Force record challenged as Steel Dragon prepares to open

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Coaster enthusiasts knew it was coming. Nagashima Spaland in Japan will open its newest attraction, Steel Dragon, a 318-foot tall roller coaster. The party isn't over yet, as Cedar Point says they'll keep calling Millennium Force the tallest until a third party can independantly measure both rides.

Steel Dragon is just a RIP OFF to Millennium Force. They would of not built SD2K cause of MF. MF is in my mind the BEST GIGA COASTER in the world. MF will always be the true GIGA COASTER!!!!!
I'm sure MF and Steel Dragon were conceived at the same time. Steel Dragon also looks completely different in layout and resembles Steel Force at Dorney Park. Look at the layout and the helixes at the far end and tell me you wouldn't want to ride.

If I could get to Japan, I'd be a coaster whore and take SD in a minute, and that's coming from a guy with an enormously poplular Cedar Point site!

It's not a religion folks...

I think its great the more hypers the better:).
One more thing, don't rule out Kennywood next year. Remember that they're taking out the Steel Phantom to put something else in. The Steel Phantom doesn't really take up a lot of room, so I'd expect something big. Remember that the Steel Phantom broke Magnum's drop record.
I think that steel Dragon is a gip. MF will always be better than sd. the force can go 115mph on a normal day. I will always go with mf instead of sd. Sorry but mf still reigns supreme *** This post was edited by Chitown on 8/1/2000. ***
115 mph?? Get serious.
Cmon folks, you didnt hear this much uproar when Goliath lost its claim of being the tallest. Goliath opened in February and lost to MF in May. MF basically is holding the same records for the same amount of time.
MF can't go 115,can't even break 95 mph.

Kids these days...

Steel Dragon looks absolutely awesome. All you people who keep saying that MF will "always be better" are only fooling yourselves. If Steel Dragon was in Ohio, all of you nay-sayers would scramble to be first in line, singing the praises of the new record holder, and you know I am right about that.

I live in Cali, and I was dissappointed when Goliath lost the crown, but I knew it was comming and I didn't cry about it.

Gotta ride 'em all!
I must be getting emotional in my old age because as far as coasters go I feel SFDL S;ROS is the best of all the intamin hypers or gigas. It's even better than S:ROS at SFA even though they are mirror image and even though I have not been to SFA I can just tell MY Superman is better. I think some of you will get my point while others are letting thier emotions get in thier way of seeing clearly.
Steel Dragon is not a RIP-OFF,as one would put it. I agree with Chitown on this one. Records are made to be broken. Hats off to the boys in Japan. We'll get'em in due time. I just wish that I could go to Japan to ride it.
I know there are a lot of people partial to Cedar Point. They are die hard fanatics of their coaster collection. I being one of them. However, we do have to give Japan credit for their creation as Great Mycke said above. Cedar Point isn't the only amusement park out there who wants to give the public new thrills. Yes, Cedar Point IS the originators of a lot of great rides. IE. The first hyper-Magnum, and now the first Giga-Millennium Force. Who else wouldn't want one? Why lose money from other parks having something great, when you can have your own and get people there instead. It's nothing but a continuous battle people. Maybe some of you are right. Maybe Millennium Force will remain the best giga, maybe not the biggest, but most thrilling. Or maybe SD will overshadow it in both ways. Either way, be pleased with what cedar point has and not with what it doesn't have. It has a great collection. One of each of the greatest coaster designs in the entire world. A stand up, an inverted, a huge woodie, the first GIGA, the first HYPER, the first corkscew coaster with 3 inversions.... and many many more... Don't hate them for what they do not have.. Love them for what they have. Who cares if SD is bigger.. I sure as heck don't.

steel dragon is weak it looses its speed after the first drop. MF keeps its speed thats why it is way better. SD maybe a little bit taller. But MF will always be the first coaster to top 300ft and the first giga coaster. In my Opinion it is still the best giga and will be for a long time.
How can you call it the best giga if you haven't even given the SD a chance. You are all just mad that CP got its title of holding the world's tallest coaster broken by the Japanese. What alot of discrimination this is.
This thread should probably be stopped before somthing bad happens. *** This post was edited by Sinker515 on 8/2/2000. ***
Gforce, since this is a news item I am not going to close it but do me a favor and quit the "MF is better than SD" statements because they hold no fact and quite frankly its getting old.
Steel Dragon is made by Morgan of California, you know the people who built Wild Thing, Steel Force, Mamba, and many more. I've only ridden Steel Force, but if that ride is any indication, I'd say Steel Dragon will be amazing. I also though MF was amazing, but it lacked the airtime of other hypers including Apollo's Chariot and S:ROS @ SFA.
Lacked airtime? Noooo..... There was a LOT on the hill before the tunnel! I loved that part! I was out of my seat the whole time! Then there was that other one right before the final 122 degree banked turn. I love the people rushing past you while you're going at least 50 or 60 (at least that's how fast it feels!) at the end :) hehe
