Coaster Names: Imagination vs. SuperHeros...

BullGuy's avatar
I see nothing wrong with naming a coaster Batman or Superman. The GP seem to love it, and it usually results in decent themeing. It would be nice to see other superhero themes, but who is more recognizable, Batman/Superman or Green Lantern/Aquaman?

-Mark
Never Has Gravity Been So Uplifting.

Well certainly an Aquaman theme would be more appropriate for a water coaster. I like how a Riddler theme was incorporated into SFOG's Mind Bender without actually changing the name of the coaster to "The Riddler". So when does Wonder Woman get her due?

I survived a Japanese typhoon and the Togo flat ride of death!!!!!!
I'm surprised that we haven't seen an impulse coaster themed to The Flash yet.
Well, all you Superhero name haters can now breathe a sigh of relief @ Kingda Ka...:)
Well Danny, you do suck, but thats neither here nor there in this discussion...;)

As for your Origional Names list, La Viboria isn't origional. No matter what language you say it in, its still named Viper.;)

I don't mind superhero named coasters, esp. if the name fits the coaster type, I.E. Superman for Flying and Batman for inverted just kinda fits.

Plus I like saying "I rode Superman 2 times last nite". It makes me feel naughty.

On the other hand, I think a Flash name would have been better for Jokers Jinx(though I like that name as well).

What you guys aren't thinking about is Brand recognition. If you see a coaster themed to Top Gun, you think Paramount, and if you see Batman, you think Six Flags. If you see something silly like Top Thrill Dragster, you think CP, and if you see something that has to do with Africa or Europe, you think Busch. But then, SFGAdv is now trying to confuse us all... *** Edited 9/29/2004 4:52:13 AM UTC by TeknoScorpion***

THere are so many unused and defunct names though that except where the name fits their themes like Superman and stuff. Why can't parks use original or defunct names?

Names for coasters I would like to see,

Pestilence,

Rebound

Shivering Twister ;)

and even "Gasp" Banshee

Chuck, who agrees that if the coasters good, who really cares what the name is?

I think I mentioned in a thread some years ago that the Supermans and Batmans are WAY overused and I would like to see some of the *other* superheros get the credit they deserve.....Aquaman? Captain America? Wonder Woman? Catwoman? Batgirl? ;-)

I am not sure which are Warner Bros/DC Comics-owned characters and which are not.

I just wonder if people complained 60+ years ago when all the woodies were named Racer, Comet, or Psyclone/Cyclone?

I appreciate originality. For example, Shivering Timbers is probably one of the most original coaster names I have ever heard.

Too bad they can't name coasters they way they SHOULD be named....."Orgasm: The Ride", "Pain: The Ride", "Sadistic B***ard: The Revenge", "Lust: The Ultimate Escape".

Sounds like someone was TRYING to say "Kingdom Come" but had a mouth full of....whatever...;)

Personally, I like the *original* names, but I kinda (kingda?) like the ones like SoB or Hydra, where's there's an actual *story line*...:)

Yes, Kingda Ka is an outstanding name. Much more creative with more possibilities than say... Superman: Strato-Flight.

Imagine what the area around the ride would've looked like then. :P

Kingda Ka, sounds good... Reminds of Monty Python and the Castle Ahg-.... :)

I can just imagine the creative theming that could be applied to that ride. Sounds like something straight out of HHN at Universal!

Kingda Ka is a great name... it sounds like NOTHING else. The next best thing to a coaster name ending in -asm! ;)

Oh there will be much talk of Kingda KaGasms next Spring, Chuck. ;-)
