Knoebels and Hersheypark building new roller coasters for 2015, what about Dorney?

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

It seems 2015 will be the year for some unique new roller coasters in Pennsylvania. Hersheypark announced last week it will build a combination dark ride and roller coaster next year that will have elements of a fun house. Knoebel's amusement park, known for its wooden coasters, has said it will build a steel roller coaster with four inversions. So far, Dorney Park isn't giving hints about new rides for 2015.

Road Rally also came from Cedar Point.

Did Road Rally come about when Cedar Point whittled their Turnpike ride down to one track?

And Bunky, Dorney went without a carousel for some time. They'd had several antique rides throughout the years, but they were either dismantled and sold or lost due to fire. The most interesting and unique of those was the Chanticleer, a ride where the figures were roosters and ostriches. It had spent time in the ocean after the transport ship from Europe sank, and when it was finally raised it operated at Coney Island's Steeplechase then was sold to Dorney. It ran for a number years but was destroyed during a fire while in a storage barn at the park.
Of the two they have now, only one is an antique. The main carousel at the entrance is the one that came from CP, where it was the Frontier Carousel back in Frontier Town. When Dorney expanded to include the new CP-style midway Cedar Fair saw the need for a great ride and moved it. It's a typical and valuable Dentzel/PTC machine from the 1920's, and Daniel Muller was the carver on some figures including the legendary military horse. The ride is said to be haunted. I was sad to see it leave CP but they had four machines and Dorney really needed it. The housing is exactly like the one CP built for their Midway Carousel.
The other ride is from the 1980's and is a Chance reproduction carousel done in the style of the old PTC's. Only in fiberglass. It carries the unimaginative name Chance Carousel.

It's the military horse itself that's said to be haunted (by the ghost of the wife of Daniel Muller). I believe the actual horse is still at Cedar Point, in the Town Hall Museum, and there are replica horses on the ride and in Sandusky's Merry Go Round Museum.

That's right, I had forgotten about that. There's an armored horse there, too, which if I recall correctly was the subject of the postage stamp.

When I worked at Cedar Point there were stories of that ride firing up all by itself in the middle of the night.
Here's a story about the legend of the haunted horse.

They kind of took the fun out of it by going and taking pictures of the horse :-)

Apparently the ghost of Mrs Muller gets around, I've read that people have reported footsteps walking around the replica in the Museum, which were attributed to her spirit being present.

I'd really like to vote up the whole second page of this topic. Very interesting history about the carousels. The merry-go-round by the Ferris wheel isn't the one that used to be down by the Scrambler and the Whip? I didn't know that! I really thought they moved the original carousel to the top of the hill and then for no apparent reason brought in a second one. Never made much sense to me (although the Ferris wheel one isn't very pretty relatively speaking compared to the entrance one). You really do learn something new every day. This is my home park, and I had no idea! I've been going there for 30 years (although I might have skipped a few seasons when I went through an every-ride-makes-me-sick phase).

You know what I'd really like to see even more than a new coaster? If someone could re-design an Iceberg/Meteorite Cuddle-Up type ride, that would be the coolest thing ever. Between the light/laser show, the loud-as-sh** music, and the whole ride being inside in air conditioning, Iceberg/Meteorite was a winner and always had a long line. I think it would still be successful today.

We've had the Cuddle Up discussion before, but to reiterate briefly...

It's one of my all time favorite flats. All that are left today are the two table Crazy Daisy versions. Zamperla has the technology and offers a two table ride portable ride called Demolition Derby. They also supplied the multi-table Cars rides at Disneyland Paris and California Adventure. So its possible to recreate a version just like the original, and here's hoping.

Bunk, did you know your Iceberg/Meteorite ride was originally an outdoor Cuddle Up? That area where it sat always had kind of a "new" look to it, though, and I found out that it was the lone survivor of one of Dorney's (many, I think) fires. All buildings and attractions in that area surrounding it were destroyed, but somehow the Cuddle Up was spared. I remember reading about it in Amusement Business when Dorney decided to enclose and "theme" the ride, adding an entertainment factor that would appeal to kids and teens.
