Kennywood....A Love Thread

Possibly.

It didn't bother me as much since no one was there. It still was very unsettling for me which is exactly why we didn't stay long. I can only stomach it for very small periods of time. :)

There is just something about walking through the tunnel into the park. It seems so small and far away, but it is getting bigger and brighter until finally you are there. Sometimes I wish I was a kid again simply so I could run through the tunnel into the park (that is until I get clotheslined by those employees who want to take your picture).

I wonder how many CoasterBuzz'ers remember when the MAIN entrance didn't need that tunnel?

As I recall there were two entrances, one over by the Starlite Pool (the old "pay" parking lot) and the one by the streetcar layover point, which is where the tunnel is. This is per a plot map of Kennywood dated July 15,1948.(see "Kennywood -Roller Coaster Capitol of the World" by Charles J. Jacques,Jr.).
Not quite. The one over by the pool was an exit only. The single entrance was, as you say, at the streetcar unloading island. Even the people coming up from the railroad cars walked along the park boundary and came in that entrance. The Turnpike was not there then. As you entered the park the first ride to the right was the Old Mill. To your left was the Rotor. The old Rotor building is still there but has housed various shops over the last couple of decades.

For a while you actually DID come in over at the one "by the pool". The pool was gone, but there was an entry gate for the pay parking under the Laser Loop. Either that, or our parents always took us in through an exit

Trekker Park, I remember walking through the tunnel , past Laff n The Dark, then the Old Mill, with a Roll o Plane(?) to the left. This is before the first Rotor (a Mack, I believe) came to the park. The Laff n The Dark was removed in the early sixties for the first version of the Turnpike.

The Sunlite gate was was both and entrance and exit. There was also a time that if you came with a group( school picnic buses, etc.) that they parked the buses down behind the Racer and Jackrabbit and you entered the park through what's now a service gate between the shooting gallery and the Jackrabbit.

That was before my time.

Let's just say there is no such thing as a small order of fries at the Patch.

I remember entering the park beneath the loop of the Laser Loop. Nothing beats entering the park with that loud, distinctive roar above your head.

Actually, that entrance is roughly in the same spot where the entrance to Lost Kennywood is today, isn't it?

The Laser Loop entrance is the building that very faintly is still painted with the Kennywood logo that is to your right in the Phantom's Revenge line. So yea, its still there, Lost Kennywood's entrance was built right beside it.

Is there any park in the world that has the magic of Kennywood at night? Maybe thats just my hometown-bias showing through, but Cedar Point can't beat Kennywood at night, no matter how many incredible rides they install. And the Kangaroo is the best flat ride of all time!

Anyone else hear the rumors of a steel-looper in the near future?

I love the Potato Patch fries, the airtime on PR and Jack Rabbit, the lateral G's on Thunderbolt, the weightless feeling on Pittfall, the out of control madness feeling on Exterminator, and almost everything else!

What I love at Kennywood is EVERYTHING! My favorite flat ride is the Flying Carpet, coaster.....well that's kind of hard?? Phantom Revenge/Thunderbolt;) And who can't forget about there favorite cheese fries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coming in 2003/2004:)

:)KENNYWOOD:)

I love absolotely everything about Kennywood! My first trip there was for safety patrol day in May of 1975 and I've been hooked ever since! I was even lucky enough to work at the park for 6 seasons. I even met my future wife there- I worked at the Pirate and Bayern Kurve, she at the Merry Go Round/Paratrooper/Kangaroo/Calypso. Now the great pleasure is in taking our children there for the day and seeing their joy and excitement when entering the park. It's hard to express in words, but Kennywood just has something special that makes it easy to fall in love with. I LOVE KP!
I geuss it would be in poor taste to piss on a Shelia E.-like "Love Baazar" on KennyWood, so istead of going into a *complet* diatribe on my feelings of the park, I'll simply say that Phantom's Revenge is one of the better coasters I've ridden!

Hostyl must be in a good mood to pass on the oportunity to rain on our parade. He's a bad man...

No, the building with the logo on the side of it is the Laser Loop Substation which feeds power to the Phantom and a few smaller areas.

The Loop Entrance was exactly where the Lost KW entrance is. The gift shop there used to be the guest relations building.

...and if you heard anything about a steel looper in the future I can assure you that it was just a rumor. That's not in the plans.

Richmmo, did your wife work for "Saccy" or was it after he retired?

I agree 100% on the supposed coaster (thinking back about the rumors of a giga at Kennywood). Yes I am sure they do have room on the ravine next to the train, but I really don't think they have THAT much money to use. I'm sure if we just wait and enjoy Kennywood as it is now, something big will delight us in the future.

Yes, that would be treading in dangerous waters. I wouldn't want this crowd pissed at me either (not that they all haven't been at one time or another)....

But seriously, it's a fun park for a day, and I like nearly everything about it. They are going to have problems attracting the huge crowds seeking new rides in the future for obvious reasons - there isn't much room left for "big" coasters, and there's really nothing left for them to "remake" (unless that rumor about adding the first ever inversion on a water ride comes true) . In my opinion, Kennywood does not have the "revisitability" of other parks, pretty much once per season is enough (or once every other season). Beyond that, I get really bored...there's just not enough there to hold my interest.

And here I said I wouln't "piss on their parade".....

BTW, I totally made up that bit about an inversion on a water ride. I don't want to see any threads about a
"cobra roll to be added on the Old Mill?" next time I visit this site.....
