Knott's Berry Farm or SFMM?

I personally would go to Knott's, it is one of my favorite parks I've ever visited.

Have you ever been to either? It can be a tough decision, and you should base it on your personal likes. Do you like Quantity or Quality? Would you rather ride something outlandish, or more traditional (actually, both parks can almost qualify there)? Do you like Wood coasters better than steel? If so, would you take one REALLY good woodie over 2 bad ones?

It is a tough decision. If I had to choose tomorrow, I'd actually go to SFMM, since I still have quite a few credits I missed there. That, and X, Goliath, and a few other things were really good.

Too bad you're in SoCal... I think it'd be amazing to get to PGA...

My home park is SFGAm just like yours, and I think PGA would be a sort of... 'Dimension X' per se.

As for these parks, I haven't been to any of them in years, but way I'd say it is... if you like the atmosphere of Six Flags parks (ton of rides not much atmosphere) go to SFMM... however if you're going for experience and fun, KBF is a great place... it feels a little different/more relaxed there.

Of course DisneyLand is another option which is always a fun place to escape reality...

Shocks... pegs... lucky! .... you ever take it off any sweet jumps?
Yeah, I'd just rather go to DCA and stay on ToT all day myself, if I had all the SFMM credits and just happened to be in SoCal for no good reason.
Im going to Socal in 3 weeks, and I am going to visit both! I have already been to Magic Mountain, but I would really like to get on Deja Vu for the first time and X again.

I like disco.

John....true, H:XLC *as a coaster* was lacking in virtually every facet but one. But even after TTD, the instantaneous thrust from the air-launch is unmatched IMO.

Xcelerator was good, TTD better, but H:XLC was best. I'd LOVE to get a ride on Dodonpa myself! :)

If I were going to Knott's on a Saturday, I'd definitely take a midday break for Adventure City....and Zankhou Chicken (which I did NOT get on the Solace trip, LOL)...

1) Drive time is somewhere around 1 hour less from LA.

It probably depends on the traffic, but you should make it without problems from downtown LA to Valencia/SFMM in 1 hour (I'd rather guess 45 minutes are enough).
I'm not sure how far KBF is from "Downtown", but it's probably not much less.

But once you stand in line for a coaster for over 1 hour, those extra 15 minutes probably won't make much of a difference.

I'd do Knott's, as you might have a fighting chance of more than four operational coasters.

I agree with everyone here. I have a free day in LA next week. I haven't ridden X, nor been to SoCal in 6 years. Guess where I'm going...DIsneyland :) #2 choice would be Knotts. SFMM is WAY down my list of things to do!

Crap...are you coming out here? Why didn't you tell me? ;)
I think I'd go to SFMM at opening and see how much I could get done, starting with X and circling the park. And if the day goes well you could brave the trip to KBF. The only thing you'd lose is the drive time down there. Even if you only get a couple of hours at Knott's, you could still pick up a ride on GR and whatever else you can fit in.

That's just me, though. I think every coaster buff must experiance X - it's one of a kind.

To being an "us" for once - instead of a "them".

From personal experience this would be a tough one. Basically you are trading off X or Xcelerator, but I tell you Xcelerator is no X.

For an overall experience I would choose KBF, as the theming and food make the park experience much better. However, if you are looking at some serious thrills I would probably have more fun riding X, Scream, Goliath, and Riddlers Revenge over and over than I would with Xcelerator and GR, though Montezumas Revenge is fun too.

X is awesome both day and night, worth paying the admission for 3 or 4 rides on X alone.

If you can manage to ride X 3 or 4 times with a 3 hour line, sure.
Coming from a local, Knott's is probably not your best pick if you're visiting from out of state. The park, though it has its share of good rides, can be easily be fully patronized within a few hours - leaving you to ride some of the same attractions over and over, and believe me, after a few runs on Xcelerator, GhostRider, and the other bigguns, you'll be left wanting something more and the park begins to get old. And the theming nowadays at Knott's under Cedar Fair's reign has gone below par - a huge downgrade from its glorious past. So bad that all of the newer themed attractions are nothing better than what you'll find at Magic Mountain. The venerable Ghost Town area is the only true "theming" you'll see at Knott's now.

But it all depends on what you're looking for. For thrillrides and a LOT of above average giant coasters, hands down go to Magic Mountain. For a small mom/pop park experience with a mix of a select few high-tech gadget rides, go to Knott's.

I have a lot of friends that visit out of town and go to both parks and it's always unanimous they like Magic Mountain alot better.

I'm just sayin', don't take all the stereotypical Six Flags downtalk straight to the head. You really have to consider.

That's the problem, because what you said is just not true. SFMM doesn't have flats (thrill rides) and only one or 2 coasters are the "above average giants". THe rest are SBNO (Flashback), just plain crap (Psyclone, etc.), not worth riding anymore (Revolution, etc.), or just "meh". If I went back to SFMM I'd ride X, maybe take a spin on Riddler, and that's really about it. After that I'd high-tail it to Knotts or Disney!

At SFMM I loved X, Goliath, and Riddler and found Viper to be above average. That seems to be pretty much on-par with the opinions of a lot of folks I've talked to. I also loved Ninja, but nobody ever gets to ride it because it's never open.

The thing with SFMM is it's not consistant. I happened to be there on a weekend when everything was running, crowd levels weren't too bad, and there was 2 train operation on X. That's not typical. I saw how easily SFMM could turn into hell on earth from both a crowd and capacity standpoint.

Going to SFMM is a gamble. KBF is more of a low-risk investment.

When I took the risk of visiting Magic Mountain in '03, I was actually somewhat impressed. I already expected Deja Vu and Flashback to be closed, so that didn't surprise me. X was using 1 train operation, which made for a 2.5 hour wait. Everything else had multiple trains running and the lines were not too bad. So I am taking the gamble again this year and visiting the park again.

I like disco.

In the summer during peak season? No way! That's true only in the off-season when the park has a few thousand guests.
