Image viewing problem

This has probably been addressed before, but I've been away for a while, so please forgive me. Ever since the new site has been up, I have not been able to view any of the coaster/park photos on the site. It always gives me a grey box that says "this image may only be viewed from coasterbuzz.com". I'm a little puzzled by this, as it never happened before. Could ya help me?

I have the same problem, I have to disable my Norton Anti Virus to view the photos. Is there anyway you can fix this Jeff so I don't have to disable Norton each time?

I believe the reason you are having this problem is because Norton Anti-Virus strips the referrer off of the image link. No referal from Coasterbuzz = no image to be viewed.

This is becoming a more common practice to keep people from leaching images off of somebody else's server.

Wow...Duh....and thank you. Don't know why I didn't think about that? Damn Norton.

Check your firewall configuration; you might be able to configure it to let the "referrer" strings go through. Look for a preference pane that talks about privacy settings.

Norton Anti-Virus has nothing to do with it, and frankly you should never turn that off. Norton's security product, as well as others, is where the problem is. As Dave mentions, some of these products strip the referrer from your HTTP requests. That's the setting to look for.

Thats kind of funny since that happens only once in a while for me.

Is it just a Norton thing? I use McAfee Firewall, and I've never had a problem or had to change any settings.

Just hoping that my firewall actually works. I'd hate for some hacker to set my computer on fire.

They probably won't. Those products sell mostly because of fear, uncertainty and doubt, not necessarily because there are real threats. Heck, if you have a broadband connection and one of those cheap little Linksys routers, you've already got all the protection you need.

But perhaps the most ridiculous notion that Symantec is making here is that blocking referrers protects your privacy. Does anyone actually care that the site you're visiting might know that a computer on the IP you're using came from Google or some other link? Not unless you're a super-paranoid uber-dork.

Thanks again. I don't know about the "referrer" thingy, but I just disabled the browser privacy on my privacy control, and that seems to have corrected the problem.

I'm having the same image viewing problem. I have Norton Internet Security and was not able to find the right setting or whatever to change it. Is there another way around this?

-Look past the flesh...and see your enemy-
In the main Norton Internet Security window, click the "options" button (upper-right corner) and select Norton Internet Security. In the window that pops up, select the Web Content tab. Down toward the bottom is a button labeled "add site." Click it and type in www.coasterbuzz.com, then select "permit" for each of the options on the right side.

Not sure which one actually changes the referrer settings since nothing actually states that it does, but I don't think Jeff is hell-bent on taking over your computer, so you'll be safe! :)

There was no Web Content tab. Do you have NIS2004?

-Look past the flesh...and see your enemy-
No, I have the '03 version. There should be something similar with a listing of web sites that you can add to. I might suggest visiting their website if you still can't find it.

Yep,

I agree with Jeff. All these blaster worms and all this other crap meant for the good-ole Microsoft products are easily blocked by using a simple router. This will block all requests that you didn't specifically ask for from getting into your "network."

There also is another feature for those on dial-up or for those that do not want to get a router. In Windows XP, you can enable the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). This basically will do the same thing as the router; it blocks all requests you didn't ask for. You can get there by going to Control Panel then to Dial Up and Network Connections. Right-Click your connection and hit Properties. I believe you then click the Advanced tab at the top and then click the button to enable the ICF.

You don't need Norton or McAfee after that point, and it will help to ensure your computer runs faster.

You still need a virus program; that is for sure. But, the other firewall stuff is extra crap that bogs down your system to slow it down.

I also agree with Jeff about that whole privacy thing. Who cares how you found the website in the first place? It just helps the website owner in a way create better marketing or advertising. The leeching of pictures is getting pretty bad anymore because of the limited space available to "free" website companies.

Jimmybob, thank you sir. The problem has been corrected.

So what do I disable in Norton?

I thought that you disabled all the images for the non members jeff!

I get that error occasionally too, although (this one really will rack your brain) I get the "Image can only be viewed from Coasterbuzz" on non-roller coaster sites sometimes! I don't know if my cache is just referring to the wrong image or what's going on, but if I've been on the buzz for 10-15 minutes (this only happens on my home computer) and then I go look at another site, I'll get that problem. One refresh usually takes care of business, but it still freaks me out that Jeff is trying to block me from viewing images on non-coaster related sites ;) Anyone else ever have this problem? Never happens on "corporate" sites, just other people's personal and semi-personal pages. Oh just thought I should mention, I never use any kind of anti-virus.

And the best part of this entire thread is kpjb's comment about hackers setting his computer on fire! Priceless! *** Edited 7/16/2004 1:51:25 PM UTC by Impulse-ive***

I don't have a router, and I tried screwing with some stuff, but its not working...

Mister Fobe, I went to www.symantec.com and did a search on "referrer". One of the results that came up addressed the exact thing I was looking for. It'll tell you to double click on Privacy Control and go on to tell you where to add this site. It corrected the problem for me.
