Disney allegedly eyes Coney Island properties

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

According to the New York Post, the Walt Disney Co. is looking at the Coney Island properties to consider the feasibility of developing the renewing the area. Disney denies any interest.

The same reason people hate Microsoft.

Disney dominates American popular culture like few other buisnesses, and is therefore the target of animosity from people who are not so fond of that American Culture as it stands.(not that disney is actually to blame for the ills of our culture- an over abundance of violence, a debatably unhealthy preocupation with sex, the seemingly endless hype from movies,tv, pop stars, etc.)

My original point however must not be clear- there are people in NYC who will fight ANY developement that Disney is interested in putting forth on Coney Island. NYC is actually quite famous for a history of community activism against development projects. Citizen groups have succesfully fought highways, huge building projects, etc. I dont see how Disney could go into that area without getting rid of some things. The burlesque shows come to mind first. I will also add, that if the Hotel Breakers were built in Manhattan, I would bet any amount of money that there would have no destruction of any wings.

Its my humble opinion that Coney Island is almost completely devoid of any charm whatsover-other than the charm of drug dealing, homelessness and crime. (maybe Nathans hot dogs, and the beach) Obviously, they wouldnt harm the Cyclone- but what else is there that is worth saving- the rustbucket parachute tower? I dont know.

I for one, don't hate Disney, their contrubution to American culture has been profound- Walt Disney was most likey a genius.(albeit, an ultra-right wing,name-naming, genius)

Unhealthy preoccupation with sex? I've always thought we were too uptight about it!

thats off topic. heh heh

If you lived in Florida you might start getting a clue as to why some people don't like Disney. There have been many transit projects and development projects that were scrapped because Disney wanted to control where the trains stopped, eliminate the other parks in the deal, ect. They DOMINATE Florida and have a LOT of power here.

I don't hate Disney at all but they are very cunning. Have you ever noticed how people never die on Disney property? Many women have killed themselves over the years on Disney property. Disney has this "way" of making sure everyone that dies there is pronounced dead at the hospital. It's kind of like men going to Vegas for their last "hurrah" before they "off" themselves. Women go to Disney for that.

Different states have different rules as to how hard is is to build in a historical area. Hell, I have a client that can't even make modifications to her house unless it goes to a county board because he house has landmark status.

To compare the landmark status of a piece of the Breakers hotel in Ohio to Coney Island is a joke. Coney Island is a piece of Americana thet is easily recognized by many people.

Oh, so yours is better than mine? Please... just because you're not aware of the rich history we have here on the North Coast doesn't make it any less important. At least the hotel is still in use, unlike said historic landmark (the parachute tower). Besides, my point was that historic or not, there's nothing preventing it from being torn down.

Call Disney evil, but would Orlando be without it? Heck, what would Universal or I-Drive be without Disney?

I am shocked that there are so many people out there that would be opposed to a Disney-fueled rebirth of Coney Island!

Go to Coney right now... enjoy the Cyclone, the Jumbo Jet and Nathan's, and then absorb all that is great about the place. You'll find nothing besides beggars, dark alleys and abandoned remnants of long-gone parks.

I'm sorry, but if you would rather see Coney Island continue as it is rather than see a company like Disney put some money into the place, then you really need to re-evaluate some of your thinking. I'm all for the expression of opinions, but there are things that are just TOO obvious.

I don't have any problem with Disney taking ownership of this area. But Cricket said it best: There WILL be resistance and if the Breakers were in Manhattan it would've been MUCH harder to do what they did. It isn't the importance, it's the location. Get it?

Also, if Disney wasn't in Orlando it would still be a major city, much like Tampa. It isn't like they saved the community because they are there. Have you seen the property values in the area? Very low. That's because of low paying jobs and the transient nature of the city. Trust me , I live close by.

Now, someone go find the post of how the whole "mouse concept" was actually ripped off of someone else.

Disney is great but don't elevate them to God status.
