Fun Spot chooses contractors to build $20 million expansion in Orlando

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The amusement park will be renamed Fun Spot America, with thematic elements drawn from various aspects of American culture. The 15-acre expansion is to include four water rides, a wooden roller coaster, a steel family-style roller coaster, a new go-kart track, a new SkyCoaster, and numerous other rides.

Their FB pages have been littered with season passes (presumably good at both Fun Spot locations). From the looks of it, I'm likely to add to my collection of passes from various chains in 2013... :)

Excuse my ignorance, but are they expanding the Orlando or Kissimee location?

^^Are those passes good at the Fun Spot in Angola, Indiana? Everytime I hear of this Orlando place (which I never heard of before a year ago, on here) I can't help but think of the little park we'd visit on the way to Cedar Point - in the 90's.

delan, this expansion is the Orlando location - for the rest of you, it's near Universal...the one with the Ferris Wheel visible from the parking monstrosity. *Insert cheap plug for Sweet Tomatoes restaurant across the street here*.

Billy, the Fun Spot in Angola was a completely separate business run by a local family in Indiana. The two in FL are co-owned I believe.

Yeah, they must be co-owned. I looked at their site, and they're doing some kind of a "Buy a Wristband here, get one to use at our other place" promotion.

The amusement park rises bold and stark..kids are huddled on the beach in a mist

A new Skycoaster? I wonder if they'll try to outdo their other one...

I sure hope so! It's rumored that Skycoaster has designs for up to 500 ft, but nobody has bought one yet.

OMG . ... I LOVE Sweet Tomatoes. Our tradition is to go to Universal, starve ourselves for the whole day, then head to Sweet Tomatoes before 4pm and pig out! We don't feel so guilty since its mostly vegetables and soup....that tomato basil soup is to die for.

What would the cost be to move the Hurricaine from Dania Beach...versus building a new woodie? Seems a shame to let it rot.

DBH is an amazing coaster. Orlando would be a perfect location to move it.

At one point, there were talks of the DBH going to the Miami Zoo. We haven't heard anything in a while. So, I'm not sure if that idea is dead in the water or not.

I've been to that zoo (then called MetroZoo). At the time, they had a monorail not too dissimilar from what used to run at Geauga Lake. They certainly have the room for DBH - not so sure how much land Fun Spot has behind their current location. I think the reference to Geauga isn't without merit, since DBH would probably only survive if it had an "anchor attraction" like the zoo, or like Geauga had in Sea World Ohio.

Oh, and delan, I plan my Orlando trips around visits to Sweet Tomatoes - wish we had one here in Gatortown.

RollerGator - Fun Spot passes are good at both of their parks. You can even visit both parks in the same day, unlike with any of their other armbands.

Delan - The Orlando park is the one being expanded. It is currently a 5 acre park and the expansion will grow it to a 15 acre park.

Castle Demon - Fun Spot Attractions (the 2 Florida parks) has no affiliation with the one in Indiana.

Mike - The Two parks are owned by the Arie family. They are not co-owned with anyone else.

Richard - They advertise the SkyCoaster in Kissimmee as the "World's Tallest", so they will not be trying to out do that title with the addition in Orlando.

I almost assumed a relationship between JDavis and Fun Spot until the "they" in the very last item. Informative indeed - thanks!

Any information on the wooden coaster?

Aamilj - The only thing I know about the wooden coaster is what's been posted on the web previously....They are getting one, construction is supposed to begin this spring and completed in time for the 2013 season. My understanding is that it is a new build and not a previously owned coaster. Sorry I'm not as informative this time :)

I saw a report today that Fun Spot is getting a GCI coaster. The report I read is here: http://newsplusnotes.blogspot.com/2012/01/detailing-fun-spot-orland...nsion.html

Can't go wrong with the out and back...
