, and ranked high in my book, but glide along the track about as well as barney being dragged behind a truck. Which I wouldn't mind seeing...
but that's for another time, and another forum lol.

Yes, I assumed that different people have different feelings or *definitions* on what rough really is, that's where the confusion sets in. I agree that all B&M's for the most part, track smoothly. The B&M's that rattle in my experience, are every single B&M stand up (save Vortex at PGA since I haven't ridden it), Hulk, Kumba, and Raging Bull. The stand-ups are the ones that rattle and shimmy the most, causing the seat posts to vibrate (especially on IW). This in turns causes peoples' heads to bounce back and forth. This is where my friends get the feeling of Mantis being rough.

So in the end, everyone has different definitions of what "rough" really is. So glad we've gotten that out of the way now! :)

Now, back to your regularly scheduled forum, already in progress.

I would hate it if they converted Mantis. Mantis is one of my favorite rides...it definitely is up there with my very top coasters. For a long time, it was my favorite.

Jman
Rough to me is... Well I suppose the best way to put this is has anyone ever been on the Tornado at Adventureland? Remember the first half of the ride?

You build it, I'll ride it...eventually
Rough to me is headbanging. Iron wolf is the roughest coaster I have ever been on to this date

LOL Randy!! I rode Tornado for the first time this year and OMG...on that first drop I thought I was going to die! :) That thing shook so horribly, it was worse than SOB. This was on the very rear seat. I rode one row from the back and it was much better.

I'll never forget that ride though, it was insanely rough on that drop!

What's up with that Tornado?
I was riding with my little sister, and was trying to explain to her airtime on the way up. What a waste of breath. They should change the name from Tornado to TWA Flight 800:the ride.
Atttitudes have changed. Compare it to my other post "Can you stand....Stand ups." Ypu will see what I mean.
Sorry my spell check didn't work well.
