Hands up or down?

I was a firm believer in the "Always Hands up" philosophy. Lately, however, i have been lazy and riding Hands down.

I have now found that some coasters do not Bang a person around so much if they use the handles. In fact, some rides become much more enjoyable when holding on.

This is exactly the way I feel about riding coasters. I have been one some mean woodies where I can't hold my arms up the whole way on because of high lateral G Forces. Like on Twisted Twins, Villan, and the TX Giant.

Whoa I'm the 88984594th Vistor to Coasterbuzz. I wonder what I have won.

I just don't know what the big deal is about holding your hands up and screaming like a bloody idiot throughout the entire ride. I mean, can't you just sit back and enjoy the ride with your hands down and inside the car like you are told to do? I've ridden with other coaster enthusiasts on certain coasters and have been whacked in the temple, jaw, forehead, etc because they just HAVE to hold their hands up. Why? Why? Why?

If more "enthusiasts" followed rules, I tend to think we'd have many less Gerstlauer haters, that's just me though...

[Not directing this post at anyone in particular, but...]

UP!!! RobCoasting...I'm usually very emotionless while I'm on a ride. I just have a big smile and I have my hands up the whole time. I noticed it doesn't help if I make an ass out of myself. But it does help make the ride better if i have my hands up (atleast on a ride with a lap bar, with a harness it's hands out in front of you, lol.)
It's funner to put the hands up, if you ride with the hands down you don't get thrown around alot, that's the point of woodies.

Don't tell PKD, but I just had to ride hands-up on H:XLC....;).....kiddie coasters can really beat you up sometimes if you don't brace yourself (no padding)....

Um, I rode hands up everytime I rode Hsxlc last year :)

Put your hands out during Volcano and it's awesome too. Great floating air there. Hypersonic has great ejector air. I loved those 2 coasters.

now I like hands up with a nice loose restraint (only on selected rides. Ride with a nice loose restraint on Magnum and you butt will get brused from floating out of your seat and slaming back down into it! It only doesn't work on the rough black train.

If you're riding by yourself, then you have the option to do both.

But damnit if you are riding with somebody, do them a favor and leave them down because you will sooner or later elbow them in the face or head and that isn't fun (happened to me before).

It's fun to put your hands up on Xcelerator's launch. Makes it feel twices as fast. The ride ops will go nuts though, But if they jokingly allow an off duty ride op to do it, they won't get mad at you.

Uh, no because part of the reason that I ride roller coasters is because they're a realease, a break from everyday life. It's a reason to scream like an idiot and get out anger, stress, etc. If I'm just sitting there why not just put down the windows and drive 70 mph on the highway? It stays at high speeds faster, you get the same wind in your face and you can get music to boot (and its a heck of a lot cheaper). I ride coasters because I can put my hands up, scream my head off and have a reason to do it. And if the "rules" were really what you had to follow and not just leagl mumbo-jumbo so that people can't sue I would think there would be a lot more preventing you from putting your hands up. B&M and Intamin etc. have to design for the possibility that the entire train will have their hands up. If they didn't, there would be a lot more injuries.

What do you want them to do to prevent people putting their hand up, handcuff you to the train?

In some states it is a felony to not follow instructions by either the ride operator or written instructions. See Ohio's rider responsibility law.

And how many times do you see the cops waiting at the Millennium Force exit ramp arresting everyone who had their hands up? The whole "keep your hands down" is just legal garbage. If you look at the design of the coasters, they are made to have enough room for anyone above the height requirement to ... I think on B&M's its 6'10", not sure about other manufactures ... allow you pretty much free movement that the seat will allow. And how do you keep people's hands down? Put massive horsecollars on them like Serial Thriller (WoA)- thats one of the few rides I have trouble putting my hands up on, and since its probably not a good idea for taller people to go "hands up" on an SLC anyway since it comes so close to the supports many times, thats why the restraints are that large.

Hands up, definitely. Somebody up there said that it lets you feel more out of control -- very true, and for me out of control means more thrilling.

I'm also one of those people who's got hands up (and feet out, usually -- ideally only my rear ever touches the coaster) and is screaming like a psycho on every coaster I go on except for kiddies (no need to scare the heck out of some poor kid sitting close). For me that makes the ride more enjoyable. When I'm with someone else, usually my bro, we scream and holler and try to get the rest of the train excited as well, because we've found that a train with everyone screaming is better than a quiet one. (Some of the best rides of my life have been on the Bull at SFGAm around closing time -- everyone is going nuts!) If I'm not completely hoarse by the time I leave a park then it wasn't a very exciting day.

But I've also been hit by arms and elbows and stuff (I'm careful to avoid throwing my limbs at others) and that sucks. If people can't keep to themselves they shouldn't be doing that stuff. Another thing that ruins coaster rides -- those high-pitched shrieks (sp?) that seem to be constant from first drop to station brakes. If I sit next to a teenage girl on a coaster I start bracing myself and praying that I can still hear when it's over. :)

If you can ride Deja Vu in row 8b and not hold on, you're a stud. Of course, just getting on Deja Vu can be difficult enough...

No love for the whiners

bigkirby, it is not a felony to not follow ride instructions in Ohio, it is a fourth-degree misdemeanor, which is very minor.

I put my hands up on woodies, usually just rest them in my lap on rides with OTSRs. I hold my hands straight up, however, unlike some of those inconsiderate clods (some of whom I call my friends :)) who hold their arms out at 45 degrees, right in front of my face so I can't see a thing...

He let the contents of the bottle do the thinking; can't shake the devil's hand and say you're only kidding.

I usually like to hold my hands up on the first drop and that's about it. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen people try to hold their arms up on coasters with OTSR. I think that is very stupid because it doesn't make you feel anymore out of control. Does anyone else think that that is stupid?
i rode with my hands up for 5 rides on the silver comet, it hurt really bad the next day though because the coaster really throws your arms around when they are in the air, i think next time ill try and just hold my hands in front of me if that is at all possible

MWB, we had trainloads of folks at the Con riding SFMM's Deja Vu without hands.....you have to REALLY trust the restraints.....;)
I don't think putting your hands up on OTSRs is stupid, I don't care if I'm the only one in the train doing it, I always put my hands up (unless there's some gigantic person beside me and I cant get my arms out of the space between the seats)
