Holiday World to expand in 2003

I got a e mail from regional reps Scott and Carol Holmes regarding Holiday World.

SANTA CLAUS, IN-----For the second week in a row, attendance records at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari have been shattered as a record number of visitors vacationed at the theme park – water park combo. “We’re taking a hard look at what ride or attraction to add for next season,” says Will Koch, the parks’ president. “The key words in our 2003 expansion search are ‘quality’ and ‘capacity.’” Koch says this year’s attendance explosion has caused him to be faced with a new challenge. “In the past, it’s always been ‘build it and they will come,’” he explains. “But for 2003, it’s ‘they’re coming—so build something!’” Overall, seasonal attendance at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari continues to surpass last year’s record season by 21 percent. Saturday, August 10, a record number of 16,222 guests visited the parks, toppling the record set just last Saturday. In addition, the parks set a new weekday record of 11,722 on Friday. And the week of August 5 through 11 surpassed the previous week’s record attendance by 13 percent, as the parks hosted nearly 80,000 visitors. Although Koch has not yet made a decision regarding what to add to Holiday World & Splashin' Safari for the 2003 season, he promises to make a decision and announce the parks’ expansion project in the fall.

Oh, please let it be an interactive dark ride! That would be the icing on the cake...for now!

So many coasters, so little vacation time....

Well RollerFreak I have yet to see a HIGH capacity interactive dark ride so I don't know how likely that is without super-huge cars but that wouldn't be a bad idea but then again it costs a good amount of money to put in a big dark ride and a decorative building and it's an eyesore when you don't spend the money to make the warehouse good looking. I'm sure HW will make a decision that will please as many as possible!

1. S:RoS @ SFNE 2. Yankee Cannonball 3. Cyclone/B:TDK

Paula has already stated that their capacity problems are in the waterpark, so that is where they are looking to add. What hasn't been decided, but she said it would be high capacity and for families.
A high capacity water ride, simply amazing.

SFGAMDie Hard:

Capacity would not be an issue.

The Den of Lost Thieves at Indiana Beach moves 360 people per hour, that's with the 2 seater car. There is an optional 4 seater, which of course, would give you 720 pph.

Now, if you want to compare it to say, the Legend, it moves 550 pph.

Bring on the interactive dark ride!

OK, how about a water coaster! (AKA Roller Soaker)

Oh, and if they do add one, let us name it. I still have all of my names for the name that coaster contest for Hershey's coaster!

They should add a couple flat rides.

#1 Steel-Nitro
#1 Wood-Shivering Timbers

From what I've heard the roller soaker is a waste of time. I haven't ridden it yet, but it doesn't look too exciting other than the water part.

Yes I'm 15, no I'm not childish, I'm not being sarcastic, well maybe I do have somewhat of an ego...

Actually, flats would be good. They could add a couple of interesting Huss rides, or maybe a Chaos from Chance.

RollerFreak, is that one or two train capacity on Legend? If it were two, that would be highly incorrect. Why, you ask? Being the math major that I am, I can't see the figures....oh look, there they are.....

One train, 2 minute track time, 1 minute refill, give or take some minutes is about 400-480. I would be unhappy as management to only have 15 trains go out per hour....which adds up to 360 passangers. With 20 = 480. Putting the other train on the track increases it dramatically to around 650-700 riders per hour, which almost doubles Den of Lost Thieves.

Secondly, and more importantly, I was fortunate to visit 14 parks this season. The "dark" rides that you desire had a popularity of around 30%, the exceptions being the Den and Noah's Ark, which really isn't a "ride" at all, moreso a 'walk thru'. (not taking anything away from the Ark, because it IS incredible).

Overall, a dark ride would become dull to the GP in time and not be the "capacity" solution for what Mr. Koch is in need for 2003.

In all respects, HW will do it right and I'll be making a trip back next summer with a new coaster, drop machine, carrousel, water slide...whatever, but I highly doubt I will be sitting on a brand, spanking new.....dark ride?!?!?!

First off never judge something you that you have not tried. You could be missing out.

Second, Roller Soaker in not meant to be thrilling. It's a family type interactive water ride. It, to me, looks like a blast! (Pun intended)

Coasterpunk told me it's a fun ride.....expect to get soaked, but it's a good addition to their park.

First off your math is crap. Even if the Legend produces 700 pph ( it does not according to RCDB.com) how is this more than 720 pph!?!?

I also disagree with dark rides not drawing people. Even on a slow day a SFSL and IB, wait time for both of their dark rides were 25 minutes.

Edit: BTW where did you come up with this 30%? Sounds like more crap.

You do get soaked Woody. Maybe HW will get an interactive dark ride/ water coaster. You would shoot water at the monsters! It could be called the Ghoster Soaker!

So, the almighty calculator is crap? Well, did you read the part about being 'almost' doubling 360 pph, which would be what? eh....700, right? And when would you want to ride the Den with 4 people in the car? The reason for the Loooonggg waits on Dark rides is that capacity is ridiculous in the first place.

You're absolutely right, RFreak, build an interactive dark ride in HW. Hey, I'm fine with that.....but I'm not so sure that in 3 years the GP will be fond of the notion (or Mr. Koch for that matter). The Raven & Legend will be 9 and 3 years old respectively next season. Zoombabwe 2 years aged. In 5 years, ALL three will still own maximum capacity in HW, where 'you're' dark ride will already heading south in that respect.

Is this a team game, or are we golfing or wrestling?

When would I want to ride the den with 4 people in the car?!?!? Ummm. When it's a 4 seater maybe?!?! Did you read that part?

Loooooong waits? You call 25 minutes long? You haven't been to CP during July or August have you?

Edit: BTW, how does a ride lose its capacity over time? Intriguing!

I think that a Roller Soaker would be the perfect addition for HW. It's a family ride, great for the waterpark, and they can boast another roller coaster...sounds like a great idea.
