I guess part of the reason this is funny to me is because costumed characters are placed in parks because they make the guest feel like a small part of this cartoon world is here in the flesh. The fact that he was in a Dog suit makes it ok to be entertained by his actions. "Hey kids, it's Pluto! Let's go give him a hug! Aww, look at that, he's walking down the street. Look he's lying under that float, how cute!"
I suspect that the Holiday World incident was given more respect because it hit close to home. This is a coaster enthusiast community and it was a coaster enthusiast who died. But this is also an amusement industry community. I'm sure there are many Disney castmembers who visit here.
We're not talking about O.J., astronauts, or serial killers. We're talking about a death in the amusement industry.
Unfortunately, some might find humor, for example, in the space shuttle accident (and there were plenty of jokes). That's one thing. But imagine if that lame attempt at humor had been posted on a space enthusiast web site. That wouldn't be cool. There's a time and place for everything. This just isn't it.
Everyone wants to argue about why it's OK to laugh at death. That's not the point. The point is whether or not humor is appropriate on this web site at this time. I don't think it is. *** Edited 2/13/2004 7:25:03 PM UTC by Gemini***
