DeSantis reportedly wants to bring Disney's Reedy Creek under state control

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will seek to bring Disney's special governing district under direct state control in a bid to end the entertainment giant's multi-decade arrangement with the Sunshine State. DeSantis is expected to appoint a new board to control Reedy Creek.

He's running through the Trump playbook page for page, albeit with actual executive government power and at least on the surface a little more polish. And the craziest part about it? A large bloc of the Republican party still thinks he isn't conservative enough.

I heard a former FOX reporter talking yesterday about the newly revealed acknowledgments by Rupert Murdoch that a number of FOX talking heads admittedly lied and misled their viewers about the results of the election. It is pretty cut and dry, and is going to be a legal problem for FOX, but she made an excellent report. FOX will not report this little nugget and, therefore, the viewers will never know FOX lied.

I'm not ready to say FOX viewers are intellectually dishonest or bankrupt but if they are not exposed to any alternative sources of information then they are left with this one, jaded...and often dishonest narrative. I am more an NBC/MSNBC/CNN guy...and I'm trying to give NewsNation a chance. But, I still check out FOX every day to see what they are covering and to see if I may be missing something of value. I don't care, generally, for their perspective, but I still expose myself to it.

Figured this was appropriate for the discussion…

Ha ha. Reedy Creek couldn't be further from the content pipeline.

That's exactly why I tune unto the aforementioned radio station. I have a relative that was drawn way into the b.s., so I like to eavesdrop every once in awhile.

That was good for a laugh. But then it made me sad that this is the reality that we live in.

Check ‘em out all you want, fellas. Just don’t patronize their sponsors, lol.

If conservatives really want to stick it to ‘Woke’ Disney, then stop supporting them financially. Won’t ever happen though.

I saw an article today that explored what Disney really lost due to the law. Like several have said on here, the answer is essentially nothing.

But reading the comments, I think it is safe to say that DeSantis has his political victory in hand as it seems it is firmly believed that he has stuck it to the big corporation.

Does he even know how "occupy" he sounds?

The Washington Post reported the following:

"Though the board is tasked with overseeing duties such as sewage treatment and road maintenance at Disney's properties, DeSantis suggested Monday that he is also expecting it to act as a sort of moral arbiter for the company he has described as a "woke Burbank corporating" that is "trying to inject woke ideology on children."

"When you lose your way, you've got to have people that are going to tell you the truth," DeSantis said. "But I think all of these board members very much would like to see the type of entertainment that all families can appreciate."

As reported by Steve Benen, MSNBC.

Well, not ALL families.

I was once a proud Republican. The idea that government should be dictating what corporations should be doing is about as far from what they used to represent as I can imagine.

Me too, I’m a small govt guy who lost his party. The GOP has become an authoritarian party in the last 10 years, and as an ardent supporter of democracy I’ve shunned it and voted straight democrat as they are the only viable party that supports democracy currently. Some things are more important then money, freedom is one of those things.

This is one of the 5 people on the board

After reading this I fear some lifestyle changes might be headed my way given that I drink a lot of tap water, upwards of a gallon per day, right out of the faucet.

Nothing to worry about if you're not a frog.

I drink a lot of filtered tap water. Should I be worried?

As the Disney boards have pointed out, there’s a Reedy Creek meeting next week (old board, new one hasn’t been confirmed by senate) and on the minutes there is a section listed as “special council.” Disney might not be fighting it, but old Reedy Creek may be. We shall see.

Council or counsel?

Agenda (under New Business) lists two items: 2023 Meeting Schedule and Special Counsel.

Not clear what that means. Could be trying to fight the board change. Maybe Disney wants to stay out of the fray but is looking to the board to fight. But Disney could shut that down. Could be looking for legal advice as to how to handle to change over (fearing they could face potential personal liability if its now done right). Might just present an opportunity at the meeting to vent. We shall see.

Woke = awareness of others unlike one’s self and consideration for those others. Quite a Christian concept.

Today’s Republicans are farthest from being Christians as anyone. This is just another attack on common human decency by that party.

There is nothing conservative about the government dictating what a business can do, especially with their right to freely express their opinions.

It’s hard to seriously weigh various views on economic, foreign, spending, tax, and even social policy when “owning woke libs” seems to dominate the raison d’etre (pardon my French).
