Displayed User Name

Hey Jeff, I realized something at CBCon that's been bugging me. My username just isn't very easy to use, either in speech or text. When I tried introducing myself to Chitown, I didn't know how to say my username so he'd understand it! Everywhere else on the internet, JoNoJ27 has evolved into a simple Jono. But here on Coasterbuzz, short of either me begging you to somehow change my username or me making a new user, I have no real way of doing this myself.

I know you've got better things to do, but I wonder if you would be capable of having the option of changing a user's displayed name. For instance, my username would still be JoNoJ27 and would be visible either in the post somehow or just in the user profile, but the displayed name would be Jono. This is something that has been implemented in other such BB software and I have seen it work well, without allowing users to mask their identity. I would guess that this isn't something you could just easily implement into the current version of the software, but is it something you'd think about?

I always wondered why people pick such complex names for forums. As if anyone wants to type "MiLeNnIuMFORCErulez24381" every time they respond to someone.

If it was up to me, everyone would just use their real name or nickname that they use in real life. It's not like being known as "Bill" or "Tom S." on the internet is going to open you to identity theft or anything.

Changing user names is not an option because it releases people of all accountability to their identity. It's not impossible anyway, (i.e., CPnuts/TTD), but it is a deterrent.

Den: I used that handle because, at the time, I was only looking to lurk or ask a few questions, so I chose an AIM alias. It is a mistake from 3 years ago that I now regret! :)

Jeff, I understand that idea, but it could be a non-issue based on the implementation. I guess I need to show you an example of what I mean:

This is a board I am a moderator at, and you can see in the left bar that, although my user name remains unchanged, the displayed name is different. I have seen users change their names, but since the user name remains constant, there is still complete accountability for the user.

If that doesn't convince you, any chance of you changing my user name for me? :)
