Disney announces or teases a ton of attractions at D23

Posted | Contributed by bigboy

From IGN:

There were updates for Disney Parks all around the world, and some of the big highlights included plans for Dinoland U.S.A.'s reimagination into a new land with Encanto and Indiana Jones experiences and the opening date for the Moana-themed Journey of Water. However, there was so much more and this article has gathered all the biggest announcements you need to know.

Read more from IGN.

Yeah, that wouldn't even cover the cost per day per person of a high quality cruise.

It sounds pretty pricy to me, especially if it doesn’t cover accommodations.

That said, the point was made earlier that if lots of announcements end up not going anywhere, the best thing to do is indeed just stop going. The power to vote with a wallet is always there.

Aruba sounds better though.

Aruba always sounds better.

The turtles don't talk in Aruba.

Yeah, but they're also not dopey.

The ones I go to cost more.

Here's an example. This is a non-profit. Four days, includes four lunches, one evening with "heavy hors d'oeuvres" and one dinner. Lodging is not included. 950 euro for early bird pricing. Back out the dinners and convert to three days, and you get 600 euro or $640, more than even the "VIP" tier of D23.

Aruba’s alright. Better than Cisco, but I really like UniFi.

Oh. I mean, I like crystal blue waters and white sand beaches.

I think Universal resumed construction well before Disney, and is nearly done building a whole park, and multiple hotels, while Disney took 6 years to build a clone, redo a plaza, and a very well-themed splash area

Stop comparing to Universal. Both parks use different builders and deal with completely different local governments and Epic is nowhere close to being done. They did finish VelociCoaster before Tron but some of the companies working for Disney went out of business due to Covid. So if you know anything about construction, you can't just start back up with a new company right way. From ground breaking to trains running, Tron was about 4 years.

I'll tell you a little secret about the Hardcore Disney Fanbase: "they're never happy."

They don't even know what they want and when you give them something awesome they always find some reason to not like it. In many ways like the enthusiast community, it's almost a badge of honor to be dissatisfied with something. It's an attempt to project the air of "I know better than to like this."

I am generally pretty into Disney, but I find myself losing my motivation to fork over that much money for what the parks currently offer (sadly this mostly revolves around Genie+ hacks which no longer work), which is totally fine. I don't have any inkling that Disney is screwing me or the company has its head up its posterior.

Hobbes: "What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do?"
Calvin: "If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun."

Disney doesn't owe you or anyone else anything and, if you think they do, speak with your wallet.

That is why Disney created the cult, they piss them off harder than anyone else, but take more of their money by giving them unique things and making them special.

They may bitch about lines for a bloody Figment popcorn bucket, but now they monetize it with their YouTube video so other people in the cult can watch and talk about it. They bitch about the most incremental changes but lord knows how much they spend on food and merch than the average park goer.

But I think you missing the point D23 is directly speaking to these people because they are special, it's directly feeding and fueling these people's obsession with why Disney is better and worth all of their time and money, hidden mickeys, insane limited food, tracking and reviewing every menu item.

It's not just fandom it's a whole economy. And they expect their expectations to be met.

I also think you're missing how social media and Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, is throwing a giant can of Kerosene on this give-and-take fire. All social media favors being special or unique and being mad, and takes.

I speak with my wallet by not having been to Orlando since Galaxies Edge opened. And not planning on going anywhere near FL until Epic Universe opens.

I promised long ago I would go to DisneySea and TDL before WDW again.

You keep trying to make a rather unconvincing argument that Disney is doing something wrong by selling something for which there is clearly a market. If people are willing to pay to go to a conference where Disney tells them how great they are and they get pissed off when plans change, I'm not sure how that's on Disney.

"Those people" are not victims. They are not being harmed. Disney isn't "doing" anything to them. And there are no shortage of those obnoxious people live blogging their way around the parks.

I don't think there is a lot that distinguishes a rabid Disney fan from any other rabid fan base. Look no further than conversations and debates happening right now amongst Apple fans and Jets fans.

Disney isn't "doing" anything to them

Just fleecing them for all the money they can, which is good business, but at what cost?

Which brings us to Chapek, who found that line. I think by trying to treat the general public like the D23 crowd.

My heart bleeds for all those poor Disney nuts, unwillingly being robbed of their money by the very entity they love...to complain about.

This is what is opening a few years late at Hong Kong Disneyland:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B140qWoO_YM

Frozen Ever After is a new version of the Epcot Frozen dark ride, with a modernised and higher capacity ride system. Whereas the Epcot ride used a prototype Intamin flume system with too wide for 3 adults, not wide enough for 4 adults boats. The Hong Kong Disneyland/Walt Disney Studios Paris version uses custom 4 rows, 4 passenger wide Intamin Spillwater boats with the same lap bars as Escape from Pompeii. This will greatly improve capacity and given the lower attendance at those parks versus Epcot, it is perfect and lines should be manageable. The animatronics look amazing as well, going away from the projected faces at Epcot and toward the Tokyo Disneyland Beauty and the Beast latest animatronics. I went on that ride last march and it is baffling how realistic and incredible they look.

The roller coaster is Wandering Oaken's Sliding Sleighs. It uses the ride system Vekoma used on Big Bear Mountain this year, but at 970 feet of track, is more of a Barnstormer scale of ride. I view it more as rideable kinetic energy that finally adds the Vekoma coaster that was cut from the opening day roster at Hong Kong Disneyland. Unfortunately, the roller coaster won't be present at the World of Frozen in Paris. That space is occupied by a canal and marina for a nighttime show on the new lake.
