Geauga Lake announces water park and other attraction plans

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Geauga Lake today announced the addition of Wildwater Kingdom, a 20-acre water park on the former Sea World site that will include new attractions like a ProSlide Tornado, as well as relocated rides from the old water park.

"Robots of Mars" will occupy the Harbour Theater, while "Escape From Dino Island" will be the new simulator ride. General rehabilitation, including retracking of the Villain and Raging Wolf Bobs will be extensive throughout the park.

Perhaps most noteworthy is the new $24.95 standard admission price for the 2005 season.

Um, does anyone else realize that during 2005 there will be two waterparks at the park. That's a hassle for people who want to use both areas.

I'll spare the "giving away the gate" angle on this. :)

I think this move shows how ugly things were at the park this past season. You don't add a $24 million waterpark and drop the gate by $10 unless you're really desperate to get people in the park.

I knew it was bad in 2004 just from the TR's I read, but man.

I wonder how long that admission price sticks before we see it sneak back up?

The nice thing about the waterpark going next door is, that now, the neighbors shouldn't complain about noise as much anymore and they don't have to worry about a coaster in their backyard....

I wonder if the Music Express and Enterprise will ever return....
as well as the Rocket Ships and Flying Scooters

For those of you who expecting a coaster announcement, there is still 170 acres of unannounced land permitance, meaning that coaster you want may be coming in time....Sea World Ohio/SFWoA Wildlife Side totalled over 220 acres.
At least Northern Ohio isn't being treated like Southern California with multiple Soak Cities. I think Geauga Lake is finally on the right path- not to mention I can picnic on the lake for the first time in 22 years!
Seems to me like this is a great forward thinking move by the park. Opening up more room and sprucing up the park will only make guest happier about the experience. It was pretty sad passing by some of the dilipidated rides on the Wildlife side last year. I can wait a few more years on a coaster. I am excited to check out the new movies, the rehabbed woodies, and of course the Tornado slide (love those things). On a side note, one has to wonder if a water park update is in the near future for Soak City (Sandusky version)...

Now, from the renderings on Phase I... I don't see that Shark Attack triple tube slide that was put installed in 2003... is that there anywhere? Basically... is EVERY slide that was on the ride-side now relocated on this side & opening as part of Phase I, or are they saving some of the slides (scrapping others) in favor of Phase II?

It looks as if the 2 rides that opened in 2003 like the Thriller Bees & Starfish ride will be relocated closer to the rest of the rides, otherwise it'd be in the heart of the waterpark.

Anyone know if that Mandrian Buffet (Chinese) will still be around, or is that closed/relocated at all?

I hope some of the other improvements include a new paint job on a couple of the coasters to differentiate it from the old Worlds of Adventure, among other mild improvements not yet mentioned.

In 2006, I am almost certain that Phase II will introduce a seperate gate entrance fee for the waterpark. Its inevitable... especially if they keep gate admission around that price, they're not going to just all-of-a-sudden spike the price 10 bucks and expect the same crowds in 2006 that they got in 2005.

I think I might make a re-trip back out there if everything's kosher this year and there's new stuff to expect!

The price isn't bad at all, but I will probably do the "add-on" thing to my CP pass next Spring. That's an extra $26.

Glad to see that area of Geauga Lake being utilized. I figured they would use it for a new waterpark.

Out here in California we have Paramount's Great America that removed two coasters and are expanding their waterpark, but at a price of close to 50 dollars admission for both parks. Six Flags and Knott's charge extra for their waterparks on top of 50 bucks for just the theme parks. G.L. seems to have more and better coasters than P.G.A. (Grizzly anyone), and at 25 bucks for both and what looks like reasonable season passes and rehabs on their woodies, that's a heck of a deal.
$25 for a banging park/waterpark??? I'm guessing this is just to lure visitors for 2k5 and then have a huge hike in 2k6 (scratches chin) Very wise indeed. Amazing how it has become one of Cedar Fair's best parks so fast.

I can not imagine the park welcoming guests back with a cheaper gate one year, then kicking them in the face the following year.
This is the homerun for the park, they are doing everything they promised with the park making it a family park. The new pavilions, water park and 4d rides are all great additions for them. Cant wait to see it all next year!

I am a little confused however. Where exactly will the new waterpark be? On this map it looks like the Sea World side but on this one it looks like its staying where its at.

edit-> I see from the press release the only slide complex they are relocating is Hurricane Mountain, the rest is staying open at its current location. I can see all the annoying guests complaining about that one, they better do a good job of explaining the improvements coming with good signage all over the place.

The relocation and expansion of the water park to former Sea World site is a great move. Park patrons who wish to only visit the water attractions can park on that side of Geauga Lake, while people coming for the dry thrills continue to park in the main lot. – The similar successful layout as the great flagship park on Lake Erie. I can't wait to see what CF will do to the current site of Hurricane Hanna. A dream come true for Idora Park aficionados, like myself, would be the reconstruction of the Rocket Ships! :D
Talk about killing two birds with one stone. Not only does this use up the wildlife side extremly well, but it also will take care of the problems with overcrowding at the current location.
It will be kind of weird having just a wave pool open at a totally different end of the park this yearl, but im sure in 2006 itll be one of the best water parks around. Also notice the Tornado Slide, dont be suprised if you see another one of these slide at a CF park this year, and maybe a fourth one as well.
I know that it probably makes both good financial and logistic sense to move and expand the waterpark to the former Sea World side, but, personally, this does not excite me at all. Northeast Ohio has lost a truly unique attraction with the loss of the marine animals that no other park in the region had. Does Ohio need ANOTHER waterpark? Well, given how successful other parks like this have been, I guess so. And I'm sure that it will be successful for Geauga Lake. But, if we have another wet, cold summer like this past year, as you can guess, attendance to waterparks are affected much more. Hopefully, they'll add some non-waterpark attractions for 2006 as well. Not necessarily coasters (though that would be nice), but something that can attract people on cooler & rainy days as well. Changing the 3-D movie and simulator films will help, but they're really adding no new rides. Just returning two that were on the wildlife side to the ride side.

I hope it works for them, but, not being a water park person, I'm not as excited about this as everyone else seems to be. Hopefully, the former waterpark site on the ride side will open up the area for some decent expansion in the future.

It looks like there will still be the ski stadium with a show, It will probably atract more people now that the water park will be right behind it.
So is there gonna be 2 waterparks?(HH & WWK) Or are they renaming HH to fit with the WWK name?
It'll stay open until Phase 2 opens in '06. Read the release. What are you talking about losing an animal attraction? Ohio lost an animal attraction when Sea World left. It's no fault of Cedar Fair, in case you hadn't noticed, there were no animals over there last year.

The drop in gate will probably be made up by the picnic pavillions. If they do something similar to Kennywood and offer company and school picnics through the year, I think they'll make up the gate in catering and all that good stuff. Also, is it better to charge $10 more and barely reach 300 people in a day or charge $10 less and probably have a couple thousand or more people in the park?

What do you mean another waterpark? They're just upgrading the current one.
