Help me identify this defunct coaster

This has been a very interesting topic. As for the ride, APaficionado is 100% correct. This link will cleary show where it is from. It's amazing looking at these old photos. It's also sad.
Wow, you got it APacicionado...good work. I managed to find this photo album:

It has one more shot of 'the Jet' and some more shots of the park itself.

We should def. do this once a month or so...

beat ya to it slowmotion lol

;)

DAMN YOU RT!! ;)

I do have to say, those photos are pretty good for being taken in the late 60's. The round edges totally make sense now too, as those old photo's had them.

Hey AP? You have a book on that park specifically, or just a rollercoaster book with that park in it? What book is it?

Those are some cool pictures you found of Olympic Park! I've only seen the pictures in the book, and the quality isn't nearly as good as those. It's hard to believe those were taken in 1967, that person must have had a really nice camera! I guess all those years of studying defunct amusement parks pays off...
It's looks similar to a coaster I saw on RCDB when I was looking through Canada about 6 months ago. Can't be sure. I know it didn't take long to go through the Canadian parks since most are single coaster parks.

I, for one, can't wait for the Italian Job to open...looks awesome to me!

The coaster is the "Jet" from Olympic Park in Irvington, NJ.

You know, that truthfully was the first guess I emailed back to my friend who sent me this photo. But when I compared it to the photos in the book, I just couldn't see the resemblence. The book didn't have very many good photos of that ride anyway and I was assuming the fan turn was the first turn after the lift. It obviously is not though. APaficionado, are a genious for finding the photos source. Thanks!!

Slowmotion, the book is called "Smile: A Picture History of Olympic Park 1887-1965" by Alan A. Siegel and is currently on Amazon.com for $16.10. I had bought the book prob. 7 or 8 years ago from Guntherhall.com, a great site for amusement park books. By the way, you were correct about the picture HarryTraver, that is the first turn you are seeing, as the second turn is relatively flat and was over the station.
Those are some very interesting pics... not to mention beautiful ones. I agree- that must have been one hell of a camera to take shots like that 35 years ago!

Its a shame to see them, though, because its another reminder of the long list of lost NJ parks- the same list that includes Palisades, Bertrand's Island and a host of amusement piers along the Jersey shore.

Being born 11 years after those pics were taken, I obviously never made it to Olympic, but I know many who did. The coaster was supposed to be terrifying- I remember more than one person telling me that it was a great ride (or an awful one, depending on their point of view), perhaps even better than the fabled Palisades Cyclone (the later version, not the Traver ride). My mother told me that when she was little, her friends talked her into riding and it scared the living crap out of her- it was years before I finally got her on another wooden coaster (the Sky Princess). Because of that ride, she is still NOT an enthusiast!

Apaficionado you better tell Harry you want a cut of whatever he won! HAHA!! :>) Good work and way to stick together and solve the problem.

Thanks,
DMC

Great work guys we should really suggest that we have at least one "find the defunct coaster" a month during the off season.

It brings life to a otherwise boring off season.

Your Park only has 1 good coaster! That's too bad!
DArien want to me email Jeff?

Thanks,
DMC

Thanks Crashmando doing that right now.

May I proudly state that I did a lot of guessing and got all four? (you can check the bottom of the list). After playing Mr. Hooley's "games" for years, I finally did well enough to get mentioned on the site!
