Hurricane Ian

Jeff:

You can't just "make the best of it" when gray skies make you clinically depressed. Mental health is not a reflection of character.

If being in the sun takes away all your clinical depression, that's great. Not judging.

I'm simply being a counterpoint that not everyone is miserable living somewhere else that isn't Florida.

Add another Buzzer to the list of us who have been hit by a tornado. I was in a home hit by a tornado when I lived in Indiana. I was only 4...but it happened. In my life I've had a trifecta. Earthquake, tornado and hurricane. Fortunately I've avoided any major fires or floods.

Flooding might be the scariest in my opinion. Flooding at night? No thanks. The thing is that there is typically something you can do in an earthquake (duck into a doorway or under a table), tornado (get away from windows or go to a basement, and hurricane (put up shutters, evacuate with notice). Not much you can do when in flash flooding. The stories of families riding out Ian ON THE ROOF because of rising waters are absolutely harrowing.

I enjoy the Chicago seasons. Nothing beats a crisp fall breeze with some hot cider or mulled wine. I enjoy winter until the middle of February or unless we get a polar vortex. High temperatures in the negatives are brutal. If anything the winter makes spring and summer that much more enjoyable.

I lived in central Florida for work for a bit and was miserable, it just wasn't for me. But glad that it can help those that have SAD challenges.

Currently live up north and thrive in a place with 4 seasons. Excited to be rolling into fall with the smell and look of the leaves turning as well as flannel season. I'm an avid skier so actually look forward to winter.

To each their own.

^Exactly, and compliments on the name. I'm a rare "enthusiast" fan of Le Monster. The corners make it work, it's a Cobb.

I love the season, especially the one we're rolling into. But I get edgy when the days get really short and by mid January, if I'm not taking care of myself (exercise, sun lamp, etc.) I get really bent out of shape. It can last until May sometimes, it catches up with me. Basically, I like the seasons but don't like Jan-March. I prefer to feel my face.

We got the call this afternoon that Orange County schools will remain closed on Monday, because some still don't have power, and others are not yet safe to occupy. Imagine how much worse it is between here and Fort Myers.

If there's one benefit remote learning has had on children, it's that we don't have to worry about them missing out on a day of school because of the weather.

Having to miss a day is not a big deal compared to missing the social development opportunities and especially the services that some kids with special needs require.

You were the kid that reminded the teacher to collect the homework and give the quiz, weren't you?

He's not entirely wrong. Many states require schools to be in attendance 180 days. Any closure, for weather or otherwise, requires schools to add those missed days to the end of the school year. Unless there is some provision in Florida's school code to allow an exemption for weather related closures these aren't days off.

Jeff can likely confirm but I highly doubt these would be remote learning days. If schools don't have power there is probably a significant portion of households that don't either.

Well, today we went to the season opener for the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and I can confirm that a number of them arrived at the arts center early so they could shower. Several of the house staff did the same. So yeah, it's not "over" even this far from the coast.

My in-laws got their power back in Punta Gorda, and while their new construction did well and did not flood, wood structures were largely destroyed.

The dichotomy of being called a fascist troll and also being accused of being a nerd that begged the teacher for homework is hilarious.

I can’t speak for Florida but Texas left no measures in place to go back to remote learning at the flip of a switch. Given that both states have a penchant for trying to out-Florida/out-Texas each other, I’m sure much of Florida is in the same boat. During the intense winter weather events in the last 2 years, Texas waived the make up days when schools were closed and there was no remote learning during the closures.

I guess since we say different things we're not an echo chamber after all.

Orange County is back tomorrow (Tuesday), with the exception of one school. They are predicting bus delays though, because there are a lot of roads still underwater. I saw some of the measured rainfall earlier, and a lot of places got more than their normal annual total in about a day.

You're the sort of person who makes me wonder why CBuzz doesn't have an ignore feature yet.

Ugh, I hate Jira with every fiber of my being and yet 70% of the places I've worked use it.

Back around to the topic of storms and stuff.

Life is just one big cyclical conversation.

Spoke like someone who has really felt the post-storm struggle Gonch. The people saying they are going to stay on Sanibel or want to go back to Ft Myers Beach now really have no good understanding of life without water and electricity is going to be like. And, they are taking a big leap of faith if they are betting they won't be hit by another storm or some other calamity.

I get that they are in shock...but that post-Andrew reality is going to set it.
