IAAPA 2001: CCI coming to New Mexico, doing more work at Indiana Beach

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

CCI said this morning that they are building an as-of-yet unnamed coaster at Cliff's Amusement Park in New Mexico. The ride will be about 90 feet tall and 2,800 feet long.

They also announced that they're renovating Superstition Mountain at Indiana Beach. The new and improved ride will be largely re-engineered, including new trains.

Coastercraver - Thanks for the Waldameer update.   It doesn't sound very realistic to expect to see Ravine Flyer 2 anytime soon, and that's lame.

I really don't see the logic in the campground owner's argument, as he and the town are shooting themselves in the foot.  Waldameer wants to invest in a potential "world class" ride, which could only generate business for themselves and the rest of Erie.  If anyone has visited Erie lately, you'll quickly reckognize the fact that every business there should be applauding Waldameer's effort to generate interest in the area.

I had also read that the campground owner was concerned about the coaster creating noise and disturbing campers.  Again, I don't see the logic in this argument.   If the coaster goes through and Waldameer stays open, he doesn't lose his customer base and can, in fact, expand on it.  If Waldameer closes, where does this guy think his customers will come from?  Do enough people go camping in Erie that the loss of Waldameer will not affect this campground?

coastercraver - I also read in the local Erie paper about a proposed "swap," in which the state would by 4 acres adjacent to Waldameer, and then trade the park for the land across the street. Since you live in Erie, I was wondering if this proposed swap would include the campground, effectively taking them out of the picture. If this was the case, it may be a solution that would please everyone. Would this then be the plan that would call for a complete redesign of the Ravine Flyer 2 project, or were you referring to a different proposal?

Chris, you are absolutely right!  The logic of the owners of the campground makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Erie's economical problems are getting much deeper with the recent announcement that Internation Paper will be closing down it's mill in the next few months.  We could use increased tourism.  And truthfully, I think that's what this Greenway is going to try to do.  Erie is also in the process of building a convention center and transportation "hub" (tour buses, city buses, taxies, bikes, etc.) as well as improving the city's train station.

As far as the "swapping" of land...no, the state is talking about giving land to Waldameer on the same side of the road- where Waldameer is really located.  This doesn't work that well though, because the land is not flat.  This means that it could not be used in the future for an extension onto the park or for overfill parking as the land Waldameer owns now is used for.  The land swapping would not replace the campground, unfortunately.

I find it funny how they are arguing with the state that the coaster would make the entrance into Presque Isle unpleasant, yet when you drive by their campground, it looks like a junkyard.

Yet another coaster-craving yuppie

New Mexico?  Damnit!  When is Arizona going to get a real freakin park?!?!?!  I've said it before, but really.  It is rediculous how much bigger Phoenix is than Albequerque, and yet all we get is Castles N' Coasters.  (A park smaller than a traveling carnival in a mall parking lot)  Oh well, I shouldn't complain, maybe I can hit up Bill Gates for a $500,000,000 loan to start my own damn park!
Since New Mexico's only park is Cliff's Amusement Park(wich is smaller than your average carnival), you're lucky to have Castles'N'Coasters(which is a traditional park).  At least Castles'N'Coasters has coasters, Cliff's Amusement Park has nothing but the small model Galaxy!
Acrophobia,

If you've ever been on Desert Storm, you'll understand what Koppman is saying. Personally, I'd rather ride a Galaxy.

Koppman,

With the median age in our state being around 100 or so, we're lucky to even have C-n-C.
