Life without Shockwave?

OtSR are the same thing as lap bars. When you pull them down, the bottom touches your lap. That whole thing on the side of you is just there for extra protection. A large Lap Bar such as the ones on B&M hypers would be a good size. If covers way more of your lap, which is what you are held by.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people.
Another reason for the harnesses are to keep riders BACK against the back rest. When a coaster hits a loop (especially on old ones like the Revolution at MM) if you're not back (or know how to 'ride' the ride) you're head will go down towards the floor. This used to happen alot with kids riding the Tidal Wave way back at SFGAm.

Trust me, I hate the shoulder bars, and would love nothing more than to have them all burn in hell. Just making a point on how the theme park industry thinks.

But from another point of view, I think the harnesses probably cause more injuries!

This happened to me the first time I rode Tidal Wave, and it is NOT a pleasant feeling.
