Earthquake in Northeast

I donÂ’t know about earthquake protection in the northeast but I can add that the epicenter was just outside Plattsburg, NY. The parks that would be most closely affected would be La Ronde (1-hour drive away) and The Great escape (about 2 hours away). Personally, it was bad enough to wake me here in Montreal, but I've felt worse ones over the years.

Hello, you're forgeting about Funtown Splashtown USA(Excalibur and Galaxi), Sebago Lake(Sebago Rapids), Old Orchard Beach(Dragon Coaster and the Serphent), Cascade Water Park(Demon Water Coaster), Cannobie Lake Park(Yankee Cannonball, Cannobie Corkscrew, Galaxi, and Dragon Coaster), Whalom Park(Flyer Comet), Kartland(Kiddie Coaster), and Six Flags New England(S:ROS, Thunderbolt, Cyclone, Poison Ivy, Great Chase, Mind Eraser, Flashback, and B:DK). All of those parks are much closer to the epicenter than La Ronde and Great Escape.

The only major coasters that it could pose any major threat to are the Flyer Comet that is in bad condition and the unstable Lincoln Park Comet if those P and S waves even took them in. All the coaster built here with in the last 70 years are earthquake proof. You guys are forgeting that Massachusetts gets more earthquakes than any other state besides Alaska. Even if most aren't feelable, we still are ready for the big ones. Buzz Head, I agree with you. They ain't seen nothin' until they comeback to my trip across the Dumbarten Bridge during the Great San Fransisco earthquake of 89'.

Geographically speaking, all the parks you mentioned above are about 150 to 200 further away from the epicenter than La Ronde and The Great Escape. Plattsburg, NY is in the Northeast corner of NY, not too far from the Canadian border and Lake Champlain. From a Six Flags perspective, after La Ronde and The Great Escape, Six Flags Darien Lake is slightly closer as the bird flys to the epi center and Six Flags New England.

BTW, after just watching the evening local new here in CT, you'd think that is was the worlds largest earthquake the way the media covered it. Frankly, I would have thought that the opening of B:DK and the opening of trout season in CT should have been a much more significant news story than a little old earthquake! :-)

I may have been hungover but I am certain that La Ronde is closer to Plattsburg than SFNE. Anyway, there was no actual damage. I was watching some Plattsburg news and there are a couple of broken and windows and some closed bridges and roads.

As others have said, Vertigo, you need to check your geography.

Funtown/Spashtown USA. Canobie Lake, SFNE, and Whalom are all between 215 and 275 miles from Plattsburgh, New York, while La Ronde is only 63 miles away (and TGE is 106). As MTL_Shag said, La Ronde and TGE are the closest coaster parks to Plattsburgh.

You should've seen the WFSB-TV3. They were on from 8-11 on Saturday morning just talking about the stupid thing.

My daughter felt the quake here in Maryland. The rest of us slept through it.

Remember that the effect of the earthqauke has a lot to do with local soil conditions. Downtown Mexico City got smashed by an earthquake far away due to its being built on sediments that shook like jelly. Areas far closer to the epicenter had very little damage due to better soil conditions.

Off the top of my head, I would think that coasters are probably pretty quake resistant as long as they don't get moved off their foundations.

My Dad lives in NE Massachusetts, and he said he didn't really FEEL the quake, but he heard a low rumbling sound for about 20 seconds or so.

And you California folks are right to laugh. I guess it's all a matter of what you're used to. Why don't you come down here to Florida the next time we have a category 4 or 5 hurricane move through, then you can see who's the wimps! ;)

I guess I've got to stop watching WVIT channel 30!

Lallen has a point about our hurricanes, but there IS a major difference in that we know they're coming for over a week. Quakes give a *bit* of warning, but most geologists aren't waiting for "the big one" on the East Coast...;)

Any resemblance between this post and humor is purely coincidental. No robots were harmed in the filming of this episode...The sarcasm filter default has been left ON for your enjoyment.

I live in a town that the hurricanes absolutely LOVE, Wilmington, NC. But, like they say, you know when that's coming, I call it time to run, lol. Every new storm, though, more people choose to stay it out because of what happens when three states flee, plus most everything's been blown away that's gonna blow away.

Some rides, like Medusa in Mexico City(the CCI, is that where it is?) are supposed to have added protection against the 'quakes.

Just for the record, there were people that felt it at SFNE.

Habba nice day. :)

If the shoe fits, find another one.

there was a 3.5 when i was at SFMM and i felt nothing at all. Same with when Ohio had a low 4 (about) i didnt feel anything. I doubt a 4 would do anything to a coaster or any building built after 1900...

Yeah, this is pretty funny. But Coastration, I see you're from around the Bay Area like me. What if we got one of their blizzards, we're not prepared for that, just like they're not prepared for earthquakes.

You are exactly right about the blizzards. We get 2 feet up here in NY we think nothing of it. North Carolina this year got 2 inches and people freaking out and schools were closed. Hell, my school is barely ever closed no matter how much snow there is

Anyone interested in earthquakes should check out the US Geological Survey site www.usgs.org You can check real-time reporting of earthquakes around the world. I check it every morning when I get to work.

You guys out in Cali need to move to the Midwest and get some nice tornadoes in the spring and a couple feet of snow in the winter, add hail, freezing rain, and various other problems, and then you can complain about earthquakes, you guys would freak.

MagForce - I'm one So Cal native that *has* lived in the middle of the country. I'll take snow, hail, freezing rain, tornados and "various other problems" over earthquakes any day.

Yep, there is nothing more frightening or more powerful than the actual *earth* shaking beneath you.

I'd take an earthquake over a tornado any day, at least with an earthquake you still have your clothes, pictures, books etc etc etc. With a tornado you are lucky if any thing is left, of course its around just spread over miles and miles.
