Closing vs. deleting topics

Just wondering why topics that are closed (especially those with multiple repeat or off-coaster-subject topics) aren't just deleted... or could the multiples be "pasted" in to the previous version?

It just seems that people post crap sometimes (like who wants to go to X on Friday in forums) and then it's just there forever taking up space.

Of course, you probably have better things to do, too.

I refuse to add a signature. Damn, too late.
It seems like ones that are pointless or completely unrelated to coasters get deleted, while those that are closed are repetitive or whatever. That way you can still look up stuff if you search for it and are looking for something, because usually there is a unique viewpoint or two, even if the topic has been done recently, because of the new users all the time.

It all depends on the nature of the subject matter in the post. And the mood of the moderator at the time.

If I end up closing something, but want to prove a point as to why it was closed, then it won't be deleted. On the other hand, if it smells like crap, it gets deleted.
Wait Neil, smell's like crap? Do you have some kind of software I've never heard of? ;)
