Magic Kingdom's Cars land will be called Piston Peak National Park

Posted | Contributed by bigboy

From the Disney Parks Blog:

Imagine an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers. While fictional, Piston Peak is inspired by the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks.

Inside Piston Peak, guests will be able to see and explore the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails and more all set within the Disney and Pixar “Cars” universe. To make sure these buildings fit naturally within the surrounding majestic landscapes, Imagineers are using a style of architecture called “Parkitecture,” which was developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment.

Tron expanded the footprint as well, not by much, but it’s an expansion.

This park is always very overcrowded and it needs to be expanded not have attractions replaced IMO to handle the crowd.

If Magic Kingdom needed an expansion ….. you know the rest.

And in order to do this, they have decided to curtail most of the operation of the Walt Disney World Railroad, which just recently went back into full operation after a lengthy shutdown during the building of "Tron".

Unfortunately customers can only relate to things they see on video now and don’t appreciate being transported back in time.

Have you conducted a focus group to confirm that? Guardians is a pretty great ride, IP or not.

Uh, they're replacing an underutilized piece of land with several new attractions, restaurants and shops, and beyond that adding an entirely new villains land. Aren't they doing exactly what you're saying they're not?

Here someone says that Disney's future is all about IP based attractions while a large sector of Disney social media loses their collective minds over the closure of a 34 year old IP based attraction.

… whose IP was 40 years older than that, and hadn’t been seen in about 20 years.

wahoo skipper:

I'm going to sound like the old guy (which I guess I am becoming). I am sorry to see Rivers of America go. The sound of the Steamship, the raft river crossings, the quiet spaces on TSI. I completely understand why they are doing it, and I'm not saying it won't be nice...but I wish they could have preserved it in the way Disneyland preserved the River when they added Star Wars.

I'm right there with you, and was hoping Rivers of America would've been modified similar to what was done in Anaheim. I took a lap on WDW Railroad during my last visit to MK a couple years ago and paid close attention to the undeveloped land in the area just North of ROA. Maybe that land just wasn't suitable to develop due to excessive swamp areas? The tunnel added in Tomorrowland could've been done a little better after Tron was added. Not asking for a Grand Canyon Diorama/Primeval World, but the bland concrete tunnel reminds me of riding through a highway underpass (which passengers literally experience before arriving at Fantasyland Station).

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was unimpressed with the Tron Tunnel. If nothing else, they could have put up some screens in there and then run projection simulation to give it a Tron feel.

The land to the north has one of the water/flood control canals, and anything there would be pretty close to the fireworks paddock. The latter is immovable because it has to line up behind the castle. And yes, they always have to contend with wetlands. It's not that they can't develop them, but they do have to replace them elsewhere.

There is quite a bit of land clearing to the west, between Pirates and the old Floridian Way. I assume that's where the villain stuff is going.

The park announced at the beginning that Villains Land was going behind Haunted Mansion. The path to Cars Land is supposed to continue to take visitors to Villains. That's also the thematically appropriate place for it. But plans change, so maybe they are placing it near Pirates.

Or maybe I'm lost and missed part of the conversation here.

Interesting, I don't recall seeing that. I guess there's enough room, depending on what exactly they build. Show buildings can extend further back, as is the case with other things around the park. They'll have to be clever with sightlines to hide the back of Mansion and Small World, and the entrance to the utilidors.

If they abandon Floridian Way with the opening of Floridian Place it does open up a lot of square footage on the NW side of the park.

That's if they ever stop pushing around dirt. I can't believe how long that project has taken.

I know, right? Might as well stick a "Welcome To Alaska" sign in the ground exiting the tunnel.

Jeff, I haven't been back that way for so long that I didn't realize it wasn't finished. I sure miss the days of coming in from the back to skip the toll booth and parking fee.
