Idora Park Tail Gate

The next time your in Youngstown, pay a visit to the Historical Center of Industry and Labor.

I'm not saying we don't have nice things in Youngstown. Just take a look at Mill Creek Park, it's beautiful, and a few years ago was voted one of the nicest parks in the country. All I'm saying is we have to quit living in the past if were going to survive in the future. Back in 1987 I wrote an article for the Jambar (YSU's newspaper) about Corby, England, a town that was a mirror image of Youngstown, and they said the first thing we need to do is tear down the steel mills, because as long as they stand, we will always think they will be used again. Tell me that you have never heard, to this day, that the steel mills will spring back. It won't happen, and I'm not being pessimistic, it's just that foreign steel is cheaper. Personally, about ten years ago I thought that they should tear down the steel mills and put a park there. There's great access from I-80 and I-680. But the chances of that happening are highly unlikely. I don't know if it's strictly a Youngstown thing, but we tend to hang on to things forever. The Industry & Labor museum is an example. It's nice we have it, but we're celebrating an industry that is dying out in our valley.

Getting back to the subject of the post, I donated quite a bit of signage to the "Back to Idora" event that was out in Brookfield a few year's ago, but I don't know how good an idea sitting in a parking lot on a "not so good" side of town is, looking at a plot of land that has no remnants of the park on it. I think it would be kind of depressing. I think you'd be better off renting out a room and having some kind of memorabilia show. Again, just my take on things. God love you guys for even attempting this.

I sure do miss the Idora Wildcat & Jackrabbit.

When I said parking lot, I mean the Old Mill overflow parking lot. This isn't a "Bash Youngstown,Ohio" thread.
All I wanted to do was to inform anyone that may be interested in attending.

Traficant fan here. Not your typical congressman who is all groomed and politically correct. Unique character.

Did you how his toupee was used by PKI last October as a scary prop for their annual Halloweeen event?! lol

The only place I like less in Ohio than Youngstown is Lima.

Ahh, Lima, home of the Quepe (spelling?) burger. Gotta love a burger joint in a small town that has naked baby dolls hanging on the wall cause its their mascot. Kinda sadistic if you ask me.

Why would anyone sit in a parking lot and wish for something that isn't going to happen?

I was very interested in Idora history, but now since everything is torn down i have no interest in visiting a old torn down park.

Your Park only has 1 good coaster! That's too bad!

jkpark,

I haven't made it to PKI. I'm kind of suprised he paid money for that thing. Ironic that his wife is a hairdresser. Another era passes on.

Until November 2004 ;)

I haven't made it to PKI either. My dad said he saw an image of the toupee on a billboard and read about it in the paper. As for November 2004, the "Beam me up!" era has ended. The majority of people in the Mahoning Valley have forgotten about Traficant. It doesn't really matter anymore if you support Traficant or you don't. The man is behind bars for the next 7 years. It's time to move on.

Many of you are asking what good is it to sit in an empty lot. It is more of a social for coaster enthusiasts. The main reason why I'm attending is to meet people that have the same interests: Roller Coasters!

-And one more POSITIVE fact about Youngstown: Where did the coach of the National Champions Ohio State Buckeyes come from??????

TAIL GATE TURNOUT - 5/17/03

Today was a blast! It was great to hear a lot of good stories. We had an excellent turn out, and even a visit from the cast members of "Remember Idora" the musical.

BTW - The musical will be at Powers Auditorium May 23rd, 24th, & 25th.

Youngstown itself may be a dump in some people's eyes but it the surrounding towns are great places to live. I myself live in Poland a good 10 minutes away from Y-Town. I'll be honest, I wouldn't go to Youngstown at night if I can help it, but that doesn't mean its suburbs are bad so I don't appreciate the calling of my hometown a dump. However, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I didnt know there were that many people from the Valley here, I'm pleasantly suprised. :)
I'm glad to hear you guys had fun! And yes, not all of Youngstown is a dump. I've lived here my whole life and Love my neighborhood. It just depends where you go, like in most towns...
Had a great time today! Heard many cool stories about Idora. People may loose things that once made them happy, but the happiness returns when the memories come rushing back! The park may be dead now but just wait... One day it will return like the Pheonix from the ashes. Alot of Youngstown area people care about the park and its grounds. If enough people care the future can be changed and the past can be recreated.

I remember once I got very upset at a post Jeff posted on here about 3 years ago when he called Ytown the armpit of Ohio. It's funny because now when I happen to be in that area I find myself saying it myself. It is true, Ytown does suck.

So for all those of you who are trying to deny that Ytown does suck, wake up and open your eyes. I live in Canfield, a suburb of Ytown, and it is a very nice place, however Ytown is dirty, dangerous and has nothing.

Attitude measures your amplitude. I would NEVER listen to somebody that doesn't even live in this town or area.

You don't have to live there to figure that out. I don't live in Cleveland yet I know it is a town which is going somewhere. It has places to go and things to do. Think about this: What can you do in Youngstown? Get some wedding soup, watch a play and get shot. Fun times abound.

What can you do in Youngstown? I apologize if you weren't informed about the tail gate. There is talk of another party in the future, and hopefully you can attend as well as other coaster enthusiasts from the Mahoning Valley. I really enjoy meeting other coaster fans where I live.

YOUNGSTOWN 2010

I would love to meet other coaster enthusiasts from the Mahoning Valley, but not at a place which would depress me. I like the one idea brought up about renting someplace to display our coaster memorabilia. That would be more fun than seeing a razed coaster with burn marks.
