Listen, I like Crest better than Colgate, but I'm not going to just make wild, baseless asumptions about Colgate as a company, or say that the guy who runs Colgate is tool for whatever reason. Or even say that Colgate wishes they could make toothpaste as good as Crest does but doesn't have the ability. Silliness.
Its fine dude. Subjective opinion. *** Edited 4/28/2006 12:08:43 AM UTC by matt.***
If it wasn't for Phoenix and Twister I don't think we would've known much about the park same as Raven and Legend have done for Holiday World.
Other than that, Knoebel's has its own niche and it obviously seems to work very well for them.
X Factor
Semi-on topic ... Gonch you stole my damn thunder! I was having a discussion with SpecialEd today that I was going to bring here about my not getting any of the excitement over the flying turns. You guys do realize that the Flying Turns is the exact same coaster type as the much-maligned Disaster Transport, just with a wooden trough, right? Not only do I not understand why a park owner would go through the expense of creating something that was outdated 15 - 20 years ago, I don't understand why it's getting just as much buzz as say, Voyage? Just ... can anyone explain the attraction beyond nostalgia? Or better than that, the business sense behind it?
The original Flying Turns would build up speed and not slow down climbing higher and higher up the sides with each descending turn. The pacing increased until it felt like it was way out of control. That's the thrill I remeber hearing from family and friends who rode Euclid Beach's 'Turns. Dick liked the ride in Cleveland when he rode it years ago. That is why he wants to build one now. Heck, I give the man a whole lot of credit to do stuff in the face of all the nay sayers
That's not to say I wouldn't have fun visiting Knoebels at some other time of the year. The Phoenix is an excellent coaster (Twister is "just okay", IMO). The Haunted Mansion is great. There are a lot of little fun things about Knoebels. But something about the park just doesn't do it for me and, like Lord Gonchar, I'm not really able to identify what it is. It's not that I don't like small parks, as Indiana Beach and Lake Compounce are among my favorite parks in the country. It might be the "campground with rides" thing. Knoebels has a nice setting among all the hills, but the park itself is not what I would call "nice." Maybe gravel paths and dirt just aren't my thing.
I'll probably end up back at Knoebles at some point in the future, whether for PPP or because I happen to be in the area. It's never something I'd travel far out of the way for, and it's not somewhere I'd take someone who would want to experience the "best" parks in the country.
I appreciate the classic aspects of the park, and I'm glad Knoebels has kept those elements in their business plan because it does make the park unique. I still don't get this "magic" or "charm" that people talk about, though. I suppose it could be equated to taking a vacation camping or taking a vacation to a fancy resort. Knoebels is like camping, and maybe that's just not the thing for some people (although I do like camping, so maybe that destroys my case :) ). Still, it's certainly not boring, and I personally feel that any park that has constructed a building in the shape of a loaf of bread needs to be visited at least once.

Ooooh, now you've gone and done it. You'll have the whole wooden coaster fan club after you now...trust me. ;)

And lose money?
Please show us where Knoebels is losing money. (If they were how could they build a new coaster)
How do you not know that Knoebels is not more profitable than Kennywood? I would assume most people know this, but for some who may not: Income does not necessarily equal profit. Look at Six Flage...tons of income and billions in debt.
In addition, if Dick Knoebel made a comment about "being in the front" he was likely referring to something like wood coaster preservation which they obviously are! He certainly wouldn't have meant the theme park industry or whatever

I like Knoebels and I have issues? Let's examine some evidence about Coaster Reimer:
First post to CoasterBuzz, yesterday at 3:06:28 PM in this thread:
"Knoebels is a snoozefest."
Then, probably because no one took the bait he started this thread one day later. Coaster Reimer has not participated in ANY OTHER active threads. So far all this person has done is bash Knoebels.
I smell a troll.
Of course I would gladly welcome a real, rational debate instead!
edit: Scary thought....I hope this isn't fatmanonacouch again and we don't have another CPnut situation ;) *** Edited 4/28/2006 1:43:15 AM UTC by Peabody***
Also, funny you mention that peabody I was actually having the same thoughts lol. I mean, really, I still think these people are jokes to get people to understand being selective about members is a good thing, it all started after I posted that was a bad thing. I get it now already LOL *** Edited 4/28/2006 1:45:12 AM UTC by P18***
My only real *regret* about that day is that I failed to play Fascination...
What sucks about a park that you can go to and spend under $10 for four hours of fun? Given there may not be a top ten coaster or just a single steel kiddie coaster to be seen, you can still have fun trying to catch the brass ring on the Carousel, screaming in the tunnel on the Pioneere Train, knocking the crap out of people on the Skooters, and trying to hit the trees on the Flyers all make for a fun evening if you ask me!
