Idora Park Tail Gate

jkpark's avatar
On Saturday, May 17, from 9AM - 12 NOON, there will be a tail gate party in the parking lot of the defunct Idora Park. Idora was an amusement park in Youngstown, Ohio that closed in 1984 after a horrible fire that damaged the Wildcat roller coaster and other adjacent attractions. For more information, visit: www.idorapark.org

Do you realize that's the day most Coaster Buzz folk will be in Gurnee, IL.

Well, for those who are not going anywhere. As if it were "Plan B." We are trying to get as many people to attend.

Hardly seems like a great neighborhood to do anything. Different strokes I guess.

The Euclid Beach neighborhood isn't exactly the best either.

Please visit the small parks. We don't know what's happening behind the scenes

I agree with Jeff. That part of Youngstown scares me... Of course, most of Youngstown scares me.... I'd go (in the daylight... with a blunt object) but I know that I'll have to work...

What ever happened to the plans to rebuild Idora Park in a new location?

That is one of the major problems that burns me up. There are too many people that are negative about Youngstown. Every community has their problems, no city is perfect. I'm sorry, I don't mean to explode, but this is a great area and has potential to revitalize.

Well, I'm (sort of) from Youngstown, but I have to ask: What are you going to do while you sit in the parking lot? I personally don't like to go back to the old Idora site because it is so depressing.

One of the main objectives is to unite all roller coaster fans in the area together. The tail gate will also feature displays of Idora Park memorabilia.

The only place I like less in Ohio than Youngstown is Lima. Youngstown is a dump. It's unfortunate, sure, but that doesn't make it any less of a dump. Unless it reinvents itself and attracts something new to boost it's economy, it will continue to be a dump.

I live here, in Liberty Township.

Probably won't be at SFGAm...

The only reason that I'm negative about Youngstown is because I've had too many problems in Youngstown. Lighten up.

The insults aren't going to help either Jeff. There are a lot of people that live here that wouldn't appreciate your comments.

So what are they going to do, disagree with me? Who cares? The city is a dump. Its leaders have no clear vision on what to do about it.

Idora is gone, long gone. That sucks, but that's real life. It's not coming back. Few people under the age of 30 even remember it. While I'm all for preserving its memory, I don't know what you expect to accomplish by getting a bunch of people to hang out in a place where clearly you aren't wanted in the first place. There are some nice parks (non-amusement) in Youngstown. Maybe you should concentrate your energies there.

I've lived here 38 years and I agree with Jeff. We've got a "steel mill/General Motors" mentality that's killing this area. It's sports and unions all the way, and people still want to vote for jailed ex-congressman, Jim Trafficant. What company out there would WANT to come to Youngstown? If my wife didn't have so many years in her job at Schwebel's Baking Company, I'd be out of here myself. Even Akron found a way to turn themselves around, and they were in the same predicament as Youngstown. We're the laughing stock of the state.

I miss Idora as much as anyone (just view my signature), after all, I was going there for around 15 years before it shut down. I own park signage, I have videos, but I know it's a lost cause to try to bring it back. Get together and enjoy the memories, or fight for a parkk that still has a chance for survival, like Conneaut Lake Park, it's only an hour away. Idora's gone...let it rest in peace.

Hahahaha... I forgot about Trafficant. He says it all.

And I agree about rebirth of downtown area. Akron, Cleveland, Columbus have done it, and the results have been dramatic. Look at Akron's First Night celebration or the growth and development around UA.

Look at the Short North and arena districts of Columbus. That used to be a dump as well.

The only thing that will get Youngstown out of its dump status is itself.

Even though I strongly disagree with your opinion, I still have respect for it. Just like any other person's views. I'm not going to start an arguement here, but it takes a resident to really understand how things are. The next time your in Youngstown, pay a visit to the Historical Center of Industry and Labor.

Mill Creek is nice.

I like to go running there with a certain four legged furry companion every once in awhile.
