Disaster Transport Exposed?

Hey Gang!

Check out this photo of Wicked Twister's topping: http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/inside_park/rides/thrill/2002/wt/construction/picture.cfm?id=118

Is is just me, or is the piece of Disaster Transport track in this photo UN-enclosed?

Yeah...there are several places in the ride that are actually "outside the box" (hehe) That's why there are some portions in the ride that are completely dark...

Sept. 11th 2001, Slayer released God Hates Us All. The song "Disciple" uncannily describes the events of that day, as well as the antrax letters that followed.

No no no! I know that there are tubes outside of the building! I mean, doesn't it look like the top half of the "tube" is missing?

The angle of that photo makes it look like that section is not enclosed.  It always has been, though.
it looks that way but is you look closer at the farther part of the turn u will se the top on it. It is one of the sharp turns so its not as other ouside parts look like.

I hate to do it, but I agree with Walker on this one ;)

I think it was be brilliant of the park, and a sweet rush to go storming by Wicked Twister in an open portion of Disaster Transport. Main drawback to that idea, however, is what do you do when it rains...??? :)

I remember when DT wasn't enclosed but it was called something else.  Can someone else provide any info. on it?  I was so little I don't remember it that well.  I do remember riding DT its first year and waiting for what seemed to be eternity.  I remember the theming in-line kinda scared me.
Do a search for Avalanche Run on RCDB.
I can't beleive I'm reading this.  I knew it was a dead area of the park but come one people.  DT is NOT exposed.  Keep in mind that when they redid the ride they did NOT paint the entire ride.  Most of the trough is still blue.

Disister Transport was called 'Avalanche Run." It was a modern version of the old classic "Flying Turns" coasters that were popular in the twenties I think.
You kids are starting to make me feel old.  You don't remember Avalanche Run?  (Not as good as Screamin' Delta Demon, but still an neat ride when it opened!)

Here are some pictures from the late 80s to show you what it looked like...

Here are some pictures showing the modern configuration of the track.  Definately inclosed, but not in a building...

It's a bobsled, guys, which means the majority of the trough (before it had a lid) is on the outside of the turn.

It isn't open.

I posted on a thread a week or so ago that I thought it would be cool for CP to take off the "lid" on the external portion where it approaches WT.  Somebody smart at CP is listening, and realizes this is a good way to increase the ridership on DT...or so I'm telling myself, LOL.

Well, it'd be a neat effect but having the bobsleds open isn't exactly convenient for the park since it makes rain operation impossible...which is probably why they stuck AR in the building to begin with.

I think Mr. Walker's on to something....

I wouldn't be surprised that the portion of the helix is uncovered to give you a view of WT.

As to running in the rain, I seem to remember that as Avalanche Run, it would continue operating in a light rain, but stop in a downpour. Any other of my fellow old-timers back me up???

I don't think they would uncover it...the rain wouldn't matter, since you'd be uncovered for like one second, but the reason Avalanche Run was enclosed was because sand was getting in the track and messing it up.

On that curve, would you even be able to see WT?  It seems like your butt would be pointing towards the spike on that curve.

Thanks for the post Dan!
It looked open to me, but I can definitely see that is is not. Dan usually has these kind of things afigured out for sure so he's really the one to go to on these things. Just thought  that something might have happened. You have to admit, it is a decieving photo!
Later!

And if you look at the webcam it looks open from there too.  What an optical illusion!  Thanks Dan for clearing this up.  ::bows::
