Jazzland rebranded as Six Flags New Orleans

Posted | Contributed by BrandonR

Six Flags announced yesterday that Jazzland, a recent acquisition, would be rebranded as Six Flags New Orleans. Initial improvements include a new Batman: The Ride (B&M inverter purchased from a Japanese park), a smaller coaster and other improvements and themes throughout the park.

Read the press release from Six Flags.

The name Jazzland had a bad reputation with locals, they'll probably get a surge of curious visitors by giving the park a totally new name.

Then Six Flags will get a bad reputation with locals too, probably...

Huge article in the local paper can be found here
http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/frontpage/index.ssf?/newsstory/jazzland15.html.
It tells you what the names of the other rides are and what these rides are and confirms The Jester as the other coaster. *** This post was edited by SFZIP on 11/15/2002. ***

ErinGoBraugh made the best point. Six Flags SHOULD fix what they've got before continuing to expand but the reality is that they got Jazzland for less than the cost of a Boomerang so even if it doesn't work out they aren't going to be hurt by it.

Well, you know just as well as I do that AstroWorld used to count on New Orleans as a draw to the park.. so when New Orleans people think of Six Flags, I'm willing to bet they think of "Six Flags AstroWorld", so therefore, Six Flags won't have to make Jazzland any *better* than the quality of AstroWorld, so thats not painting a very pretty picture for the future of Six Flags New Orleans.

I can't help but think that what Six Flags is adding to the park this year is more than was added to Pontchartrain Beach in the 12 years that I lived in New Orleans. That should make locals feel pretty good.

Now SF needs to convince the locals that the park is a place for locals, not just tourists. This is very important in the New Orleans psychology where locals would rather die than be seen in a "tourist trap".

Batwing Fan SFA, you're confused again.

Six Flags does not rely on the smaller parks to fund the larger ones. On the contrary (as I've stated many times), the "big four" are responsible for 1/3 of the chain's total income. I think those parks can easily finance their new attractions on their own. Throw in a few more (SFoG, SFFT, SFStL) and you've got 1/2 the income for the chain. It's *not* the smaller parks supporting the larger parks; rather, it's the larger parks supporting the smaller.

As for SFNO, it was stated that the additions this year were supposed to occur over several years instead. What the park becomes depends on what happens this year attendance-wise. I wouldn't count out the possibiliy of seeing a new coaster within the next few years, however, as I'm sure Six Flags will be attempting to heavily market SFNO for awhile.

Six Flags Revenue Sharing! Baseball, eat your heart out!

If I lived in New Orleans, I would probably be happy Six Flags bought the park and is introducing "new to New Orleans" rides. They won't care that their Batman is used, and most will never know.

I don't know if the area is already saturated in regards to waterparks, but if not, SF would be wise to consider a Hurricane Harbor or similar addition.

Yeah, but moving Jokers Revenge from Fiesta Texas to New Orleans will only result in a greater number of people hating the ride.

It's nice to read that they're adding trees and air conditioned buildings, as that was the major complaint of visitors according to the article. This is yet another park with a Frisbee. I just might have to visit one of these years.

PM, did you visit Astroworld this year? We saw a lot of painting going on in our two-day stay. I think you've got a major chip on your shoulder about a park that isn't that bad.

Dude, you're getting an Intamin!

Did Panther Modern visit Astroworld this year...?

bwa-hahahaha!

It's Louisiana...

I'm kind of disappointed with the name (nothing big though). It focuses too much on New Orleans rather than the whole state.

Six Flags Not Operating, I love it.................
Yea, I know what you mean, Shy One. I thought they'd just rebrand it as Six Flags Jazzland... but obviously they do not think like me. Same case with Geauga Lake.
Notice that once we found out about this, we automaticly started to use SFNO-we're so silly! lol

In answer to Jim Fisher, SFNO is already better than Astroworld - at least they already have a Beemer. =) (albeit a used one)

Regardless, as much as I dislike the corporate policies of Six Flags, this is better than watching another CCI go the way of Rampage at Visionland. I would have preferred something along the lines of Six Flags: Jazzland though - Six Flags: New Orleans just doesn't have the same ring.

I also can't believe that none of the buildings at the old Jazzland had A/C. No wonder the locals didn't want to go! Also, I wonder if SF will add some superhero or Looney Tunes theming? Although it's generic for a SF park, it's better than a half-baked New Orleans themed park right next to the real thing! Who's idea was that, anyways...

Well, with all that said, I'll still probably check it out next time I go to N'awlins. And hey, at least i can get in free with my season pass now. =)

Well, you know what I say to that, bring it on! If Six Flags want to add that ride to the list, the more, the merrier! I am sure that the coaster will find some new fans in NOLA. Will everyone like it, probably not, but will some like it, no doubt about it! Just like Drachenfire had it's legion of fans, Jester will have it's also. If you go back and read the transcripts from the press conference, you'll notice that the relationship between Six Flags and the city is a very good one already. In fact, Mr. story felt compelled to make that obvious. Makes you wonder about their relationship in other nearby markets, huh? Houston(cough, cough,)Houston.

Mr. Story made a comment about the permits and certain assurances, hinting that the city will be a lot more easy going than other markets. What do you make of that? I'll tell you what I make of it. The writing is on the wall for SFAW. The other markets that he's reffering to, I don't know about. The city of Houston has apparently, alienated Six Flags Inc. Something happened there that has not been made public. The reason that I make this assumption is because of the unoffical website for Astroworld and the people there like Panther Modern, Fierce Pancake, and others. Mr. Story sounds a little bitter towards the city IMHO.

Maybe you guys need to find out what your elected officals are doing to shackle Astroworld. Stop blaming Six Flags for your park's neglect and get on your legislator's collective butts to support Six Flags and re-locate the park! It is direct conflict with the Texans. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out! The people of Houston that care about Astroworld, need to be heard in the city council, period. Stop blaming the rest of the world for your park's neglect and help out. Don't blame New Orleans, if in few years, SFNO gets it's first Hyper and Astroworld is still neglected. *** This post was edited by Backseat Lee on 11/16/2002. ***

Backseat: Drachen Fire never had a legion of fans. Those wo so strongly regretted its passing were almost exclusively people who had never ridden the torture device.

nelson324: I think you are confusing me with Panther Modern. I didn't refer to SFAW at all.

Oh, contrare, contrare, the people that I've taked to, that knows how to ride rollercoasters, knew where the torture spots where on the ride and prepared themeselves for each of the episodes on the ride. See, I used to work at BGW my first year here in Va. Beach. I was in security there and worked with a few people that rode the ride. They had grown accostumed to the ride and became experts on how to ride it. We used to go and look at it before and after work and admire the layout.

My boss was one of the fans that I am reffering to. He told me that a lot of people that complained, were women and younger kids. Most of the ACER's and other coaster fans knew where to brace themselves and got used to the ride. I never had the chance to ride it becaused when I came to Va. Beach, I applied for a weekend job at BGW in security, got the job in 2000, but the coaster closed in 98' or 99'. He and other ACER's that I met at the park told me that I missed a unique and "learned enjoyable", ride. Really, the only people that complained were wusses anyway!

The first time that I saw Drachenfire was when Alex Winter (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure) did a documentary at BGW for the "E" channel on cable tv back in 94'. I remember him saying after the ride, "I'll be moving on to another section of the park right after I get vertabre checked out!" Like the ACER said, "Only wusses complained." I literally met 100's of people that said the ride was great once you got used to it! *** This post was edited by Backseat Lee on 11/16/2002. ***
