Led Zeppelin coaster will be featured at Hard Rock Park

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The creators of the Hard Rock theme park, under construction in Myrtle Beach, S.C., will announce details today of the park's signature ride: a 150-foot-tall steel roller coaster with a Led Zeppelin theme. The looping attraction is one of more than 40 rock 'n' roll-themed amusements planned for the 140-acre theme park. It's scheduled to open in spring 2008.

There is a picture of the model on another site. Based on the model, elements are: straight lift -> straight drop -> vertical loop -> cobra roll -> zero-g roll -> vertical loop -> half helix/spiral drop thingy -> brake run -> twisted finale featuring at least one flat spin. The trains appear to be the "regular" sit-down type, like on Wildfire. (And if the first drop is like the one on Wildfire, be sure to sit in the back for major airtime.)

I'm not a huge Zeppelin fan, but I like the coaster/soundtrack combination. Should be fun!

So I'm assuming this is a B&M? based on the picture....
John Hunt over at Roller Coaster Models.com has already built a model of the LZ coaster. I don't know if he's actually been contracted to do the model for the HRP, or if he is just adding it to his list of products he can build. Anyway, here's the link...this coaster looks like it's going to be awesome.

Well I'm 20 and I enjoy alot of classic rock like the Beatles, Boston and Aerosmith. You guys have to remember as well that Green Day is popular in this generation but they wearn't born yesterday either they started in the mid 80's.You also can't forget the godfathers of punk Bad Religion who have a new cd coming out in June.
Classic Rock is British Invasion music/mid 6,0's and not Led Zepplin. The coaster should be good, the music will do little to enhance the ride experience.

^^^ REALLY good find. Based on what we've got (B&M, the layout, the helix, location and direction of helix based on the renderings and whatnot, Led Zeppelin theme)....I'd say it's HIGHLY likely that the model IS an accurate depiction of what to expect for that ride. Love the zeppelin station! :)

Few quick notes on why classic rock is still popular with kids today...

A lot of them are still touring and writing albums. I don't think Aerosmith will ever stop putting albums out. I saw them in concert a year ago and Steven Tyler was still running up and down the stage like a twenty year old (no more back flips, though ;)). I know that two of the band members of Led Zeppelin are still touring every once and a while. A lot of these "classic" artists still end up on billboard's top 40 from time to time and it hits the kid's radar.

I disliked Classic Rock when I was a kid, but as I grew up, I began to appreciate it for how it has affected the different styles of today. As for the coaster...based on the model, I think it looks boring. Out of the station "straight" into the lift, "straight" down the first drop, "straight" loop (can we please not go straight anymore? Thanks.), Cobra Roll (Convenient way to change the direction 180), Zero-G Roll (The only thing that saves the ride, imho), another "straight" loop, some kind of altitude changing helix to the "right"(maybe like Mantis, which will be kind of cool on a sit down looper), then "straight" up to the mcbr, then the boring part of a banked turn hill to the "right", a "flatspin" (corkscrew) to the "right", another helix to the "right" (where's the change of direction that all great coasters have?), and finally the safety brakes before ANOTHER "right" turn into the station. That's a lot of straight track and right turns, people.

EDIT---I mean right turns...Changed and thanks for pointing it out.

I see lots of "right" turns myself. :)
<<<<<the godfathers of punk Bad Religion who have a new cd coming out in June. >>>>

well, wrong forum, i love those guys, but i think the 'godfathers' of punk may be more along the lines of iggy pop, mc5... ramones, blondie at the least :) punk is little diff than 'hardcore' (in some ways the stones, just dont tell anyone)

this ride looks great, but very typical B&M. zeppelin would be a great theme! but they sureley need a woodie!

immagrint song or communication breakdown ;)

This is like a dream come true. Led Zeppelin is my all time favorite band, no doubt.

Here are some themes I think it could have that haven't been mention:

Achilles Last Stand

Rock and Roll

Battle of Evermore

Heartbreaker

Trampled Under Foot

Yeah, I love classic rock.

Heart did a good remake of Battle of Evermore.
^I never knew that. That's pretty awesome.

^^^L.P. I did suggest "Rock n Roll".

And while I'd also *love* Immigrant Song, I think that's more suited to a launched coaster...since the song starts out hard and fast... ;)

This park theme has been LONG since overdue... :)

I'm kind of surprised they didn't pick Rock 'n Roll as the song, but I'm also glad at the same time. I think it should be a medley of songs. Perhaps the slow, gentle portion of Stairway To Heaven as you ascend the lift, then something fast like Rock 'N Roll as you drop into the elements, than change it up a bit from there.
Was it just a thought out of the blue or did I orginally hear that this was goingto be a hyper coaster?

For what it's worth, I never heard such a rumor, and a buddy of mine has been keeping close tabs on the HRP project and has always said it was going to be a B&M looper.
This would be a cool song sequence for the ride:

station/pre-lift: What is and What Should Never Be

lift: Stairway to Heaven

next few element sequences: We're Gonna Groove

next: Rock and Roll

MCBR and element after: The Song Remains the Same

next few elements: The Wanton Song

Last few elements: Communication Breakdown

Brake Run/re-entering station: Fool in the Rain or Celebration Day

Sorry 'Gator, I was too thrilled when I saw a Led Zeppelin themed coaster and I do agree with you that this theme is LONG overdue. One thing we all must realize is how the park is going to get rights to the songs. I think the only song Led Zeppelin has released rights for commercials and other things thus far is Rock and Roll.

I'm sure we'll get to hear all of these songs while waiting in line. Now if only they'd do a Van Halen ride for me. :)

How anyone can judge a coaster based purely on stats or a model is beyond me. Many coasters with far-from-record-breaking stats or that might appear boring or "forceless" based on a model or layout schematic turn out to be just the opposite.

Likewise many coasters with impressive stats or what looks to be an exciting layout end up being a major disappointment.

I prefer to ride before I judge.
