The Steeplechase FT is my favorite design of the 8 made as it feature a real coaster drop before launching into the multiple bowls.

Thanks for checking those out Jim. When you say the Steeplechase FT had a real coaster drop, do you mean as in a "down & up" type drop?

The Lake Placid Bobsled had 2 straight drops but both of them went directly into banked turns.

Drop 1:

Drop 2:

This was supposedly the most violent of the old FT's. Also had a very short lifespan.

The World's Fair/Riverview was a pretty small ride. But I wouldn't complain a bit. Still looks like fun in this aerial:

Swampfoxer:

Yes I mean a "down & up" drop. When the train left the station it went up a lift and and made a turnaround then made I believe a 65 foot drop and a 45 foot ascent and then into the standard bowls (I don't know what other word to use). If you look at the picture that you linked you can see the drop in the upper left hand portion of the picture - it runs alongside the Steeplechase tracks which are on the very far left. Here's a postcard view of the first drop: http://members.aol.com/coasting2/flyingturns.html

Keep in mind - that these are small, compact rides - I would guess that they were all about 2000 feet long give or take. They also had insanely long brake runs.

In regards to the Palisades version - that was an unmitigated disaster. They experimented with a larger trough and large drops to increase the speed. Joseph McKee - who ran and supervised most of the rides there - modified the ride several times during it's construction making it even more violent.

Jim

Sorry you just aren't up on what kids these days are listening too, Mooshino! ;)

Hey, it happens when you're 40.

So how do I apply for designing the rolling stock?!? Seriously... I will do it.

Considering what GCII has done for the "retro trains" from the 1920s-era, I'd think they'd have to be considered front-runners for the job of designing trains for this project....if they're so inclined. If not, maybe coasterpunk could build some on his own time, in exchange for a lifetime pass to Knoebels of course...;)

Gator - I think due to insurance issues GCI will only design trains for coasters they create. They've been asked...up until now they won't do it.

CPunk...can you shed some light on the matter?

Who's Alicia Keys? And I'm only 39!

I know who Alicia Keys is. She had a hugely popular debut album and was nominated for a ton of Grammy Awards....then followed it up with a second CD that seemingly no one cared about.

Here today, gone tomorrow...so-long, Alicia!

did she win best new artist the year she was in everyone's face...if so I rest my case...

with a quick search http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alicia_Keys ... yep she did... welcome to obscurity alicia... *** Edited 10/14/2005 4:54:36 PM UTC by dragonoffrost***

Watch the tram car please....
I have wondered before why we don't see more Millenium Flyers on coasters. Moosh, that does make sense. I think some coasters out there could certainly benefit from them if the trains would fit well and the structure support them. It would even be possible for a once terrible coaster to become top 25 or even top 10 material.

Didn't I hear somewhere that Hershey's Wildcat was possibly going to be fitted with the new flyers? Maybe I was dreaming...

Up until now, true....but I don't know that Knoebels is in the same ballpark as everyone else. First, Sunbury and Elysburg are in close proximity, and GCII could certainly do at least SOME design/consulting on a project like this one, since the track layout *favors* the more twisty-turny deliciousness we've come to expect from Jeff, Clair, Chris and the gang...

I know it's unlikely at best....but I can hope! :)

Agreed, and besides, how easy would maintenance be if they were contracted for it? That's what CPunk, a 20-30 mile drive?

I'm from Lewisburg, so I don't go to Knoebels via Sunbury. ;)

Great Coasters would put the Flyers on their rides HP Wildcat, Gwazi, Roar East. I'm not sure if they would put them on another companys structure.

I know it's not as simple as just pulling the current trains off and putting the Flyers on. I know some things need to be relocated on the structure.

I'm sure if Knoebels asked for advice Great Coasters would give it to them. As for the trains I think it's safe to say we will only be building Millennium Flyers.

From the GCII Office/Shop to Knoebels is about 12 miles, if you know the back roads. :) And the backroads wern't the ones you took to get to the office for the open house.

Actually, I think the world would come with ziplock bags. ;)

Man, what a great year for wood!

Mmm, PA back roads. I love them. If you drive fast enough (not recommended) you can actually get airtime on a lot of the hills. :)

I can vouch for that. When I used to ride out to my dad's house (who lives in Elysburg), he used to go 40-50 over some of the hills. Gave me a nice little thrill when I was like 8...

There was this one road on the way to my house, and I'm sure none of you know where it is save for maybe CPunk. (Ever heard of Vicksburg? It's a little village on Rt. 45 going west from Lewisburg.) Anyway, it has a nickname locally for being roller coaster road. Some of the hills, if hit at 55-60 mph you can actually feel the front wheels of your car lift. Good times.

Not sure how that's related, but we were talking about rural roads, so...

PS- I rolled my car on that road as well, I thought it needed an inversion or two. Too bad I only got halfway through the loop and landed on my roof. :)

Are we looking at a "bobsled revival"?

:)

...then followed it up with a second CD that seemingly no one cared about.

Her second album was actually much, much better. And it scored at least 3 Billboard top 10 hits, and in all 4 top 20 hits which is better than her 2 top 10 on the first album, and she won 4 out of 4 nominations at the Grammys this year, so I'd say someone's still listening ;).

Oh, and Gator, differen't kind of Bobsled ;). *** Edited 10/15/2005 4:10:36 AM UTC by TeknoScorpion***
