Limiting Beginner Posting

Before I begin, please understand that I am in no way bashing on the moderators who do their jobs so wonderfully to keep trash out of the forums. I generally visit 1-3 times each day, and each time I click the "mark all posts read" link so that I can tell what I have read and have not when I return. In the less than 9 hours since my last visit, there have been 9 different topics closed. Granted, each of these topics was meaningless and certainly deserved to be closed, but as an honest participant I'm disturbed to see so many in so short a time!

I'm certain that you (moderators) have been trying and trying to find a way to reduce noise without becoming tyrants, which I certainly applaud. I have an idea, I don't know if you've considered it before (and rejected for whatever reason) but I thought I'd suggest it to see what you think.

Rather than limiting the number of posts and individual may make in a day (an option I know has been discussed), how about a sort of "waiting period" for those who newly register? It seems as though most of the closed posts are begun by people I've never seen before, who seem to have joined today and asked their dozen questions right away, without reading the FAQ, other posts, or practicing common courtesy. What if, after registering, you had to wait a 3-10 days before your registration would be "official" and you would be allowed to post? This way, a lot of these noisemakers would probably lose interest or forget the idea before the end of the waiting period, thus the posts would never be made in the first place.

I registered more than a year ago (I think!), so I've forgotten if something like this is already in effect or has been put into practice since. My apologies if this is so, it's just a thought!

A waiting period isn't fair to people who can contribute something instantly, so I don't want to do that.

After running moderated forums for three years now, I can tell you that the noisy folks don't stay long. You just have to grin and deal with it from time to time while some of us are out enjoying free beer and Discovery shows at Cedar Point. ;)

A waiting period isn't fair to people, just like Jeff said.

That's true, you're right, it just get frustrating to see so many beginners without a clue! Thanks for the input!

StealthmF5m3: "Me too" posts like yours are just the kind of thing I consider noise, and they bother me even more when they kiss up to me.

Jeff, do you consider praising/complimenting you to be kissing up?

No, that's fine, but I don't like it when someone says, "Yeah, what Jeff says all the way!"
