I'm guessing the event got pushed back because of the Coaster Con in early June?

Precisely. We wanted to put a month between the events.

No it wasn't, Swoosh. The Howling started as the ACE Fall Con in 1989, and then became The Howling the following year. The last Howling I remember was The Howling '95. There were other events here and there, but there were most definitely more than one Howling. It became an annual fall event for me.

The problem is that no one really wants an event after early june, before late august, or during the peak halloween periods of, say, the first or second weekend of october on. The parks don't want them, because they are already full. We don't want them, because the parks are already full.

For most seasonal parks, that leaves about 8 weekends total for an event. Subtract the infrequent buyout, other special events, etc. It would be near-impossible for everyone to schedule around everyone else.

AV - Was there not one in '98 for Mamba? To be quite honest I had forgotten about the ones prior to that. Accept my appology.

The parks do an *amazing* job of handling coaster events, especially with all the scheduling constraints, and it's really nice if we let them know how much we APPRECIATE all the effort put forth.

Do thank everyone who helps out, from the ride ops to the park reps and other event organizers...

You still have Zoidberg.... You ALL have Zoidberg! (V) (;,,;) (V)

It's ok. The Mamba event in '98 was a spring event. I think they called it something generic like Coaster Celebration. It had been a few years since the last Howling or any other coaster event at the park to my knowledge. But that very event was when I got to ride Mamba nearly trimless, as they only had one train (only second weekend of Mamba being operational) and the block brake was virtually open. Wow, what difference that would later make.

Oh wait wasn't it called Full Moon Madness or something like that?

Oh yeah, I think it was called that, the Mamba event that is. We were actually treated to trimless Timber Wolf that weekend also. Ahh, good times.

AV - Mamba was completely trimless that weekend. It was brakeless for about the first month (mostly weekend operation) of its life. I have not had ANY trimless rides on it since. The drop off the brake was SO much better then as was the rest of the ride and that was when the ride as a whole was slower.

Timber Wolf was still in fine form in 1998 and brakeless as you mentioned for that event and it was flying during the night ERT. (Sigh...) Of course this year (2007), WOF doesn't even include it in the ERT. WHAT?!!! I guess if coaster enthusiasts don't want to ride, that should tell you something. However, the ride was running a lot better the last weekend of the 2006 season. Not sure if it was a fluke or not, but it felt much smoother/better and much closer to how it should feel. There had been a lot of work done in replacing ledgers, etc. during the 2006 season, (though still not a whole lot in actual track replacement) and it had definitely improved since Coaster Mayhem.

Wow. If there is no ERT on Timber Wolf, I wouldn't even consider going to the event. The ride did not get much attention at last year's event though, so I'm not surprised. I practically had a train to myself that night. One of the ride ops even jumped in with me for the last ride, and we talked about the "smooth part" and then both laughed out loud when we got back to the "not smooth part" lol. :)

There was a smooth part on Timberwolf last year? Not when I was there....
Moosh I think it was a reference to the lift hill. ;)

I survived a Japanese typhoon and the Togo flat ride of death!!!!!!
The helix was smooth last year as was the Bobs turn. At the very end of the season it was rideable again, but during most of the summer it beat the hell out of you. It's those darn trains that is the problem.

Back to HWN discussion though...

LOL, the lifthill wasn't even smooth, and I JUST KNEW Moosh would make that comment. :) When I was last there (for Coaster Mayhem), the smooth section was from the top of the first hop through the lifthill structure up until the entrance or maybe first 90 degrees or so of the helix. The shaking would stop for that section and then start right back up again. That's what the ride op and I were laughing about.

Can you imagine going thru Mamba's midcourse brakes knowing that you could be on Voyage ERT at that very moment? I think I would shoot myself.

LOL. What a way to put it into perspective. :)

Well since I honestly did not care for Voyage (*gasp* oh the humanity - how can I dare say something like that) I'm pretty sure that I could )and will) be able to live with myself. Also Mamba is in the morning and Patriot is at night this year, FYI.

Also it is not like I won't be able to do that at Con.

Wow, I would love to go. My friend is flying in from Mexico on Friday the 18th. We are going to Kings Island on Saturday the 19th and Holiday World on Sunday the 20th. So unfortunatley, it looks like I will miss the event by one day:(
