This is becoming a more common practice to keep people from leaching images off of somebody else's server.

Just hoping that my firewall actually works. I'd hate for some hacker to set my computer on fire.

But perhaps the most ridiculous notion that Symantec is making here is that blocking referrers protects your privacy. Does anyone actually care that the site you're visiting might know that a computer on the IP you're using came from Google or some other link? Not unless you're a super-paranoid uber-dork.

Not sure which one actually changes the referrer settings since nothing actually states that it does, but I don't think Jeff is hell-bent on taking over your computer, so you'll be safe! :)

I agree with Jeff. All these blaster worms and all this other crap meant for the good-ole Microsoft products are easily blocked by using a simple router. This will block all requests that you didn't specifically ask for from getting into your "network."
There also is another feature for those on dial-up or for those that do not want to get a router. In Windows XP, you can enable the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). This basically will do the same thing as the router; it blocks all requests you didn't ask for. You can get there by going to Control Panel then to Dial Up and Network Connections. Right-Click your connection and hit Properties. I believe you then click the Advanced tab at the top and then click the button to enable the ICF.
You don't need Norton or McAfee after that point, and it will help to ensure your computer runs faster.
You still need a virus program; that is for sure. But, the other firewall stuff is extra crap that bogs down your system to slow it down.
I also agree with Jeff about that whole privacy thing. Who cares how you found the website in the first place? It just helps the website owner in a way create better marketing or advertising. The leeching of pictures is getting pretty bad anymore because of the limited space available to "free" website companies.
I thought that you disabled all the images for the non members jeff!

And the best part of this entire thread is kpjb's comment about hackers setting his computer on fire! Priceless! *** Edited 7/16/2004 1:51:25 PM UTC by Impulse-ive***
