Intamin Double/Triple Wheels

The only one I've ever ridden is the one at HP....I think it's a really cool concept (and I prefer the *enclosed nature* given my reasonable fear of heights)...;)

bill, looking forward to one of the scary-looking rides (they were Vekoma towers, right?)...that we discussed a while back...

Wow, I too did not know about the Galaxy at Magic Mountain...from what another site says, it closed in 1979 apparently.

Interesting looking at those pics.....seems they changed the cabins and/or painted the ride during it's 8 year life out there in California.

From those pics, it seems that that design would be even higher maintenance than the "typical" two (or even three) wheel designs. This might be why it only lasted as long as it did...I don't know.

I'm sure our pal Steven knows a bit about Galaxy...and he may be able to shed some light as to why the Far East seems to be able to keep this beasts running while the U.S. has simply given up (less ONE exception that is!)

Those types of ferris wheels are junk. I always hated those rediculous contraptions.

You know why most parks got rid of them? Because they took them apart and cashed them in at the junk yard before their values went down to nothing.

Junk?

I would kill to have one near me again. The triples are a work of pure engineering art.

JkPark, How could you call these works of art junk? Sure they may not go 100mph or have lots of loops but they are classic family rides.

It just takes away from the George Ferris' original idea. The Ferris Wheel, not Ferris Wheels.

Speaking from the Hersheypark viewpoint, I don't really understand why the other parks scrapped theirs. Although I'm not familiar with the triples, maintenance on the doubles is not all that demanding. Hershey had to do some work on the pivot bearing a few years ago, but really (knock on wood) it is a trouble-free ride, with very few breakdown calls. Of course, the cars and swivels are completely disassembled and rebuilt over the winter, and it gets an oil change in the spring, but other than that, very little maintenance is required. It is a very simple ride that has proven it's worth in the millions of guests entertained in the past 30 years.
Yah, take it easy jkpark...no need to jump into every thread spewing your nasty thoughts. Seems quite a few threads lately you step in with wonderful comments like "they're junk" or "tear it down" or "Six Flags usually has a majority of it's rides not working" or just playing moderator. This forums (for the most part) stay civil until silly and useless comments start filling up the threads.

ANYWAYS, moving on...for those reading thru this topic and want to see a GREAT pic of Sky Whirl (from good ole Steven), take a gander here...

(Notice the lack of trees AND Turn of the Century in the background!)

Thanks, MrSkyWhirl, for plugging my Sky Whirl photo there! Therefore, I was moved to scan another Sky Whirl photo:

This shot illustrates how the massive ride occupied a very compact site.

Regarding the Magic Mountain Galaxy, unfortunately, I never rode it. The spot it occupied is still there, across from the entrance to GOLIATH. Those who I've spoken to who have ridden say that it was a great ride. I'm sure it must have been.
