Disney's new tricks to satisfy interactive expectations

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Today's children, weaned on the Wii, Second Life and DVD "Easter eggs", look for more than the roller coasters and jerky automatons that entertained the youth of the 1970s. "The emerging generation expects more immersive, personal and interactive experiences in every facet of their lives," says Bruce Vaughn, chief creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering.

You can listen in any of a dozen languages. Plus there are endless combinations for the custom ending! And any true fan knows who to thank for your ABC's. :)

Oh yeah, I forgot that you could change the language that way. Despite what people say, I actually *like* the new Spaceship Earth.

I'll be down in less than 2 months so I'll have to give it a go in Japanese. :)

I was tempted to hit a different language numerous times, but I wasnt sure I could handle 14 minutes of that. Though I've heard the script enough to know exactly what's being said where.

Personally I was tempted for the Portuguese language selection..

I wish there was a "listen to Spaceship Earth as narrated by Jeremy Irons" (or Walter Cronkite for that matter)

OK.. That Sig made me chuckle...

Darn that monorail commentary... Now I have that in my head again!

Raven-Phile's avatar

Haha, I've kind of been on a Spanish monorail guy kick lately. :-D

When you said Portugese, it made me think of that again.

who to thank for your ABC's.

Thank the Phoenicians!

I wish there was a "listen to Spaceship Earth as narrated by Jeremy Irons"

www.mousebits.com has several source audio tracks of the Irons version. The Cronkite version might be there too. All kinds of other goodies for the Disney theme park media geek.

on a Spanish monorail guy kick

I liked it so much, I bought the t-shirt. I got mine in the Poly gift shop, but I suspect each of the monorail resorts have them. Interestingly, the phrase on the shirt is not exactly the same as the one spoken on the monorail: "mantengase" instead of "mantenganse".

Edited to add: just three and a half more weeks before we start our week at Old Key West. I'm ready to get the hell out of all this snow for a while.

Speaking of Spaceship Earth, Diana became obsessed with finding hidden Mickeys in there. She found two. One was some paint cup rings arranged on a table in the library on the left I think, and in the same scene, three scrolls arranged so that when you see them head-on, they form the Mickey. There are also several in stickers, but I'm not sure if they count. One is on the car window of the ambiguous Steve in California garage.

A Cast Member bud of mine mentioned that a Hidden Mickey's can take different forms. The most common image is the tri-circle Mickey frontal silhouette: three circles that form Mickey’s round head and adjoining round ears. Other images include a side profile of Mickey’s face and head, a side profile of his entire body, a full-body frontal silhouette, a detailed picture of his face or body, or a three-dimensional Mickey. A Mickey related artifacts can be one as well. (Theres a mickey clock in Teenage Boys room on SE).

His name or initials in unusual places may also qualify as Hidden Mickeys, though when its initials I often see Walt's Initials or Imagineers initials (WDI). The key is it has to look "intentional" or placed in areas not overtly obvious.

My wife too is obsessed with seeking them out. We have a huge photo archive of all the ones that she/we found..

Brian Noble:
Not sure when exactly you are there, but theres also a Shuttle Launch (tenative 12th of Feb), which is another reason why we are going down.. Dont forget to look east at 7:30am if you are there (assuming no delays).

Hehe Brian, I had planned on stopping in the Poly gift shop on the way to 'Ohana and picking one of those up. Someone else suggested I should get that saying incorporated into my tattoo somewhere, but that might be pushing it. :)

I think the tattoo would qualify you as a true Disney Geek.. Not pin trading, knowing all trivia, going into cold sweats when its time to fly home geek.. But pretty darn close..

Course the ones who identify the tattoo share equal billing ;)

I think what I have going so far already seals the deal.

My wife designed it. :)

Aww come'on.. Make the task a bit more challenging.. The original EPCOT Center logo.. :)

Though that does look pretty cool.. hmmm... Guess beers and a tattoo are in my future..

I believe Spaceship Earth has Mickey and Donald "walking like an Egyptian" in the Egypt scene hieroglyphs.

I really hate to admit knowing this, but the Hieroglyphs you are referring to are on The Great Movie Ride (at Hollywood Studios) during the Raiders of the Lost Ark scene not in Spaceship Earth.

...again I blame my wife for knowing these things....

Rightfully so. It's ALWAYS the wife that wants to go on the [somewhat] Great Movie Ride. :)

Just for the record, the Kim Possible thing is really cool. I don't want to give anything away here (I do in the Podcast), but definitely give yourselves a half hour to at least try one of the missions and appreciate how Disney put the interactive items in plain sight and made them work on two levels - for those playing and those not. Some are better than others and each mission has four moments of setting off something - ranging from "eh, ok" to "Niii-iiice"

We did three of the seven possible missions and the kids were pissed that we didn't do more. Very simple to play, enjoyable for all and a very popular experience - the little phones playing the Kim Possible theme were everywhere. I even saw adults playing (unlike me, they didn't have kids to hide the fact that they indeed were enjoying the game :) )

Good stuff. I'd definitely be interested in seeing more of this kind of thing.

Thanks for making me kick myself for not doing it.

... and thanks for giving me a reason to go back! (because I need a reason, you know :) )

We were there on Tuesday and I saw quite a few Kim Possible players. Even though I've heard (on here, mainly) that it's fun and interesting, it seemed at first glance like it might put us in danger of having to do particular things and places rather than just approaching the day casually. Is it possible that one is so busy solving quests and looking for clues that other aspects of the park may be overlooked?

I guess I'm forgetting that I no longer travel with kids, and this interactive system may be the perfect thing in a park that has less to interest the average tween. If in the future if I know we have more than one day at EPCOT I'll try it.

By the time I got to Hollywood Studios on Wednesday (a two park day) Toy Story was "sold out" for the day. (standby was almost 2 hrs and fastpasses were gone) I was so bummed. Now I have a reason to go back, too!

Gemini's avatar

We didn't make it on TSM either. We got back there around 11:30am and the FastPasses were gone for the day. The stand-by was 70 minutes.
