Still SFMM has nothing even close to rivaling the marvelous Ghostrider..."
I honestly can say that I'd rather go to Knott's just for GR and Monte over The Mountain's arsenol. But good wood trumps everything else for me.

Cedar Point 2003, and it begins...
From what I have been hearing about SFMM latly they don't have the staffing or the money to run the ones they already got. The only reason why they'll build one is probally to replace one they're getting rid of. I doubt they'll just go up to 16 too fast otherwise.
BTW, How many working coasters does SFMM have?
PS: I would love to see what Flashback is like. I did like the Batman The Escape (SFAW) ride which was built by the same people as Flashback. I have watched in NL and drooled all over it.

The Mantis is real. The Mantis is out there. The Mantis is protecting my yard from West Nile Mosquitos (No Joke).
Let me just clear up a few things as SFMM is a former employer of mine. When SFMM closes a ride it is NOT for staffing reasons. If anything, the park has always been over-staffed. The coasters at SFMM suffer tremendous wear and tear every year, being that the park is open year round, sometimes in 100plus degree heat. They don't have the priviledge of an off season to replace complicated parts, so alot of times coasters will go down through out the summer, just as your car will if you drive it everyday without tune up.
So the obvious question is ask, why doesn't Knott's have this problem? Well, Knott's doesn't have 15 rollercoasters, but I'll tell you this. Now that Ghostrider has aged some, and the park has begun to add high tech rollercoasters, you're already seeing the things that begin to happen as a result. There is no guarantee that you will arrive at Knott's and both Xcelerator AND Ghostrider will be running. Both rides also open late, usually because mechanics find a concearn that they want tested before the ride opens to the public. The more coasters you add without the benefit of an off season, the more of this you will see, mark my words.
So contrary to popular belief, these parks aren't pulling a prank just to piss you off. In most cases there is a good reason and it usually concearns your safety.
Now, back to the original question. Given the almost impossible task of running 15 rollercoaster all year long, why should they add another? Because SF inc. says they should, bottom line. SFMM doesn't have a whole lot of say in the matter. My only concearn is, if they're going to add one, I'd like to see a emphasis on capacity, reliability and 'old fashion fun' free from gimmicks.

I can also say that I prefer Knotts small quality coaster line up over the massive one at the mountain. This is probably due to the fact that I love wood coasters and MM has none worth mentioning. But I found the rides at MM to be very over-hyped. I'd take Mantis over RR any day for the intensity. Batman is fun, but short. Goliath is very good but also a little on the short side. The rest of the coasters I found to be average at best but I haven't ridden X yet.
I also prefer Knotts because IMO the ride-ops were faster and more efficient. The park was clean and the employees were nice, and all the coasters were running. If I could only go to one park in So. California I'd go to Knotts, not only for its nice line up of coasters, but for its other major attractions Supreme Scream and Perlious Plunge.
IMO Magic Mountain should try and fix some of their problems before they add a new coaster.

Does SFMM ever NEED a new coaster? NO! Will they get one anyway? ALWAYS! Does SFAW always NEED a new coaster? YES! Will they ever get one? NEVER!

If you build it, they will come!
I have never been to SFMM but from what I hear, they should work on perfecting what they already have before seeking something else out. Otherwise, they will continue to have trouble.
Six Flags Magic Mountain announced today its plans for the 2003 season. The new roller coaster, named "Y" will be a prototype 5th Dimension. Billed to be the first entirely digital coaster, Six Flags broke ranks by hiring a movie studio, and not a typical ride designer. This also marks the first time a ride has been copyrighted, and not patented. Six Flags got the idea after nearly spending five million dollars on another non-working coaster, "X" at its California location. This coaster should be easily copied at the other parks should SBNO coasters continue to spur annual pass sales.
That is pretty much what stuff is starting to sound like. I know exactly what Six Flags Magic Mountain needs, and what rides they should add for 2003:
X - open with two trains
A second side for Superman
Monorail
Sky Tower
Revolution without brakes and OTSR's
Flashback with new trains
Psyclone with new track
Colossus, racing, with old track (double dip)

TOGO!
I think Six Flags is starting to back itself into a corner really quick when it comes to Magic Mountain (Something I think Cedar Fair is starting to do with Cedar Point) in that you get your customer base set to expect one thing.
Let me explain, your average Los Angelas park going peep is going to know that Magic Mountain is building a coaster every year. (I'm assuming here that the public thinks that X is a 2002 coaster for obvious reasons). So if the park doesn't build a coaster next year or the year after that the GP is going to think that the Mountain is in trouble.
I'm concerned with the customer base from the Toledo/Columbus area getting into the same routine with Cedar Point. In that if CP doesn't build a coaster in 2004 they'll be upset. However, Cedar Point hasn't been putting in coasters every year for six years straight like Magic Mountain has.
Just a thought.

All I need is 4.5 million bucks and a half a mile long sliver of land and maybe someone could build me my very own Shivering Timbers. ;)
NO! SFMM does not need another coaster! They already have 15 and one of them is a one of a kind. What the park really needs is about 10 flat rides to add to their ride collection. The park would be just about perfect if they did this.
