Kennywoods new coaster, Phantom's Revenge, was revealed today as the replacement for Steel Phantom. According to the park's spokeswoman, the first two drop will be retained, but will have no inversions. It is expected to reach speeds of 85 mph. The chassis of the coaster and the location of the loading station will also remain part of the Phantom's Revenge.
D.H. Morgan will design the new track, which will be 200 feet longer, bringing the total length to 3,200 feet. It is also said the a camelback hump will be added between the first 2 drops, as well as a tunnel.
This is the second time that Kennywood has revamped an exisiting coaster. The first being the Pippin (built in 1924), which was redesigned in 1968 and emerged as the famous Thunderbolt.
Fans of the Steel Phantom have until Labor Day to get their final ride.
The information gathered above was from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
yippie! I wonder if more hills and turns will be added.
What's the point of that? Why don't they just build a giga coaster or something? If it's going to have the same type of 225 foot drop, why not keep the Phantom?

I have never been to Kennywood, and I haven't ridden Steel Phantom, but if it is the second drop that they are retaining, couldn't there be a bigger hill put where the first one is now? I don't know, like I said I haven't seen it, so that could be completely impossible. Can anyone shed some light on that for me?
The point is to get rid of the part of the ride that people don't like (the inversions), while keeping what works (the drop).
Personally, I'm REALLY looking forward to the new ride.

It will have more drops and some bunny hops. It will appeal to more people, and should be smoother since DH Morgan will build the track for it.
TO REDESIGN A GREAT RIDE AND MAKE IS A WEAK COASTER IS JUST SAD. KENNYWOOD HAD THE OPPURTUNITY TO PUT IN A RIDE WITH SOME PIZZAZ. SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT. AND ALL THEY ARE DOING IS CREATING A LAME RIDE. IF I WANTED UPS AND DOWNS AT KENNYWOOD THEY HAVE THREE GREAT WOODEN COASTERS FOR THAT. ALL THEY COULD HAVE DONE, AND THEY DO THIS. THE ONLY THING WORSE IS IF THEY PUT IN ANOTHER WOODEN COASTER. ACTUALLY A MEGA WOODEN COASTER WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.
I live near Kennywood and the placement of a giga coaster was kinda impossible. Where the lift is right now, if it went another 50 ft up, it would run into the road. They could have made it steeper and would probably been able to make a 260 FT drop without running into the road. Remember - Kennywood is a family park. They could have probably broken the record but would have had to take out some other rides. Oh well, I am dissipointed, but I'm excited for a better ride.
I guess some people will not be happy no matter what is built.
Personally I'm really looking forward to it. I always loved the first two hills and didn't really care for the rest of the ride. What excites me most though is the lap bars. :) ;)

You know, the few times I rode (suffered through) the Phantom I thought "This would be a great coaster without the loops and those dang horsecollars". I guess I'll get a chance to find out if I was right. As far as being disappointed with the their plans, I would rather look forward to the ride that's being built, than mourn the one that's not.

I'm very disappointed. I was hoping for a huge new, exciting concept, but instead, Kennywood threw us this mediocre idea. The loops, albeit rough, made the Steel Phantom the only steel coaster in the U.S. with a drop over 200 feet tall and loops. That's what made the phantom so intense. Now, they're just going to turn it into another generic hypercoaster. If I were Kennywood, I would have added a loop at the end of the ride or something! However, on the good side, the Revenge should still be a great ride and will make more money for the park, but as a coaster it doesn't look like it'll measure up to it's predecessor.
What! All the "excitement" for a "giga-coaster" is really just a hypercoaster. People were "SO EXCITED" that a giga-caoster would be there. Ok people, take a breath. All the excitement is over, I personal though they should just keep it there so no people would cry about it being destroyed.

That's got my vote for the most offensive post I've seen on this site.

CoasterRick, Kennywood doesn't really compete with Six Flags or Cedar Point at all. A lot of people (including myself) like the fact that Kennywood is a traditional park.
Also, everyone, please take the cat off the caps lock, it makes your posts so much harder to read.

I have to admit that I'am dissappointed that Kennywood is not getting a giga. I really thought they would. I feel stupid because I have been saying on many posts that people who didn't think Kennywood would get a giga were underestimating Kennywood. Well obviously you were right and I'am eating crow now. I will still be making a trip to Kennywood next year and I'am looking forward to riding the new coaster and the other great coasters at Kennywood. Although not as much as I was when I thought they were getting a giga.
KingsIslandFreak, thank you for pointing that out. (THERE IS NO REASON TO SHOUT - we can hear you just fine!)
I think a lot of you are jumping to conclusions. There are no real details that have been released as of yet.
As of now, we know the following:
1. The first 2 drops will be retained.
2. The second drop will be 5 feet longer.
3. Speed will reach 85 mph.
4. OTSR's are gone.
5. There will be a tunnel ending somewhere between the Thunderbolt and the Turtle.
6. Phantom's Revenge is the name.
The rest is a mystery (including the manufacturer, which has not been verified.) They could add certain elements that could knock your socks off, but right now, we don't know. So ease up on the emotions a bit until we really know the specifics.

What happen to the guy who said Kennywood would built a giga with LIMS and a 325ft third drop? Where are you now mister? LOL!
wow, i was actually hoping that maybe they would have made (some how) a 300 ft drop after the second (the second drop would climb 200 feet in the air and then drop 300 ft. into another ravine or an underground tunnel). I know this could have never been done, but, you never know. Even thou the Phantom doesn't sound that much better, I still will be waiting inline when it opens.
*by the way, i heard some where it was suppose to break a world record, i dont see any records broken there.

The only thing that i dont like about this news is that if kennywood was going to make a new coaster and get rid of the phantom then why not make something totally new and a different experience. Now you already know part of the ride and uve been there done that and i think they shouldve just got a whole new layout instead of the same first part.

Get tothe POINT I agree with you why don't they have something brand spankin new? Because Kennywood isn't smart enough. KingsIslandFreak Kennywood could compete with Cedar Point and Six Flags but they don't want to because they want to keep it traditional. And the manger of Kennywood said they didn't want Phantom's Revenge to go upside down, then why did they build the Aero 360?
