Magic Mountain sued for alleged race discrimination

Posted | Contributed by supermandl

Dozens of suits say Six Flags Magic Mountain is guilty of racial profiling by security. The plaintiffs in these suits say that the park selectively chooses African American and Latino guests and ejects them from the park.

I think they are just out there for the money.
But it seems to me, that the security is doing a great job. Not are problem they dress like gang members.
But they can tell pretty well, who not or in is a gang.
They are making a big deal about riden together.
i guess we will wait and see
Notice everything that happens to them, they call it racism. It may be true, but I have seen cases of that here in NJ, (not at GA) on the parkway. But if it is a waterslide, they need a certain weight in a tube for it to go down. That happened with my sister and her friend, they got stuck in the tube because there wasn't enough weight. They probably did something that the news isn't reporting, which caused them to get thrown out. The news puts out what the people want to hear, not the true story.

it could, and cant be racism. some things are done and maybe it just so happens that they are african americans. but i seriously dont think that every single security guard at MM is white and is rascist!
*sigh* More people out for money by playing the minority card

There is a lot of racism out there. You can see it the posters message above (Enthusiasts) He uses the word THEM to describe African Americans. Another poster (Apollo15) thinks that parks should be able to tell you which clothes you can or can not wear. Maybe he would prefer a standard uniform for Coaster Ethusiasts. It's not cool or hip to discriminate or profile folks because you THINK they MIGHT be gang members because of the clothes they wear. When rules are broken, enforce the rules, but don't put someone under scrutiny because they are a different color. NOT COOL *** This post was edited by Mark Rosen on 8/12/2001. ***
Ok. Maybe those people are the ones who get in trouble, and complaining because the are not white. It would be the same for a white person , if the person was "doing bad things" in the park.

Umm, no i don't think that security judges you by what your are wearing. And I DID NOT SAY A PARK CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT YOU CAN WEAR. I'm saying if you dress like a gang you going to be ask stuff.

I think they just want money. Not all the security at SFMM is WHITE.
I see other security that are black, hispanic and other.

There job at any park is to protect you, or if you break a polocy, THEY have the right to eject you from the park, at any park.. not just SFMM.
I have a feeling we're not hearing the whole story from some of the defendants, but who am I to say. People have to remember that an amusement park is a private space with its own set of rules.

Okay, this is a very interesting subject. NitroExplodes I really don't appreciate you refering to me or any black person as "them." That isn't cool

Apollo you really have to open your eyes because just because all the security isn't white doesn't mean the ones that are there aren't racist. In this case, I really can't tell whats going on. I know that in Detroit we have a lot of race related problems. You may say security out there are all different raves, well here is something that happened here that is similar. These kids are in a mall, black kids, and security takes them aside. The mall is majority African american and so are some of the guards. They beat the crap out of the kid. I believe he sued and won.

Stuff like that can happen anywhere, by me just looking at the artical, I can't tell if it is true or not, but until you have the full story, don't assume that all they want is money.

You are the Weakest Link, Goodbye.
I have the same feeling we're not hearing the whole story. They were probably doing something worthy of getting kicked out of the park. It just happened to turn out they were African American and Latino. Just my opinion.

To clarify Intamin- an amusement park is a public space like a hotel or restaurant
Please you all know that those gaurds were only after the minorites. If it had been a white kid at that ride, then it would have been alright. Guards always follow black and Hispanics b/c they think that were gonna cause some trouble in there beautiful park. It isn't about the money, those guards had no reason to do what they did, its juss one less BLACK kid in the park. And anyway half the time white parents at SFKK curse at the ops and act like to total idiots, but they never get kicked out of the park. Its always the black kid who was running or the mexican who complians about there food that gets kicked out. And I speak nothing but the truth!!!!!!

Sixflags+no money+airport=Sixflags Kentucky kingdom
This isnt right. There is something that is being left out. Probabily the kids forgot to mention that they were cutting people in line or pushing and shoving, but because they didnt want to get in trouble, they told their parents "their version" of the stroy. I have nothing against minorities, I believe that everyone should live in harmony and no one should be on a pedistal, but I also believe that everyone should tell the truth. And that is what is not going on here.

all about PKI
the Beasts` Den
Well untill we have they have a full story.
West is a little bit different than Detroit, are gangs are much bigger, cause more damage.

I'm not saying they are in a gang.

Amusement park is both private and public.
They have the right to eject who ever they feel that may, cause, break park policy or are affilated with a gang. Same goes with all other places.

Black and Latinos are not the only one's who get kick out, Whites do get kicked out, you just don't here about it, becuase they are not sueing for alleging that the park was being racist. Because they broke a park rule or look like they are in a gang

They are just being prejudice about being because they did'nt get to ride together! is there a certian weight you have to be so the raft does not get stuck? I do not know

"They did not even give us a choice," said the cousin, Devonne Brown, now 16, of Palmdale. "They told us to get on the raft [together] or go away." Devonne contends that he and Noah were treated differently "because of our skin color." They are black.

Not saying that every person is in a gang.

I have friend's that maybe look like in a gang, but are'nt
Oh ,so you were there PKI_MAN? I'd like to know what happened then.

Racism exists, it might be in a more subtle form than before, but it still exists. Don't kid yourself and think that people somehow get rid of their personal beliefs when they go to work at an amusement park.
Thats not right why would they do something like that? I agree with Apllo15.
For the whites out there, don't jump to conclusions. You don't know the whole story, nor what it is like to be a minority.
As a brown person I can totally empathize with any other minority, or african american/latino/a citizen. I live in Florida where not many people think racism is a big problem, but I have a couple black friends who refuse to date other blacks. The truth is I could never empathize completely with a white person because my skin is brown, and thats a fact. (Some) White people just dont know how hard it is to be racially discriminated, automatically that switch goes off and says "oh there must be another side to this story." The fact of the matter is that there wasnt another side of the story, those kids were discriminated against. Dont you think the detectives who talked to them would be able to convey another "side of the story" based on facts?
THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!
In response to my own message I apologize for being a hypocrite:
"The truth is I could never empathize completely with a white person because my skin is brown, and thats a fact. (Some) White people just dont know how hard it is to be racially discriminated"
But any white person with any moral would agree that there are few, maybe no discrimination racically when it comes to whites. But whites would never be able to feel the same pain that I feel that comes from discrimination and vice versa.
