CoasterBuzz Podcast #151 posted

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Jeff, Mike and Pat review this week's news in the amusement industry.

  • It's results week at CoasterBuzz, and the results really suck. Disney took a hit, but they're still filling seats.
  • Six Flags is bleeding all over the place, attendance, revenue, per cap... everything. When the gate is already being given away, what's left in terms of discounting?
  • Cedar Fair doesn't have a pretty picture either, but at the very least, they've got extensions on their credit agreements, hopefully getting them to a friendlier environment.
  • Disney is having a convention for their biggest fans. Isn't funny how some of them are the most critical and unfriendly types ever? It's cool though that companies are really reaching out to their biggest fans.
  • Kalahari drowning sparks discussion about who is really responsible at the water park between lifeguards, parents and the public.
  • Knott's Haunt draws hundreds of applicants. Gonch says he'd hate working that kind of job, but some people are fanatic about it.
  • Bad guys in last year's Valleyfair beating get off with a slap on the wrist, and that angers people.
  • Enthusiasts win contest to spend two months doing Orlando attractions in exchange for documenting it. Hooray!
  • AquaQuest attraction opens at Schlitterbahn. Gonch says he's seen the MagiQuest things popping up. They did a similar thing at Epcot with a Kim Possible theme.
  • CoasterBuzz Feed is now available! Check it out. Thanks to the CoasterBuzz Club members for testing it.
  • CoasterBuzz Club is $25 per year. You can join or renew today. Enjoy CoasterBuzz with no ads.
  • We're doing a big event with Cedar Point to raise money for Give Kids The World. Coasting For Kids marathon on Gemini happens on August 26. Your support is appreciated!
  • New documentary film draw dotted line to SeaWorld and says it's partly their fault that dolphins are being slaughtered off the coast of Japan. Really?
  • LED lighting at Kennywood is cool. The environmental angle gets more interesting as economy of scale makes it good business as well as good tree hugging. Mike gets really solid mileage in his Prius.
  • New Orleans fascination with old Six Flags property still seems so silly while parts of the city are still in ruins.
  • Article highlights the rich history of kid parks around the Chicago area. Mike shares his memories.
  • BooBuzz 2009 details posted for Cedar Point!
  • The Fall Affair at Holiday World promises to be a big deal. Register today!

I just got freaked out a bit. I'm listening to the podcast and just posted in General Buzz at the same time I hear Jeff reference me posting during the podcast. I'm like, "wait, this isn't live...what the hell?" :)

(And yeah, I'm flirting with Gonch because he's hott. :) )

That, my friends, is known in certain circles as 'achieving coolness' ;)

Yes, but what are you kissing in your pic? Does not scream "cool" to me. :-)

Ladies love a guy with a Q-bot in his pocket. Sometimes you gotta whip it out and flaunt it. ;)

(just for the record - achieving coolness is a reference to the discussion about last week's podcast)

I'm warning you Carrie...find your own Gonch to stalk! ;)

So flirting with Gonch = 'achieved coolness'.

:::heads over to the uncool table, sits down, orders large meal:::

:)

Oh it would take a lot more than that to make you cool! ;)

Well your at Disney so those calories don't count. Were are we eating tonight?

For what it's worth, Universal took it on the chin in attendance, but *increased* profit on cost cutting *and* an increase in the per-cap number.

Part of that is the shift in Easter, but still...better spending? That's freaking genius.

With Toro looming it needs to be a place like Subway or When Eddie Met Salad...something like that to make sure you ride with as much U-bar space as possible!! :)

I am not at Disney till the end of September. Thinking of a Filet on a mushroom rissoto after enjoying pretzel bread dipped in cheese soup MMMMM has no calories.

BTW I have had a salad for lunch every non park day for over a year. I am down 30 lbs but have been stuck for the last 6 months.

We will see come Monday, I have been told by Kat that if I can fit on Millie and TTD with no problem I will be fine for ET. I hope she is right. So far I have fit in everything at every park we have been to. This includes kiddie coasters.

As of right now, the weather is looking pretty good for our trip. Much better then what the forecasts showed a week ago.

Oh god, that's exactly what I had at Le Celliar... mmmmm

You guys are right that it definitely takes the right kind of person to do the Haunt/Screamster jobs. Generally people are either fanatical about it almost to the point of addiction, or they can't stand it and quit after a few nights or don't make it past their first season.

Gonch is right that some of the people you deal with make you want to punch them in the face. Teenage guys showing off for their friends/girlfriends are the worst. However, the one time out of 10 that you can get one of those guys to scream, cry or wet themselves (it happens more often than you might think) and become the laughingstock of their group is the most rewarding thing in the world. One scare like that is an adrenaline rush that can't be found on any coaster I've experienced.
