What was the "Mantis" like when there was no
trim brake on the 1st drop.? Did it have blackout spots on the loop that was angled at 45 degrees.?
What was everyone's 1st reacting after they had been on it.?
I grayed out a few times coming out of the 1st loop before CP added trims. That's where the problem was. The inclined loop, since it's later in the ride, didn't cause blackouts (as far as I know) Everybody I've talked to grayed out during the 1st loop.
The ride was really intense...it still is, but not like it was.
I love the Mantis. Intense or not, it's a great ride! I rode it before it had trim breaks and after. I was fine both times. *shrugs*

When you say gray out, do you mean go unconsious or just simply see gray and feel lightheaded.
The latter, has happened to me, on, believe it or not, Double Loop at SFO in the very back seat.
The latter has happened to me in the back row of Raptor. I've never had anything like that happen on Mantis though, brakes or no brakes.

Thank you riding America's Roller Coast
I almost passed out on Great American Scream Machine at SFGAdv once, a while back. It was a VERY hot day and I hadn't been drinking enough, and then I made the mistake of waiting an hour for that ride, in the heat.
Ever since then I make sure to stay well-hydrated, and I haven't ever had that feeling again.

When I say gray out, I mean my vision turns black and white and my field of vision contracts and starts to blur. It only lasts a few seconds. A roller coaster has never made me go completely unconscious.
Most people complained about pain in the legs from the intense G's, as they do know, but I never had a problem.
With the trims it gives you more air-time in the loop!

I have to agree wiht MooreOn on this one. "Graying out" happens to me every time I ride the Vortex (B&M stand-up at Paramount's Carowinds). The loop is fine, (it's not that big) but the B&W Flat Spin (I think that's what it's called) gets me every time. By the time the ride is over I feel like a pile of mush on my seat and my legs feel like they weigh 100 lbs each. But hey, I'm a roller coaster freak. I like that.

What is life without ups and downs!?!?
the trim brake on the first hill is terrible.
That trim makes little difference in the ride. It's psychological... people get so fixated on the fact that it's there that they're incapable of considering what the ride actually feels like. Trimming the heck out of Mean Streak is one thing, but I've yet to ride another coaster that had any impact on overall ride due to a trim.

I agree Jeff...before I started reading these message boards, I would have barely noticed the trim on Mantis. The MeanStreak hill trim is hard to ignore, but the one on Mantis doesn't slow the train very much, and it doesn't matter anyway. Mantis is still one of my absolute favorite rides. I think I'd probably put it at #3 right now, behind MF and S:ROS(SFDL). I love Mantis...especially those whip turns to the right that happen so suddenly...they're fantastic!

I rode MANTIS in its first season and it rocked. I made the journey again last year and the brake really tamed the first loop. Out of the 3 B&M Standups I've ridden Riddler's Revenge is the best followed by Mantis then Iron Wolf.

At one of the CoasterMania events, I went on 2 times in a row. The first ride, the trim brake definitely kicked in. The second ride, it seemed like it didn't, and the ride was a lot less comfortable. Don't remember any "graying out", but had some uncomfortable head/body banging.
The only time I have ever "grayed out" was on the Millenium Force the second time I rode it. It was at night so I don't know if my eyes were playing tricks on me or what, but it only lasted about two seconds.

Ride 'Till you drop
I personally found that the trims rarely effected *my* ride experience on the Mantis. I think its a good coaster with lots of positive g's....
I went on Mantis and it was awesome even with the trims. I wouldn't care one way or another if they kept them on.

The trims on Mantis ruin it, in my mind, the Psycological effect that they have on the ride is amazing. They just pull all of the momentum right out of the first hill. By the way I didn't grey out on mantis but I did on the Corkscrew. It happend in the middle of the loop, the whole world went grey for a second or two.
