Google returns? - CoasterBuzz

Is there any way to improve CoasterBuzz's rank on Google? What I mean is that if you type "rollercoasters" or "roller coasters" on Google, Coasterbuzz (the Num. 1 coaster site in the world according to Alexa, remember) does not show up until the second page.

Something seems wrong about that.

My sister-in-law's job is to consult with companies about how to design Web sites to become the first result on search engines. She leads conferences about it, speaks to company leaders, etc.

But I can't help you, sorry. :)

No offense, Den, but I think that people who consult on how to get higher search rankings are scamming people. Aside from paying for results (which I did for the first year I ran CB), there is no sure-fire way to do it without risking the chance of spamming the search engine, which will get you excluded.

Google ranks in part by checking out how many pages link to yours, and how relevant those pages are in turn. There are hundreds of pages that link to CoasterBuzz, and I've looked at many of them. Unfortunately, many of them are crap or personal pages that aren't relevant, therefore hurting the CB rank more than helping it.

But that said, it used to be on the fifth page, so second is an improvement.

Are you sure of that Jeff? I am pretty sure its by how many times people click that link on google. My dad is number 1 if you type in Doug on google, and thats what I thought he told me. I could be wrong though.

I'm the first result for SFNE. :)

Yeah, Jeff is correct. How many times your link is clicked doesn't make a squat of difference to Google. Is has a little merit in Yahoo's Directory - but just to get listed as a "most popular" site.

I don't think pages linking to you can actually hurt your rank, Jeff. It's just that they're not helping.

Beyond passe. Google doesn't even look at that line. Smaller engines do, but Google basically ignores it.

And Search Engine Optimization is about the easiest thing in the world. As much as you can be led to believe there are "secrets" - it's all kind of common sense. I have to laugh when people pay for that service.

Yeah, it's one of the reasons Google is the most useful search engine: it's about the only one where the first four pages of results are not dictionary spam. I don't know about you, but I hate it when no matter what I search for, I get the same useless portal page, usually pretending to be a search engine and usually trying to sell me a domain name...

Google rocks! :)

Although it is kind of odd that if you search for "casio digital camera instructions" you end up emailing *me* your support question...!

If you download the new google toolbar, 2.0, you can vote for webpages that you think are really good. The vice versa is true also.
