Just installed GeForce 4

Just got my spankin' new 64meg ddr Geforce4 installed.  I couldnt run NL before.  I just set all the options to max and let it fly now.  The fps meter doesnt move. NL likes this card.
I WANT I WANT I WANT.  I am gonna some how steal your geforce 4 while typing this.  its all mind over matter...................... ohhh forget it i will just wait for something good to come up.

The game has a FPS cap at 100, so I'd assume that's what he's getting.

Hurricane, save your money, get a 3. Nobody really needs a 4, and 3s still look great, not to mention are gonna get cheap. Don't get me wrong, I still envy you, DaCoasterMan, even with my GeForce 3 Ti 200.

I envy anyone who has a working video card, my brand new GeForce 3 video card I found out is incompatiable with my new motherboard therefor No Limits freezes up everytime I run it or any other 3d game.

Well, you should feel happy, but...

I took Jeff's advice and bought a dirt cheap (ok, well $90, but compared to the $400 GeForce 4...) GeForce 2 MX 400 last week. Heck, stuck with PCI ports, I couldn't do any better.

I was amazed at how much better the game looked. At 1074x768 rez. I get between 60-80 FPS, 100 while everything's at a bare minimum, and about 20-25 when everything's kicked up.

For No Limits, all you need is a high end two, or low end three... Don't plop the $400 down just for NL, as it is not picky at all.

I've never seen a reason to buy the top of the line. Granted, my first entry into 3D land was from Rendition (remember them?). Rendition easily had the best bang for the buck, in the days when people were plopping down tons of cash for a 3dfx Voodoo 2 (which was physically a seperate card from your video card), all for a few extra frames on Quake.

When Nvidia started selling the first TNT, there was a new player that was slightly slower, but miles ahead in image quality. They started advancing by leaps and bounds on a six-month product cycle, to the point we're now at. All through those cycles, the card one or two steps down has always been adequate. Why? Because software designers know that you can't target the high-end because they won't sell any software (that and their development cycles are longer).

Steph and I both have GeForce 2 MX cards in our machines. Sure, NoLimits will dip down to around the upper 20's from time to time on high-poly frames, but I can deal with that.

Right now the GeForce 4 MX cards can be had for around $120 by mail order, and that ain't bad. From what I've read, it's really more like a GeForce 3 variant, but those cards are closer to $200, so you do the math.

Ya know, 3D video cards are a hella ripoff.  The No Limits demo runs perfectly on my computer and that's with a TNT2! (which is primitive to the GeForce 1)  If you keep upgrading you are wasting like 300-400 dollars a year.

I know it's off topic, but if it's from the hotel room I had, it's the roar of Kumba.

My Frame rate is pegged at about 75.  Didnt know it went to 100.  Even so, at that speed you almost can get vertigo on some of the tracks.  I was gonna just get a geforce 2 but at 179 for the G4, I couldnt pass up the deal.  I have never bought the top of the line either but it does feel good this time.  Now i just gotta figure out the editor.  The monster G4 with 128meg ddr ram comes out next month for 400.  That is a ridculous purchase imho.
I would not recommend getting a GeForce 4 MX.  It's not worth the money, considering they do not have full Direct X 8.1 support.

The GeForce 4 Ti series is a good buy if you need top of the line, but those aren't available yet.

As for what Jeff said, it all depends on how valuable FPS are to you.  Some people can play a game at 20fps and not notice the difference, and some people won't settle for anything under 60.

I'd definatly wait on the GeForce 4, seconding what xbomb said about Direct X support.  Heck, I got a GeForce 3 in my P4 1.7 GHz and it hasn't hiccuped once.  Runs all my stuff just fine.  Only real reason for GeForce 4 is if ya need to obtain about 50 more benchmarks in 3D Mark 2001.

"Full" DX 8.1 might involve some hardware features that few (if any) games actually support. That's not a reason to blow off the card. Furthermore, it doesn't even matter in this case, since NoLimits uses OpenGL to render!

It might not matter when you are playing NL, but why blow off a valueable feature because one game doesn't require it?

Unless you upgrade your card every year or so, in the long run, you will be upset that you paid a lot of money for a video card that doesn't have features that future (and some current games) require.

But that's just it... you'll pay $200 or more less for buying the card that's six months behind. Given that games often follow one year development cycle, you're still ahead of the curve.

eh, I'll keep my PS2 for the cool graphics games. Seriously, spending 300 dollars a year for a new CARD for your computer is completely wasteful. How could anybody be so spoiled to get an entirely new card because the framerate isn't PERFECT? That is absolutely ridiculous. I'd much rather spend 300 bucks on a trip somewhere. Oh, weren't you going to get an XBox Jeff? How is it?

I have an X-Box and a Gamecube. Consoles are a different beast because the resolution on NTSC TV sucks in the first place, and there's little point in going beyond 29.97 fps since that's all the TV can display anyway.

And I do agree, it is wasteful to buy the greatest card ever six months. I tend to replace mine about once every two years. Works for me.
