Hey Arrow! Nice job on the Olympic cauldron!

For those of you that didn't know, Arrow was in charge of engineering the Olympic cauldron. It looks like a pretty wacked out design, but cool none the less.
Did Arrow design the cauldron, or did they just build it?

They engineered and manufactured it while another company designed it.

Here's the little tidbit of info in the news section a while back:

Arrow Dynamics was chosen for the engineering and manufacturing of the Olympic cauldron for the winter games this year in Salt Lake City. While the design and look was established by another firm, the engineering and manufacturing took Arrow 18 months to complete.

According to the post in the news section, while another firm did the design, Arrow took 18 months to engineer and manufacture the cauldron.  I agree that it is beautiful.  Nice job.
Edit:  Great minds think alike.  Your post beat me by about 30 seconds!  :-)

What I wanna know is..how did they get the flame up there? I saw it like spiraling up...but how?

I'm pretty sure that there was some kind of elevator contraption that carried the flame up through the middle of the structure.

The torches are run by gas, correct? If they are, then the top was lite with a pilot light somewhere, but I don't know where it is. From there, the flame would travel up it to the vents at the top.

Probabaly by turning on and off gas jets placed along the tower.  A couple of times I had almost figured it went out.
Chuck, who likes the cauldron but the gas jets are clearly visable in the glass cauldron.

I was just praying that it wouldn't blow out like it did on that one Superman movie.  :)

wow that was a fast response time.  Another question I have, is when I was watching the ceremony live, it has like liquid pooring into the flame...was it gas..or water?

Yeah, I was going to comment on that liquid too. It didn't look the the liquid was on fire, so maybe it's some kind of coolant to protect the glass...

The flame "moved" most likely by a series of gas valves that were turned on and off in squence, so the flame made its way up the tower. When a gas jet at the top of the flame was lit, the lowest one went off, and so on, until it got to the top.

It did appear that there were water jets at the top, presumably there to cool the metal around the flame.

I believe the cascading water jets are some sort of a fountain or waterfall built on the outside of the cauldron's top piece. Whatever it is, it looks cool. The next time I talk to my Arrow rep, I need to commend them on a wonderful job.

Indeed it's pretty cool.  All that's missing is a fish-hook on the side.
The waterwas to keep the glass from exploding from the heat.  It is like 15 degrees over there and that is the high!
Well someone beat me to it! Just another fine example of Arrow's diversity. Now can I trust all of you to refrain from any "rough" remarks? :)

The Olympic Cauldron was Designed by a Student at the University of Utah, and yes, it is water running on the out side. The water is mainly for effect, and it's only real purpose is to cascade down the glass on the out side of the cauldron, to accent the flame. The flame made it's way up to the top of the cauldron along the outside glass, there were no gas jets used. It's supposed to be mysterious, the flame climbing the Cauldron, that's the way the SLOC wanted it, a "How'd they do that?" of sorts, and that's where I'll leave it.
