Cuss Word Masking

Sawblade5's avatar
I am starting to notice a rise on the usage of Cuss Word Masking on this site. It just makes me feel like I am talking to a whole bunch of 12 year old AOLers, when they do it. On the topic at http://www.coasterbuzz.com/forum.aspx?mode=thread&TopicID=34780 a few members even were calling all ACE members bad names. I didn't do anything wrong to get to be called that. Also on the topic of http://www.coasterbuzz.com/forum.aspx?mode=thread&TopicID=34798 we had someone post and mask a cuss word while being off topic, just to make everyone mad and to try to start a flame war.

I believe this stuff shouldn't be allowed here as it already not allowed on many other websites, because they are very offensive and sometimes they start flame wars.

For those who agree or even disagreee, please reply and please no name calling.

I see no problem with it, and swearing's a part of my vocabulary. It's very hard for me to try and control it for the few situations that I feel its necessary to control it - I don't see any kids under 10 around here, so I don't see any reason to control the occasional masking. Besides, if you think less of me because I find it much more meaningful to call someone a @(*#@$@($*@#$# rather than a doodiehead, well that's your opinion.

Hey, **** you. ;)

Alright, call me ignorant, but I've seen "ROXOR!!!111 w00t!!!111" a few times around here.

Can someone please explain what the heck that means? (without completely spelling it out, obviously) Or is it just some inside joke?

If I see it, I'll delete it, but I don't have the time or desire to read every post on this site. If you see something that bothers you, drop me, or GregLeg, ShiveringTim, One and Only Coaster God, etc., a message.

There's some story behind it. It's exaggerated sarcasm that pokes fun at those who use an unnecessarily excessive amount of punctuation and shorthand.

It's also sometimes called 'elite speech' or '3l337 sp33ch' or 'the language of computer nerds'

I wouldn't necessarily call it "shorthand," but more like the "eDestruction of the English language."

Side Note: Things are much cooler when you put "e" in front of them: "eMail" "eCommerce" "eTooth-brushing"

I wonder if anybody other than me is sick of people mocking the AOLese used on this site. The mockers are more annoying then the aolers themselves.

There is no use for so many posts of, "ROXOR" or anything ending in "!!!!!1111." We all get the point!

Well, I am glad I got that off my chest.

I remember when it was cool to put "euro" in front of everything.

Not to mention the clear product fad (toothpaste, soft drinks, beer, etc.).

I never get tired of seeing 1337-speak. It makes me laugh every time, even when I type it myself. :)

I am not big on swearing though... there are more creative ways to insult someone or get your point across than saying the F-word.

Well no one really answered Danimales' question. I too am curious as to what ROXOR and w00t means.

I'm curious as to the whole "Taer it down!" thing.

I think ROXOR means , that rocks. Or something that was banned from being said on that site.

w00t is some sort of word that means Awesome , or Great.

As for TAER IT DOWN!!!, it was first used on Rec-Rollercoaster , although I'm not sure which ride it was reffering too...

If you're gonna refer to rec.roller-coaster, at least spell it right!

"TAER IT DOWN!" was the rallying cry of a particularly childish troll a few years ago who thought that any ride he didn' t think was the greatest thing ever built should be taered down. Like all trolls, he couldn't spell, nor could he type. Hence "TAER". Hmmm...I can't find the original, but it dates back to before August of 1998. Chris Lucht picked up on it, and it snowballed from there.

And e-Everything is passe' these days. Now it's all about the 'Net, and so the letter is "i". Especially if you're dealing with products from Apple iComputer, inc. Maybe you remember the "me" generation? Well, not anymore. These days, it's all about "i". iMusic. iWords. iComputers. iRobot (wasn't that an Asimov book?). iPod. iMac. iMovie. iTunes. iSync. iDVD. iCrash. iLink (that one's from Sony!). iCan. iTv. iNet. iRemember. iCoaster. iCoasterBuzz. iMail. iWeb.

i gotta iTell you...it's all about iMarketing your iLife. it's all about i. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
